One embodiment of the inventio-n is illustrated in Figure 1, wherein I0 indicates a display unit made of a stili paper sheet or board. Any desired configuration may be given to the sheet depending upon the character of the advertising for which it is designed. 'I'he conguration illustrated in Figure 1 is adapted, for example, 40 for use as a price tag to be aflixed to any desired article. One margin of the display unit is provided with a score line I2 spaced away from the'edge to form a iiange II when the unit is bent on the score line as shown in Figure 3. The score line I2 terminates in a short slit I3 extending to the upper edge of the display unit. A short slit I4 is spaced inwardly from slit I3 at a distance approximately equal to the width of ange portion II. A rscore line I6 is provided at a suitable distance below the upper edge so as to form tabs I 'I and I8. The flange portion II and tab I'I are coated on one face thereof with a pressure sensitive adhesive composition indicated by numeral 9. I prefer to use a hot melt pressure sensitive composition as disclosed in copending, application Serial No. 98,978. This composition consists essentially of acohesive agent, an adhesive agent and a thermoplastic solvent therefor. The following composition is suitable for use on display units made of card- 5 board.

The composition is preferably heated to about 15 -200 F. and is applied to the base sheet by means of a roll or doctor blade heated to about 180'-200 F. so as to spread a Athin layer of the composition of suitable thickness on the base sheet. on a heated roll coacting with the spreader roll and spaced away suflciently to permit the ldesired thicknessof coating' to be applied. After the adhesive coating is spread it is congealed by passing the web over a chilled roll and a cover strip is applied lightly thereto.4 This method and apparatus for carrying same out is disclosed in copending application Serial No. 98,978.
In order to protect the adhesive coating 9 ap- 30 plied on flange portion II andtab I1 prior to the use of the unit for attaching to any desired supporting surface, peelablel cover strip I5 is applied thereto. Such cover strip may be made of glassine, holland cloth, and the like which will 35 adhere to the adhesive coating but will readily peel therefrom. i
In order to use the display imit illustrated in Figure 1, it is rst necessary to assemble it in proper condition for aflixing to the supporting 4o surface. In setting up the display unit, the cover strip I5 is ilrst peeled from the margin or Ilange II. The. ilange is then folded on score line I2 so as to be in a plane intersecting the plane of the display body I0 at about 90. Tab 45 I1 is then folded over as shown in Figure 3, at a right angle to flange II. Tab I8 is then folded over tab I'I and applied thereto by pressure of the ilngers. Inasmuch as tab I'I is coated with 50 pressure sensitive adhesive it will retain thetab I8 in the position shown in Figure 4.
The display unit is now ready to be afiixed to any suitable supporting surface by simply pressing with the thumb the adhesive coated face 9 55 The base sheet is preferably supported 20 of flange II against the supporting surface A as shown in Figures 5 and 7.
The display unit will remain firmly in place after being so attached, butv it can be readily removed from the supporting surface by simply peeling it off Without fouling or marring the supporting surface in any way.
'I'he display unitmay be made of any suitable sheet material such as cardboard, sheet metal, veneer, stiifened cloth, sheets made of synthetic materials such as celluloid, resins, and the like. It is obvious that any sheet material which mai1 be printed or impressed with any indicia or to which any advertising matter may be aillxed or made integral therewith is contemplated within the scope of this invention. Any suitable shape, form or contour may be given to the display unit depending upon the -purpose for which it is to be used.
An important advantage of the display unit made in accordance with the foregoing description is that both sides of the display .unit are unobstructed and are visible after being attached to any supporting surface. Any advertising matter carried on both sides of the display-unit is thus always visible to the eye as the body of the unit is spaced away from the supporting surface. The utilization of both faces of the unitand its spaced condition when attached thus gives the unit great attraction value.
Figure 8 illustrates a modification ofthe display unit made in accordance with this invention. The unit consists of a body portion of stiff cardboard printed with any suitable advertising matter. One margin of the unit is scored and slit in a manner similar to that shown in Figure 1 to provide a flange portion 2| and tab portions 22 and 23. Instead of applying the pressure sensitive adhesivedirectly to the ange 2| an adhesive strip is assembled separately and applied to the unit after it has been printed or otherwise ornamented for advertising purposes. This preformed adhesive strip consists of a base of paper tape or the like 21, coated on one face with a gum or water soluble glue' 28. The other face of the tape is coated with any suitable pressure sensitive adhesive 26 which is protected by a peelable cover strip 25, such as holland cloth or glassine. This unit is shown in partially separated condition in Figure 8. The adhesive strip so assembled is applied to the flange 2l and tab 22 by moistening the gummed surface'28 and applying same to the unit as shown in Figure 8. The units are then distributed to the purchasers in this condition.
When the unit as shown in Figure 8 is to be attached to any desired supporting surface, the cover strip 25 is peeled olf thereby exposing th'e pressure sensitive adhesive coating 26. The flange 2l is then bent at right angles to the body 20 of the unit and tab 22 folded over. Tab 23 is then pressed over tab 22 which will be retained in position by the adhesive. The unit is then attached to any supporting surface by merely applying the adhesive layer 26 to the supporting surface and pressing it with the ngers.
- Figure 9 illustrates a display unit constructed similarly to the unit shown in Figure 1 except that the body portion is formed and printed to similate a carton of cigarettes for display purposes. Itl is obvious that the ange construction herein disclosed may be utilized for displaying a great variety of objects made of paper, cardboard, metal foil, synthetically produced sheets and the like. The flange construction may be utilized, for example, to display paper cartons, cans, and similar light objects, by attaching them to any desired supporting surface.
It is obvious that many variations and changes may be made in the specific embodiment of the inventionherein disclosed, and it is to be understood that all suchvariations are intended to be included in the appended claims as is broadly consistent with' the prior art.
I claim:
1. A display unitcomprising a body portion, a flange portion coated with pressure sensitive adhesive for attaching the display unit to a supporting surface, said flange portion being provided with a tab portion coated with pressure sensitive adhesive, a second tab portion on the body portion of the display unit adapted 'to be folded over and adhered to said first tab for maintaining said flange at an angle to said body portion.
2. A display unit comprising a body portion, one margin of said body portion being provided with a scoreline to form a flange portion, a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive on said ange portion for ailixing the display unit to a supporting surface, one end of said flange being provided with a. tab` portion disconnected from the body portion by a slit, a second slit in the body portion spaced from said first slit to provide a second tab portion, the first tab being coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and adapted to retain the second tab folded thereover for retaining said flange at an angle to the body portion of the display unit.
3. A display unit comprising a body portion made of cardboard, one margin of said body portion being provided with a score line to form a flange portion, a coating of pressure sensitive adhesive on said ange portion for ailixing the display unit to a supporting surface, a peelable cover strip on said adhesive coating, one end of said flange being provided with a tab portion disconnected from the body portion by a slit, a second slit in the body portion spaced from said flrst slit to provide a second tab portion, the first tab being coated with pressure sensitive adhesive and adapted rto retain the second tab folded thereover for retaining said flange at an angle to the body portion of the display unit.
