Description
T. ME IN-HOLD. Harmonica.
No. 207,616. Patented Sept. 3, I878.
NU MAS/(M) 8W0? M 44% @4476 %%4/4 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE MEINHOLD, OF KLINGENTHAL, SAXONY, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARMONICAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,616, dated September 3, 1878; application filed April 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE MEINHoLn, of Klingenthal, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Harmonicas or Mouth-Organs, as fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
The object I have in view is to produce a double harmonica which will not corrode or oxidize, the mouth of the player not being brought into contact with any metallic surfaces; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts composing my double harmonica, as fully hereinafter explained.
7 In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved lnstrument, and Fig. 2
a transverse section of the same.
The harmonica is made of a board, A, of wood, which is slotted on both sides nearly to its transverse center, to form the blow-holes a. Upon the board A are secured the metallic reed-plates B, with one or two reeds connecting with each blow-hole. To the opposite sides of the board A are attached the shields O, which cover the reed-plates and extend to the side edges of the board. These shields are made of wood, hard rubber, or glass, and have cut through them the sound-openings c.
The lips of the player slide back-and forth in contact with the non-corrosive shields C, while his tongue touches the slotted edges of the wood-board A, the parts always tasting sweet to the mouth, and never oxidizing.
What I claim as my invention is A double harmonica consisting of the board A, slotted from both sides to form blow-holes a, the reed-plates B, attached to such board, and the shields O, of wood or hard rubber, havin g sound-openings c, and secured to the board A, so as to form the mouth-piece on each side of the instrument, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
THEODORE MEINHOLD.
