Description

H. N. MANN. Tobacco-Package Reoeptaole.
No. 208,187. Patented Sept. 17.1878'.
E A.- E
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY N. MANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PACKAGE RECEPTACLES.
Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,187, dated September 17, 1878 application filed March 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. MANN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Tobacco- Packages; and I do hereby .declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved canister or air-tight receptacle for tobacco -packages, the object being to provide an efficient means for preserving the moist condition of the tobacco contained in said package while being retailed; and it consists of a metallic case having a hinged door or lid, and provided with an inner air-tight casing for said door or lid to close upon, to render the receptacle air-tight, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my complete invention, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference occurring on the several guresindicate like parts.
A denotes the metallic case, preferably constructed of tin or other suitable sheet metal, and having the hinged door or lid B, provided with a locking-knob, C. A short distance be'- low the opening in said case, about the width of the door B, and entirely around the same, is arranged a projecting iiange, D, which secures and holds in place a continuous strip, E, of felting, rubber, or other elastic material, bent at right angles, as shown in Fig. 2. The lid or door B is also provided with an inner projecting flange or frame, F, which, when the door is closed, abuts against the inner flange, D, and elastic strip E, thereby forming a close joint and rendering the receptacle air-tight. The door is locked and held to its place against the elastic strip bymeans of the cam on the spindle of the knob C engaging with the inner iiange D, as shown in Fig. 2.
The construction of my invention being as already described, it will be observed that in retailing plug-tobacco from the original package the dealer is not allowed, under the'reve nue laws, to remove the contents from said package to any other receptacle, and hence the tobacco offered for sale is constantly exposed to the action of the atmosphere, and thereby loses its moisture, becomes dry, and crumbles away, or else molds, so as to render it worthless before the contents of the package can be sold.
In the operation of my invention, the cover of the original ypackage is taken oft', and the said package placed, with its open end outward, into the air-tight receptacle A, which can have a glass'panel in its front lid or door to exhibit its contents, and thus render the tobacco contained therein easy of access, while at the same time the moist properties of the tobacco are fully preserved until the wh ole contents a-re retailed.
The advantages ,of my invention will be readily apparent without a more minute description, inasmuch as it combines in its construction and operation a high degree of utility andeconomy with a ready adaptation to the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the
herein-described tin receptacle A for tobacco packages, provided with elastic strips E, bent at right angles and held in place by the pro jecting flanges D, secured to the sides and near the mouth of said receptacle, to enable the door B, which is provided with lockingknob C, to close tightly against the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY N. MANN.
