EMMONS HAMLIN, OF WINOHESTER, ASSIGNOR TO MASON & HAMLIN ORGAN COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Design No. 4,161,l dated June 21, 1870.
DESIGN FOR AN ORG-AN.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit 'may concern Bc it known that I, Emmons HAMLIN, of NVinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented or produced anlmproved Design for an Organ; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sniicicnt to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
My invention 01 new design has particular reference to those instruments of that class of reed musical instruments known as parlor or cabinet organs, in which the reeds, wind-box, key-board, and other parts are enclosed in an upright case extending to the door; and
My improvement consists in a new form given to said enclosing case, which new form not only imparts elegance to the instrument, but enhances its musical properties.
The new design or form is shown in the accompanying photograph embodied in a Mason 85 Hamlin organ.
a shows the main part of the case;
b, the front part; and
c, the key-board.
Instead of' making the main or rear part of the case of a length corresponding tothe length oi' the keyboard, I extend the opposite ends as seen in the photograph, thereby forming at each end a vertical chamber, d, the vertical end panels c oi' the extended chambers connecting with the narrow front of the instrument by inclined panels f.
It will be seenat a glance that this improvement adds greatly to the effective appearance of the organ, taking away the crude box-shape which these instruments generally possess, and the vertical spaces at the ends of the organ form two resonant chambers, which improve, to a very marked effect, the tone oi the instrument.
The connection between the narrow front and the widened rear and rectangularly-shaped case, may be made by variously inclined panels, my improvement consisting in giving the long and extended form to the rear part of the case, and connecting it with the narrower front part by suitable panel-work.
I claim the new design or form for a cabinet or parlor organ, substantially as shown and described.
Executed May 20th, f1.1). 1870.
EMIVIONS HAMLIN.
