UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
IGNAO PICK, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN VICTORINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,034, dated September 17, 1878; application filed June 10, 1878; patented in England, September 28, 1877.
of the skirt, so that it may be conveniently carried on the person in such manner as to permit the hands of the wearer being readily and quickly withdrawn therefrom at any moment without fear of losing it by having to place it aside, or to hold it while the hands are required for other purposes, as is the case with the muffs now in use.
This improved combined article forms at the same time a new and elegant article of ladies dress.
This combined article consists of a collar or tippet, bands dependent from the front of the same, an extension of the bands below the waist in one piece, and a muff located at the place where the mufi is usually worn.
In one arrangement the article is adjusted or fitted on by passing it over the head, and for this purpose I cut the front thereof in two parts for a portion of its length, so as to permit a sufficient opening for the passage of the head 5 and when the article is on the wearer these two parts are connected together by means of hooks and eyes, buttons, or other suitable fastening contrivances.
I contemplate a modification or alternative arrangement of the bands, which consists in making that part in one piece, the tippet being divided at some other part, so as to be capable of being passed around the neck instead of over the head, as in the other case.
This combined article may depend as low in front of the dress as desired, and, in addition to forming a warm covering for the neck and a muff for the hands, it can supply the place of ornamental trimming to jackets or other outdoor costumes.
I proceed, with reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, to describe a combined muff and tippet or victorine made according to my invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a back view, and Fig. 3 a side View, of the arrangement first herein described.
A is a tippet or covering for the neck and adjacent parts of the back and shoulders. A A are bands or extensions of the tippet A over the breast of the wearer, and made continuous therewith. A is an extension of the bands A A made in one piece and continuous with those bands; and Bis a muff, secured at or near the junction of the parts A A and A The bands A A are provided with hooks and eyes or other suitable means of attachment, and are made in two parts for convenience in putting on and off.
Now, in accordance with my invention, l sew or otherwise attach to the back of the tippet or, victorine A layers or pieces of silk, satin, velvet, or other suitable fabric, and the part or place where the muff is to be I stuff witheider-down, hair, wadding, or other like material, so that it forms a cushion or padding, which then constitutes the muff B. If desired, this padding may be quilted.
A second padding or cushion, 13*, similar to that forming the inside back of the muff, is placed opposite thereto, on the under side of the tippet or victorine, and forms the inside front of the muff. The space between these paddings or cushions forms a comfortable and warm receptacle for the hands of the wearer, which are introduced at the sides.
- O is apocket attached to the back of the mud, and useful for holding a purse, handkerchief, or other like article. This combined article is preferably made of furs or other suitable or warm materials, and may be padded, lined, and quilted on its upper part, so as to form a chest-protector.
I am aware that previous to my invention articles of wear have been made consisting of a tippet or collar, bands continuous therewith and pendent therefrom, and a muff attached to the ends of such bands; also, that an article of asimilar kind, but having in addition two short pendants or extensions of the bands extending below the muff or pocket provided in each band, has been made prior to my inven- 1 Witness my hand this 28th day of May, tio-n and I therefore disclaim the same. 1878. Having thus described my invention, what w I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- IGNAQ PICK ters Patent, is- Witnesses:
