To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD A. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cigar boxes and the like and has for its principal object the provision of a new and improved box of economical construction for the packaging of cigars.

Prior to my invention it has been enerally the custom to pack cigars in cedar oxes of relative shallow rectangular shape. These boxes have required in their construction the use of considerable cedar of clean, fine quality, which, now, because of its increasing scarcity, is becoming expensive.

' My invention contemplates the construction of boxes of this character of tin provided with a thin lining or veneer of cedar or other suitable wood.

I am aware that prior to my invention at tempt has been made to market cigars and other forms of tobacco in containers, but these attempts have been unsuccessful, particularly in the case of cigars, by reason of the drying of the tobacco even in the best constructed package of this character. Cigars once having become dry are permanently injured, as the subsequent application of moisture with a humidor does not regain for the cigars their original flavor. The use of cedar for cigar boxes is peculiarly beneficial because of the oils of the wood which are 'ven out slowly and substantially continuousl thereby preventing the drying of cigars and in addition giving to them a slightly added desirable flavor.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a cigar box which may be constructed much cheaper than has heretofore been possible without undesirable effects upon the cigars.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character which will ermit an exceedingly slight amount of venti ation, thereby effecting a more perfect application to the cigars of the oils of the cedar wood.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description of Fig. 1 with the cover closed; and

F or the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied-in a clgar box of the ordinary size and shape of those usually employed. This box consists, in the present instance, of a body A and a cover B hinged along a longer edge at C to the body A.

The body is comprised, in the present instance. of sheet metal walls forming a receptacle in which is provided a lining of cedar in thin sheet form. The metal body receptacle consists of a bottom wall 5, a front wall 6, a rear wall 7 and end walls 9, all joined together at adjacent edges in any suitable fashion as by the interlocking edges 10. The cedar lining in the present instance consists of a bottom sheet or portion 11, end sheets or portions 12 and front and back portions 13. The front, back and end portions in the present instance rest against the inner faces of the front, back and end walls with the lower edge upon the bottom wall '5 of the receptacle, with their upper edges embraced by inwardly and downwardly turned flanges 14. The bottom portion 11 of the lining rests merely within the end, front and back portions of the lining upon the upper face of the bottom wall 5 of the receptacle against which it is held by the weight of the cigars. In order that a slight amount of ventilation may be permitted when the box is packed with cigars, I provide apertures 15 in the bottom wall 5 of the receptacle and apertures 16 in the bottom portion 11 of the lining, these apertures being located out of alinement and preferably near opposite ends of the box. When so arranged they permit a slight amount of air to pass in and out of the package between the lining and the bottom wall, this amount, however, being so slight and at such slow rate that the oils of the cedar are given ample time to per meate the cigars, This arrangement of the apertures 15 and 16 at the same time prevents the escape of appreciable moisture from the box. The sheets ofcedar employed are very thin, and the Wood required to form a cigar box of the ordinary Wooden type Will furnish suflicient cedar for several boxes embodying my invention, thereby greatly reducing the cost of the package Without loss of any of the desirable features of the old Wooden box.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages Will be understood fromuthe foregoing description, and it Will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.

I claim:

A cigar box, comprising a metal receptacle provided With a lining of thin cedar Wood, said metal receptacle having ventilating openings closed by the cedar lining, said cedar lining having spaced openings at a distance from the ventilating openings of the receptacle, whereby circulation of air is limited and incoming air is caused to pass for a distance in contact With the surface of the cedar lining between the same and the metal receptacle and take up the cedar oils and aid in impartingthe same gradually to thecigars.
