METHOD OF MAKING DOUBLE FACED ADHESIVE CUT-OUTS Filed Nov. 8, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR Lawrence Elan)? 52 02210 Cape ATTORNEY Unite States The present invention relates to a dispensing system which may be utilized in connection with double faced adhesive, but which also has a broader application to the dispensation of labels, cut-outs, and blanks.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a convenient system for enabling ready dispensing of double faced adhesive cut-outs, which may be readily employed for the attachment of emblems, tags, inserts and other devices.
In any connection where it is desirable to apply a tag, cut-out, label, emblem, or the like, the device must be provided with an adhesive surface, then the device with the adhesive surface is to be applied to a suitable mount or structure.
These adhesive surfaces or faces cause considerable difficulty in application and usually three or four manual operations are necessary before the adhesive face may be properly applied to the emblem, label or cut-out, then additional operations are necessary before such emblem, label or cut-out is applied to the final structure.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide a relatively simple system to accomplish this end result without a multiplicity of handling operations and without the need of intervening mounting steps for mounting and carrying adhesive material.
A still further object is to provide a high speed, low labor and economical adhesive cut-out dispensing and application system, which maybe widely utilized for application of trademarks, product identification, guarantees, price labels, sales stickers, special feature labels, and special promotion stickers, point of sale stickers, product information, warning labels, special instructions, address changes, package labels, content labels, color coating maintenance instructions and advertising tie-in labels, all with a minimum of labor and with easy and ready operation from a carrier sheet or tape, regardless of its thickness or body and without intermediate storage or separation operations.
Another object is to provide a double adhesive sticker dispensing system in which the pressure sensitive coated cut-uts may be readily detached from the carrier incidental to usage or consumption thereof without intermediate removal and carrier operations and with only one operator being required to remove the cut-outs from the tape or strip and to apply such label immediately thereafter to the article being marked to the emblem being prepared for application, or for any other purpose.
It is among the further objects of the present invention to provide a novel emblem application system in which any type or material of double adhesive backing or carrier tape or strip may be utilized without regard to the stiffness or body thereof, and in which the cut-out may be made of any suitable pliable or stiff paper or plastic material, either plain or printed, and cut or die-cut before or after application to the carrier tape.
Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.
In accomplishing the above objects, it has been found atent h ice most satisfactory according to one embodiment of the present invention to provide a basic longitudinally scored or divided carrier tape or strip to which one side of a pressure sensitive adhesive cut-out is applied. The other side of the pressure sensitive adhesive cut-out may be suitably masked or covered with readily removable protective elements so that it is possible to remove the cut out in one operation from the carrier tape, and then after application to the emblem or other device to remove the protective elements.
For example in one form of the invention small circular or polygonal metal discs, or plates, or plastic or stiff paper discs, are provided to which a double faced adhesive is to be applied.
On a separate carrier strip either in crepe paper or some other treated material, there are provided a series of cut-outs with one adhesive face carried on the carrier strip and readily strippable therefrom, and the other adhesive face being provided and protected by suitable removable elements.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to Which fall Within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
FIG. 1 is a side perspective view of a carrier strip which embodies the invention of the present application showing the cut-outs in position on the carrier strip, and the carrier strip partly removed along its scored or divide line.
FIG. 2 is a top plane view of the cut-out of FIG. 1 upon the carrier strip.
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 33 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a rear perspective view of the cut-out after removal from the carrier tape. j
FIG. 5 is a front perspective view of the device of FIG. 4 after application to an emblem or initial.
FIG. 6 is a front perspective view of an emblem or initial of FIG. 5 after application to mounting structure.
FIG. 7 is a front elevational vitew of an alternative carrier tape arrangement in which the tape double faced adhesive and protective elements may be applied in a continuous operation.
FIG. 8 is a transverse sectional view similar to FIG. 3 of an alternative form of cut out or label with the removable tabs both extending in the same direction.
FIG. 9 is a diagrammatic top perspective view illustrating how the entire cut out or label may be assembled in one continuous operation without manual intervention.
Referring to FIGS. 1 to 6, there is shown the roll of the carrier material A, which is formed of a carrier tape B of crepe paper or cloth so treated as to be readily strippable from a rubber base pressure sensitive adhesive.
As shown in FIG. 1, the carrier strip B is provided with a longitudinal score or divide line C, which will enable one side D of the strip B to be first stripped from the cut-outs E leaving a portion F exposed where it may be readily grasped by the fingers and removed from the balance G of the carrier strip.
To clarify this operation the lower portion G of the slit carrier strip B may be held mechanically or manually in position while the upper portion'D may be pulled away from the cut outs B. When this is done, the cut outs B will be left adhesively connected to the lower half strip G so that the projecting portion F may be clasped and then the entire cut out E may be removed from the lower half strip G.
As shown best in FIGS. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the carrier strip receives the double portion sensitive adhesive cutout element H, one face I is attached to the tape B and will be subsequently mounted upon the emblem or initial K. The other adhesive face L is protected temporarily by the removable folded element M, which will stay with the cut-out E when it is removed from the strip B.
These elements M are subsequently stripped after the adhesive face I or initial K, then the adhesive face L is pressed against the mounting structure or ornament carrier N.
By this system it is apparent that a large number of cut outs E of proper size and shape and outline to match the emblem K are mounted on the carrier strip B and formed in the roll A, then as the roll is utilized in FIG. 1, one of the sides D of the carrier strip B is stripped away leaving a portion of the cut-out E projecting at F.
The fingers may readily grasp the projecting portion F on the residual carrier strip G, so that the element of FIG. 4 is obtained with the protective strips M in position.
This removed cut-out may then be applied to the emblem K as shown in FIG. 5, and upon removal of the folded protective elements M, the emblem K is readily mounted upon a receiver or structure N.
All this is done without an excessive number of intermediate operations.
In the alternative form of the invention, shown in FIG. 7, the backing strip 0, the double faced adhesive Q, and the two folded protective elements P may be assembled together as continuous strips of material.
Then by a cutting-out operation, the outlines of the cut-outs may be formed after the assembling has been made.
The score line S may also be provided before or after the assembling operation.
In the system of FIG. 7 it will be noted that junction line 10 between the elements P is longitudinally of the tape 0.
In the arrangement of FIGS. 1 to 6, it will be noted that the junction line 11 of FIG. 2 is transverse to the direction of the tape B.
This parallel positioning of the junction line 10 enables a better assembly by continuous automatic machinery.
The partial stripping as shown in FIG. 1 may be applied to the embodiment of FIG. 7.
By the method thus described, it is possible to remove cut outs E and R most readily and with a minimum of manual operation and without intermediate stripping and storing operations from a carrier tape B or O by merely preliminary perforating or pre-scoring the carrier strip, as indicated at C and S.
This will save considerable labor and will enable rapid dispensation of a large number of pressure sensitive cut outs when required without previous stripping.
Referring to FIG. 8 there is shown in transverse section similar to FIG. 3 an alternative form of cut out or double faced label.
In FIG. 8 similarly functioning parts are indicated by the same numerals and letters primed.
As shown in FIG. 8 the carrier strip B carries double faced adhesive H, one side of which adheres but is readily strippable from the carrier strip B, and the other side of which adheres to and is readily strippable from the removable folded cover elements M.
It will be noted that the finger grip portions 50 and 51 forming part of the removable folded strip M both extend in one direction and are superimposed so that they may be readily pulled off together if desired.
They also may be readily separately grasped, as they overlap as indicated at 52.
The junction line .11 which is covered by the flap 51 does not require that the two folded edges touch, as at 11 in FIG. 3, since the adhesive will be protected by the overlying strip 51 as shown in FIG. 8.
The junction line 11 may be transverse or longitudinal of the major axis of the carrier tape B.
In FIG. 9 there is shown a procedure for assembling the combination of FIG. 7. The carrier strip is supplied from the roll suitably supported in or about the machine, and it is fed in the direction 101 and the slit is indicated at 102. This is done by means of the slitting or scoring edge 104 which may consist of a roller.
The double faced adhesive is supplied from the supply roller 105 and it comes with an intervening separator strip 106 to prevent the opposite sides from adhering to one another. The double faced adhesive strip 107, after separation from the separator strip 106, will be fed in the direction 108.
The tabbing strips 109 and 110 will be fed from the supply rolls 111 and 112 and would be folded in half by the folders 113 and 113.
From the outlet edges 114- and 115 of the folders 113' and 113 the folded strips will pass outwardly as indicated at 116 and 117. The folding is accomplished so that the lower edge 118 in each instance will project beyond the upper edge 119 and will project to the edge 120 of the confined strips and pass between the upper pressure roller 121 and the lower pressure roller 122.
Immediately after this assembly the arrangement will pass under the die cutter 123 which will slit along the edge lines 124 and along the forward and rearward lines 125 and 126, permitting the residual marginal portion to be stripped off, leaving the tape as indicated in FIG. 7 with the labels all in proper position.
A wide variety of difi'erent types of lines or carrier strips B and 0 may be utilized, whether of cloth, plastic, crepe, or the like.
While there has been herein described a preferred form of the invention, it should be understood that the same may be altered in details and in relative arrangement of parts within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, what is claimed is:
1. A process of making a coiled double faced adhesive cut out label dispensing strip which comprises feeding together in parallelism to an assembly position a base carrier strip, a double faced adhesive strip of the same width and two tabbing strips which are folded over so that the folds will meet at the longitudinal center line of the dispensing strip with the lower portions of the tabbing strips contacting the adhesive face of the adhesive strip and the upper portions will be folded outwardly, centrally slitting the base strip before the assembly position and then die cutting the assembled adhesive strip and folded tabbing strips to form said label, the meeting folds of the tabbing strip extending along the longitudinal central axis of the carrier strip and the outer edges of the upper portions terminating inside of the edge of the carrier strip and inside of the outer edge of the label.
2. A method of making a double adhesive label having a removable longitudinally centrally split carrier bottom strip, a rubber base pressure sensitive double adhesive faced central element and cover strips extending over the top face of the central element having meeting folded edges extending in alignment with center of the carrier strip, the steps of feeding said carrier, central element and folded cover strips simultaneously to a point of assembly, slitting the carrier strip and folding the cover strips so that their upper folded portions will have their edges inside of the edges of the strip and the edges of the label while being fed to the point of assembly and then cutting away the portions of the central element and folded cover strips after the assembly has been completed.
3. A method of making a double adhesive label having a centrally slit base, a double adhesive faced pressure sensitive adhesive center and two folded removable tab members contacting along the center of the label at their folded edges having upper free removable tabs terminating short of the edges of the label and the base and lower contact portions completely covering the pressure sensitive adhesive center, which comprises feeding a base strip, a double face coated adhesive center strip and two cover strips together to a place of assembly, folding the cover strips so that their folded edges will meet at the central axis of the assembly and their lower portions will extend to the outer edges of the assembly and their upper portions will be free and will terminate substantially short of the edges of the base strip and of the side edges of the label and die cutting the center and folded strips to form the die cut labels on the base strip, said die cut labels extending across the base strip so that its side edges are inside of the side edges of the base strip and the upper portions of the cover strips will terminate inside of the side edges of the label.
