This invention relates to sanitary appliances, and more particularly refers to improvements in water closet bidet combinations. In various copending applications, Serial Nos. 23,073, filed May 22, 1935, 58,073, filed January 8, 1936, 6,062 now Patent 2,036,984, and 12,239, now Patent 2,036,935, I have described and claimed arrangements in which a bidet is mounted directly on top of a water closet bowl, and is adapted to be moved from inoperative to operative position and vice versa, Without interfering with the normal operation of the water closet.

The types of bidets therein described, being as they are, adapted for use in connection with existing water closets, are open to several minor objections that I have endeavored by the present invention to meet. In the first place, the bidet is always exposed to view whether in its lowered or raised position; its front end is extended to project frontwardly of the water closet bowl in order the provide suflicient room for the insertion of the hand of theuser; and furthermore, since the bidet is placed on top of the water closet seat, it naturally stands somewhat higher than the seat itself, and in certain cases this has been found to interfere with the comfort of the user.

The primary object of the present invention is toprovide a novel and improved combination of water closet and bidet, especially constructed in a single unit, both thewater closet and the bidet being designed with a view to meeting their individual requirements, each without interfering with or affecting the requirements of the other.

Another object is to provide a device of the character specified, in which particular attention has been paid to its attractive appearance by providing a special construction whereby the bidet is totally enclosed and concealed from View when not in use.

A further object is to provide, in a unit comprising a water closet combined with a bidet, a specially designed water closet bowl, somewhat lower than those in current use, making it possible to have the bidet resting upon the seat or cover at a convenient height, without interfering with the comfortable use of the water closet.

A still further object is to provide, in a device of the. character specified, a novel arrangement whereby the bidet can be directly connected to a source of water supply and can be discharged at the rear of the bowl when the bidet is raised from its operative to its inoperative position.

My invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, inwhich:

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section illustrating an alternative embodiment of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the structure forming the subject of my invention comprises a specially designed bowl 20, having a front basin 2| provided with a syphon 22 leading to the discharge outlet 23, and a rear chamber 24' also connected to discharge outlet 23 through a passage 25. If desired, basin 2| can be extended to the rear of the bowl in substitution of chamber 24, and passage 25 can be omitted, the rear sur face of the basin being of course given a suitable inclination so that water discharged at the rear will descend to the front inlet of the syphon.

The front basin 2| which forms the water closet bowl proper, is preferably provided with the usual seat 26, and its cover 21, said seat and cover being pivotally mounted at the rear at 28 so as to be operable independently of each other. However, the use of a seat or cover, or both, is not absolutely essential to the invention.

The rear extension 29 of the bowl has a seat 30 over which rests a vertically extended casing 3|, forming a chamber 32, covered by a top 33. Said chamber communicates with chamber 24- by means of a passage 34, provided in the bottom surface of seat 30.

A water connection 35 of any suitable design, is placed within chamber 32 and is connected to a source of water supply by a tubular member 36, in the usual manner; said connection leads to a peripheral passage 3'! extending around the rim of the bowl and serving the peripheral discharge groove 33, provided within basin 2| in proximity of the upper edge thereof.

Chamber 32 is wide enough to accommodate a relatively shallow bidet 39 carried by a board 40,

the lower edge of which is hinged to the lower front member M of casing 3|.

The upper end of board 40 is preferably provided with a marginal notch 42 adapted to receive the tip of the fingers, making it possible to lower the board and the bidet carried thereby from the inoperative position shown in Fig. 3 to the operative position shown in Fig. 4;, where board 40 rests directly upon the cover 2'! of the seat.

The bidet .is preferably made with a pear shaped contour, wider at the front than at the rear, as Fig. 4 clearly shows, this being the contour which is generally used in bidets of the conventional type.

The bidet is connected to a source of water supply or preferably to both a source of cold and hot water supply, in any suitable manner. For instance, in the drawings I show a distributor tube 43 extending from side to side of chamber 32, said tube being connected to a source of cold water supply by connection 44, and to a source of hot water supply by a connection 45, said connections being controlled respectively by valves 46, 41. Distributor 43 therefore acts as a sort of mixing chamber regulating the temperature of the water supplied through

At one end tube 43 is shown provided with a valve 48, which is connected by means of a flexible tubular connection 49, to a tubular member 50 leading to a discharge outlet at the rear of bidet. This arrangement permits of filling the bidet by pouring water into it through tubular member 50.

At the other end tube 43 is shown provided with another valve 52 which is connected by a flexible tubular connection 53, to a tubular member 54 running under the bidet and leading to a nozzle 55 from which water can issue in the form of a vertically directed spray, said nozzle being located in a position where it will best serve its purpose of local cleansing.

By virtue of this arrangement it is thus possible to either fill the bidet in the usual manner or to supply water to it in the form of a vertically directed spray. After use the bidet is raised to its inoperative position where it is entirely concealed from view, and during its upward movement the water therein contained will automatically discharge into chamber 24, to be drained through discharge outlet 23.

Although casing or housing 3| is shown resting directly upon the rear extension of the bowl, it is of course possible to design it for attachment to the wall in proximity of the rear end of the bowl, after the fashion of an ordinary flushing tank.

It is understood that the bowl 2!! is preferably made somewhat lower than the usual water closet bowl, so that when the bidet is lowered in position it will still be usable without discomfort.

It is obvious that water can be supplied to the bidet in any desired manner; the main inventive idea residing in the provision of a unitary structure in which the bidet can be concealed from View so as not to mar the appearance of what should be a high class bathroom fixture; a structure furthermore, which can conveniently be used both as a water closet and as a bidet, requiring a relatively small space and adapted to be produced and installed at relatively low cost.

The casing housing the bidet in its inoperative position can also be made with a water compartment capable of holding a supply of water sufficient for flushing the water closet bowl, if desired. As an example, in Fig. 5 I illustrate a closet bowl 56, on the rear extension of which is placed the casing 51, formed with a tank compartment 58 which can be discharged through outlet 59 for flushing the bowl. Like in the previous case, water can be supplied to the bidet through suitable connections 60.

Furthermore, asstated, it is also possible to discharge the bidet by tilting it upwardly in the manner described, by causing the bowl to extend to the rear under the casing, without necessarily dividing it into a main and a supplementary chamber.

It is within the scope of my invention to apply the inventive idea also in connection with water closet-bidet structures such as are described in my copending applications above mentioned, in which a bowl of substantially standard design can be used, in combination with a bidet adapted to be discharged within the bowl itself, and not into a supplementary discharge chamber, or a bowl extension at the rear.

It is also within the scope of my invention to apply the inventive idea in a form simpler than those illustrated, by providing a water closet bowl and a casing, as shown, said casing being adapted to enclose a bidet which is entirely separate from the rest of the structure and which can be removed from its housing by hand and placed on top of the water closet bowl, seat, or cover; said bidet consisting of a suitably shaped basin which can be filled by pouring water into it by hand.

The constructional details of my invention may vary to a considerable degree from those shown without departing from the inventive idea. The drawings will, therefore, be understood as being intended for illustrative purposes only and not in a limiting sense. I, accordingly, reserve the right to carry my invention into practice in all those ways and manners which may enter, fairly, into the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A water closet-bidet combination, comprising a water closet bowl having an open top rear extension, a housing upwardly extending above the said rear extension, and a bidet pivotally mounted with respect to said bowl and housing, adapted to be enclosed within said housing when said bidet is raised from its operative position on top of said bowl, to its inoperative upwardly extending position, said bidet being arranged to discharge its contents into said rear extension during the upward tilting movement thereof.

2. A water closet-bidet combination, comprising a water closet bowl having an open top rear extension, a housing upwardly extending above the said rear extension, 2. seat and a cover above the major front portion of said bowl, and a bidet pivotally mounted with respect to said bowl and housing, adapted to be enclosed within said housing when said bidet is raised from its operative position on top of said cover, to its inoperative upwardly extending position, said bidet being arranged to discharge its contents into said rear extension during the upward tilting movement thereof.

3. A unitary water closet-bidet structure, comprising an open top water closet bowl having a rear extension, a housing resting upon and upwardly extending from said extension, a seat and a cover above the major front portion of said bowl, and a bidet pivotally mounted with respect to said bowl and housing, adapted to be enclosed within said housing when said bidet is raised from its operative position on top of said cover, to its inoperative upwardly extending position,

said bidet being arranged to discharge its contents into said rear extension during the upward tilting movement thereof.

4. A water closet-bidet combination comprising a water closet bowl, an open front housing upwardly extending above and at the rear of said bowl, a lid forming a closure for said housing, having its lower edge hinged to the front of said housing, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said bowl, and a bidet carried by said lid adapted to be totally concealed within said housing when said lid closes the front of said housing.

5. A unitary water closet-bidet structure, comprising a water closet bowl having a rear extension, an open front housing resting upon and upwardly extending from said extension, a lid forming a closure for said housing, having its lower edge hinged to the front of said housing, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said bowl, and a bidet carried by said lid adapted to be totally concealed within said housing when said lid closes the front of said housing.

6. A unitary water closet-bidet structure, comprising a water closet bowl having a rear extension, an open front housing resting upon and upwardly extending from said extension, a seat and a cover above the major front portion of said bowl, a lid forming a closure for said housing, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said cover, and a bidet carried by said lid adapted to be totally concealed within said housing when said lid closes the front of said housing.

'7. A water closet-bidet combination comprising a water closet bowl, an open front housing upwardly extending above and at the rear of said bowl, a lid forming a closure for said housing, having its lower edge hinged to the front of said housing, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said bowl, a bidet carried by said lid adapted to be totally concealed within said housing when said lid closes the front of said housing, means concealed within said housing for supplying water to said bidet, and controlling means therefor also concealed within said housing.

8. A unitary water closet-bidet structure, comprising a water closet bowl having a rear extension, an open front housing resting upon and upwardly extending from said extension, a seat and a cover above the major front portion of said bowl, a lid forming a closure for said housing, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said cover, a bidet carried by said lid adapted to be totally concealed within said housing when said lid closes the front of said housing, means concealed within said housing for supplying water to said bidet, and controlling means therefor also concealed within said hous- 9. In a device of the character described, a closet bowl having a cross member across its rim dividing the open top of said bowl into a main front and an auxiliary rear portion the top of said rear portion being substantially level with the top of said front portion, a seat and a cover for said front portion, and pivotal supports for said seat and cover, upwardly extending from said cross member.

A water closet-bidet combination, comprising a water closet bowl having an open top rear extension, a seat and cover above the major front portion of said bowl, and a bidet pivotally mounted with respect to said bowl, said bidet being movable from its operative position on top of said cover to an upwardly extending inoperative position, and being arranged to discharge its contents into said rear extension during the upward tilting movement thereof.

12. A unitary water closet-bidet structure,

comprising a water closet bowl having an open top rear extension, a seat and a cover above the major front portion of said bowl, a lid pivotally mounted with respect to said bowl, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said cover or to be raised to an upwardly extending inoperative position, and a bidet carried by said lid adapted tobe concealed behind said lid when said lid is raised to its inoperative position, said bidet being arranged to discharge its contents into said rear extension during the upward tilting movement of said lid.

13. A unitary water closet-bidet structure, comprising a water closet bowl having an open top rearextension, a seat and a cover above the major front portion of said bowl, a lid pivotally mounted with respect to said bowl, said lid being adapted to be lowered to rest on top of said cover or to be raised to an upwardly extending inoperative position, a bidet carried by said lid adapted to be concealed behind said lid when said lid is raised to its inoperative position, said bidet being arranged to discharge its contents into said rear extension during the upward tilting movement of said lid, and means for supplying water to said bidet.
