Description
May 3 v Q J. G. 'SCHNE-TZLER 2,081,069
WINDOW FASTENER Filed April 28, 1936 ATTORNEY Patented May 18, 1937 NTED STATES PATENT cert-es 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a window fastener and more especially to a. combined sash holder and release device.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof allows the mounting of the same upon the sash of the window so that both sashes within the window frame can be latched that neither can be raised or lowered when so fastened.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel in form so that both sashes within the window frame can be held tight against movement and also will obviate rattling of the sashes due to wind currents or building vibration.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a sash of this character, which is simple in construction, tho-roughly reliable and efficient in its operation, readily and easily applied to and removed from a window sash, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through a window showing the device in top plan applied thereto. 7
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 46 of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a window frame or casement, B a portion of the lower sash and C a portion of the upper sash, these being conventional and are slidable in the frame A as usual.
Adapted to be separably attached to the top meeting rail of the lower sash B is the device constituting the present invention and comprising a base plate Ill formed at opposite side edges with clamping flanges H and I2, respectively, the latter flange being slightly inclined in conformity with the inclined face of the meeting rail of the lower sash B while adjustably fitted in the flange II is a binding screw I3 so that the base plate I!) can be clamped upon the said meeting rail of the lower sash B as is clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawing.
Slidable upon the base plate I!) is a throw bolt i4 operating in a guide l formed on said base plate It. This bolt has bent therefrom a jaw IS in which is fastened a holding head ll adapted for engagement with the vertical side rail of the upper sash C when the bolt I4 is thrown in one direction for the latching of said upper sash.
On the guide [5 is a pivot I8 swingingly mounting a movable jaw 19 carrying a holding head 20. This jaw 19 has pivoted thereto a throw link 2|, it being also pivoted as at 22 to an operating lever 23, the pivot connecting the link 2| with the jaw 19 being indicated at 24. The lever 23 is supported for rocking movement upon a pivot stud 25 carried by the base plate it. The lever 23 at the handle end thereof is preferably upturned for convenience in manipulation thereof and such lever at the end 26 engages in a fulcrum notch 21 provided in the bolt l4. Thus when the lever 23 is operated both jaws will be shifted simultaneously, one being adapted to engage the window frame and the other the sash C as is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. In this manner both sashes B and C will be latched in the window frame A against sliding movements.
Pivoted upon the handle end of the lever 23 as at 28 is a latching trigger 29 selectively engageable in any one of a series of slots 3!! provided in a keeper rack 3| bent upwardly from the base plate l0 and in this manner the lever 23 is locked in its thrown position or in a posi-' tion for releasing the jaws from engagement with the window frame and the said sash.
Upon the pivot stud 25 is a tensioning washer 32 coacting with the lever 23 to hold the said lever in proper working relation with respect to the bolt M.
It is preferable to have the heads I! and. 20 made from material that will not mar or mark the finish to the frame and the sash of the window.
The trigger 29 is manually operated for latching and unlatching of the lever 23.
The lever 23 and the trigger 29 are readily accessible above the meetingv rail of the lower sash B- as will be apparent from Figures 1 and 4 of the drawing.
What is claimed, is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a base plate, means for securing the base plate to a window sash, at its meeting rail with another window sash, a guide at one end of the base plate, a throw bolt adapted to have sliding movement on the base plate and in the guide and having a fulcrum notch therein, a jaw fixed to said bolt, a holding head carried by said jaw, a movable jaw pivoted to said guide, a holding head carried by said movable jaw, an operating lever pivoted to the base plate and received by the fulcrum notch in the throw bolt,
a throw link pivoted to said lever and movable jaw, and means for latching the lever in adjusted position.
2. A device of the character described comprising a base plate, means for securing the base plate to a window sash at its meeting rail with another window sash, a throw bolt adapted to have sliding movement on the base plate into and out'of engagement with the other sash and having a fulcrum notch therein, a movable jaw pivoted to the base plate and adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the Window frame, an operating lever pivoted to said base plate and received by said fulcrum notch in the throw bolt, and a throw link pivoted to said lever 3 and movable jaw.
