GORDON WAXEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-BOX.
Application filed June 16, 1916.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, GORDON VAxnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes, of'
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in cigar boxes, and the objects contemplated are the provision of a container of this class which will preserve cigars in a moist condition without the coperation of special humidifiers; and to provide a container which may be manufactured and sold at a price suiiiciently low to permit its general use.
To the accomplishment of the recited objects and others subordinate thereto, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that construction and arrangement hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the container.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along lines 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the end and side panels removed, and
Fig. L is a fragmentary sectional view taken along lines 1--1 of Fig. 1.
Broadly, my invention comprises affbox having a closure, the bottom of the box and the inside of the closure being formed with inserts which are impervious with respect to air and moisture. The bottom insert is retained by the end and side panels, while the top insert is sustained by cleats extending transversely of the closure.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates a box provided with a lid or closure 11. On the inside 0f the bottom 12 of the box is superposed a plate 13 of impervious material, such as glass. This insert is maintained in proper relation to the body of the box by the individually removable end and side panels, 14 and 15, respectively, which are pervious as to moisture, formed preferably of unseasoned cedar, and disposed contiguous rela- Speccaton of Letters Patent.

tively to the inner walls of the box. The adjacent edges of the panels are beveled, as at 16, and the upper edges rounded off so that they will fit to a nicety and present a finished appearance. A companion impervious plate 17 is arranged inside of the lid 11, and fastened thereto by means of transverse cleats 18. Then the lid is closed, as exhibited in Fig. 4, the confronting edges of the panels and the cleats engage each other and in this respect serve to form a sealed joint.
The function of the impervious plates or linings is to occlude the major area of the sensible pores of the box and lid, and thereby prevent the absorption by these pores of the moisture from the cigars, or the like, which it is desired to keep in a state of preservation. At the same time, by reason of the comparatively thick walls of the box and lid, as well as the seal therebetween, the panels of cedar are maintained normally charged with a certain amount of moisture, and but little of the moisture is absorbed from the cigars while sufficient aromatic qualities of the cedar are absorbed to properly blend the cigars. If upon the other hand, the cigars are dry when initially placed in the container, the absorption strength of the tobacco will be in excess of the absorption strength of the cedar, and thereby take up moisture and aroma from the cedar. As will be readily appreciated, this phenomenon makes it possible to preserve already moistened cigars in a moist condition and to meisten dry cigars without the employment of special humidor devices and the constant attention which such devices require.
It should be understood that in its broader aspects my invention comprehends the employment not only of the means described, but of equivalent means for performing the recited functions. l/Vhile the arrangement shown is thought to be preferable, it is desired to reserve the right to effect such changes and modifications as may come fairly within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A receptacle for cigars and the like, comprising an outer box-like casing having a hinged lid, a vitreous lining in said lid and boX bottom, and a lining of cedar panels sides arranged to project above the boX sides for the ends and sides arranged to project into the lid.
