Claims.
The present invention pertains to bobbin changing looms, and has more particular reference to the shuttle box at the replenishing side of such looms.
5 In looms of the type mentioned, the shuttle box at the replenishing side of the loom commonly includes a back box plate having a top guard plate, and a front box plate which has been of rigid construction with both ends fixed to the lay. The
usual bobbin changing mechanism transfers a bobbin down into the shuttle box through the top thereof, and the incoming filling end is removed from the shuttle box over the top of the front box plate.
I propose to provide in a shuttle box for the replenishing side of a bobbin changing loom, a back box plate and top plate as aforesaid, a front box plate the inner end of which is yieldable or movable forwardly and rearwardly, and a rigid supporting member extending from the top guard plate forwardly and downwardly in front of the movable end of the front box plate, the box plate and supporting member to be so constructed and arranged that the box plate will serve as a shuttle check but will be firmly supported by the member when the shuttle is boxed and will be moved rear- 1 wardly away from the member to permit a removal of the incoming filling end when the shuttle is absent from the box.
In the preferred embodiment, the front box plate is resilient, it being formed of spring steel,
7 and is fixed to the lay at its outer end only. The inner end of this box plate is biased rearwardly into the path of an incoming shuttle but is moved forwardly by such shuttle. The usual binder is positioned in the back box plate, but the resilient front box plate provides the principal shuttle checking action and is very efiicient for this purpose. At the same time, the supporting member limits forward movement of the front box plate and thus firmly holds the shuttle in proper position for operation of the bobbin changing mechamsm.
The said preferred embodiment is illustrated on the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a part of a loom having the preferred form of shuttle box;
I Fig. 2 is a plan view of a part of the mechanism of Fig. 1, showing the shuttle in the box;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the shuttle leaving the box after transfer; and
Fig. 4 is a view in cross-section taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
The loom shown on the drawings is of conventional construction, except for the shuttle box,
and is accordingly but fragmentarily illustrated. Of the conventional mechanism, the shuttle i is picked along the lay 2 by picker sticks, as 3, the shuttle passing through the shed of warp threads W to lay picks of filling thread which are beaten into the fell F of the cloth C by a reed 4 carried by the lay. A supply of reserve bobbins is carried in a hopper 5 and are transferred to the shuttle by bobbin changing mechanism which may include the transferrer 6, all as is well known in the 10 art. A cutting mechanism is fragmentarily illustrated at 1, this mechanism serving to out the outgoing filling end adjacent the shuttle eye and withdraw it from the shuttle box. This cutting mechanism is not of the present invention, it 15 being disclosed and claimed in patent to Burdett, No. 1,883,532, granted Oct. 18, 1932.
The shuttle box shown on the drawings comprises a floor 8, which may be the usual metal lay end, a back box plate 9 having a shuttle guiding 20 surface In and a top guard plate H, a binder I2,
a front box plate I3 of novel construction, and a supporting member to be described in detail. The particular back box plate shown is old, per se, it being fastened at its outer end to the lay by the 25 bolt l 4 on which the binder is pivoted and fastened at its inner end to the sword I5, in the usual 'manner. The top plate I I is integral with the part of the back box plate having the shuttle guiding surface In. This top plate covers the shuttlebox 30 only at the inner or mouth end thereof so as to leave an opening in the top of the box through which a new bobbin is transferred to the shuttle.
In prior constructions of bobbin changing looms, the binder was the only shuttle checking device 35 provided in the shuttle box and such additional checking action as was required was provided by means, such as check strap l6, which checks the picker stick. This checking action of the binder has proven to be inadequate in high speed looms, 40 to the extent that the inability of the binder to properly check the shuttle has definitely limited the speed at which prior looms may be run. The present invention provides a movable front box plate which is so constructed as to constitute a 45 greatly improved shuttle check which will permit operation of the loom at higher speeds than have been considered practicable heretofore.
The front box plate l3 shown on the drawings consists of a bracket l1 and a plate l8 which may 50 be faced with leather. The bracket I1 is in the form of an angle which is fixed to the lay adjacent the end thereof. The inner end of the box plate is biased rearwardly but movable forwardly by an incoming shuttle. To this end, the particular 55 plate I8 is formed from spring steel, the outer end of the plate is fixed as by being bolted to the bracket I1 by bolts l9, l9, and the remainder of the plate is free and biased rearwardly as shown by Fig. 3. When the shuttle is absent from the shuttle box, the inner end of the plate 88 springs rearwardly to a position rearwardly of the line of the frontwall of, the shuttle and is thus in the path of the incoming shuttle. The construction may be such that the plate l8 supplements: the checking action of the binder, or that the plate provides all of the checking action that is required, as desired.
It will be noted that the top edge of the front box plate is spaced from theifront edge of top plate H, to permit removal of an incoming fillin end f from the shuttle box over the top of the front box plate. The plate I8 is also bowed upwardlytoprovide an opening 20 through which the cutting mechanism I enters the shuttle box to cut and clamp an outgoing filling end I. The lower edge of the plate I8 is spaced above the fioor of the shuttle box to permit withdrawal of the outgoing end 1" from the shuttle box beneath the box plate. This latter feature is not of the present invention, it being disclosed and claimed in patent to Stafford, No. 1,568,481, granted Jan.
The checking action of the shuttle box as above described is found'to be fairlysatisfactory, but is much better if the inner end of the plate is is supported or backed .up by a rigid supporting member. The invention provides a supporting member 2! which extends from the top plate I! forwardlyand downwardly in front of the inner end of the front box plate. This member in its preferred form consists of a rigid finger which is adjustably fixed to the plate H by screws 22, 22 which pass through slots in the finger. Thefinger 2| is adjusted so that its downwardly extending portion 23 will be engaged by the plate l8 when the latter has been moved forwardly by the incoming shuttle. Forward movement of the inner end of the front box plate is thus limited, to permit the shuttle to enter the box while still holding the shuttle firmlyi against the guide surface l0.
g The bobbin changing operation, as is well known in the art, occurs when the shuttle is boxed at the replenishing side of the loom, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2. As the lay moves rearwardly after such operation, the shuttle is picked out of the shuttle box toward the other side of the loom. As soon as the shuttle leaves the shuttle box, the inner end of the plate l8springs rearwardly away from the portion 23 of the. finger 2i, leaving a space (see Figs. 3 and 4) which constitutes a path for the exit of the incoming filling end 1 from the shuttle box. This removal of the end I from the shuttle box is accomplished by the rearward movement 'of the lay, the filling I end being attached to a stationary thread holder 24 in the usual manner. ,The portion 2 3 of the fingeris inclined as shown to permit the filling end I to come out of the shuttle box more readily. This finger also prevents the filling end fromreentering the shuttle box.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim: 1
1. A shuttle'box for the replenishing side of a bobbin changing loom, said shuttle box comprising a back box plate having a top guard plate, a
front box plate the top edge of which is spaced from the front edge of said top plate, and a rigid supporting member extending from said top plate forwardly and downwardly in front of the inner end of said front box plate, said inner end of said front box plate being biased rearwardly away from said member to provide a path for the exit of an incoming filling end and being movable forwardly into engagement with said member by an incoming shuttle, whereby said member supports said front box plate and limits forward movement thereof.
2. A shuttle box for the replenishing side of a bobbin changing loom, said shuttle box comprising a back box plate having a top guard plate, a front box plate the top edge of which is spaced from the front edge of said top plate, and a rigid supporting finger fixed to said top plate and extending forwardly and downwardly in front of the inner end of said front box plate, said inner end of said front box plate being supported by said finger when a shuttle is in the box and being biased to move rearwardly away from said finger when no shuttle is in the box, to thereby permit removal of an incoming filling end over the top of the front box plate.
3. A shuttle box for the replenishing side of a bobbin changing loom, said shuttle box comprising a back box plate having a top guard plate, a resilient front box plate the outer end of which is fixed and the inner end of which is free, the top.

In a bobbin changing loom, a lay having a shuttle box at the replenishing side of the loom, said shuttle boxcomprising a fioor, a back box plate having a top guard plate, a front box plate, and a rigid supporting finger extending from said top plate forwardly and downwardly in front of the inner end of said front box plate, the outer end of said front box plate being secured to the lay and the inner end thereof being free and being movable forwardly and rearwardly into and out of engagement with said finger, for the purpose described.
5.'In a bobbin changing loom, a lay having a shuttle box at the replenishing side of the loom,
said shuttle box comprising a floor, aback box said top plate for removal of an incoming filling end, and a rigid supporting finger fixed to said top plate and extending forwardly and downwardly in front of the inner end of said front box plate, said inner end of said front box plate being biased to move rearwardly away from said finger when no shuttle is in the box but being movableforwardly into engagement with said finger by an incoming shuttle.
