HYDRAULIC PRESS AND SIMILAR APPARATUS 7 Filed Feb. 1, l 934 6-- YCERINE J m/m; 49W Jail/ Patented Mar. so, 1937 V UNITED STATES HYDRAULIC PREisAgND SIMILAR APPA- David Sciaky, Paris, France application February 1, 1934, Serial No, 709,390 In France February 6, 1933 1 Claim.
The present invention concerns hydraulicpresses and apparatus of this kind.
The object of the present invention is to provide means for mixing a certain amount of glyc- 5 erine with the water of the press, these means being adapted to work in combination with said press. 1 i
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will'be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, given merely by way of example, and in which:
The only figure is an axial sectional view of a hydraulic press according to the present invention. 1
As shown by the drawing, the hydraulic press comprises, in the known manner, a cylinder i in which moves a piston 2 rigidly connected with a plunger 3. This plunger, which cooperates with packing members 4,5, and 6 of any suitable structure for insuring a fluidtight fit, moves in a chamber ill from which the liquid under pressure can flow out through outlet conduit 1. This plunger imparts the desired pressure to the liquid in chamber i0 and conduit I, said pressure being transmitted to the organ that is subjected to the action of the press, through said liquid. Plunger 2 is actuated by injecting a fluid under pressure into the chamber 9 of-cylinder I.
Any leakage of water that may occur in the apparatus is compensated by the injection into vessel ll of liquid coming from a reservoir 9 placed at a higher level, this injection taking place when plunger 2 is in the position shown in the drawing, that is to say in its position of rest. For
ports ii which, in the position oi rest of said plunger, open-into a chamber l2 located between packing members i and 6. Into this chamber i2 which the pressure can be varied.
The axis of the apparatus is vertically disposed. It will be readily understood that, with such an arrangement, the air that accumulates at the upper part of chamber I0 is evacuated as soon as said chamber is brought into communication with tank 9.
As shown by the drawing. the liquid under pressureinthe presscanbeutilisedforacting ona piston l9 moving in a cylinder it, this piston ll being also subiected to the action of a return spring i9. Therod of piston ll may for instance control the displacements of the movable electrade of an electric welding machine and exert the welding pressure. According to the present this purpose. I provide at the end of plunger 3 also opens a pipe I: connected with tank 9 in (CI. fill-54.5)
invention, the stroke of piston I 5, and therefore the stroke of the organ controlled by said piston, can be adjusted by varying the pressure under which the liquid that serves to compensate leakage is placed. For this purpose, I may for in- 5 stance feed, through a pipe I], a fluid under the desired pressure into tank 9. When the system is in the position of rest, if the pressure in the tank is varied, piston l5 moves in a downward direction. Therefore, in the course of its active 10 stroke, this piston IE will move a shorter distance. When the liquid in the hydraulic press is a mix ture of .water with glycerine or any other suitable mixture, I may provide a tank i9 for the glycerine at the top of which air is trapped and compressed, said tank i9 being closed by a check valve 20, said tank l9 being connected with chamber i2 through a conduit. with such an arrangement, a certain amount of glycerine can be fed to chamber l0 for instance in the following manner: the parts being in the position shown in the drawing, the fluid pressure acting on tank 9 is raised until liquid from I; is forced into tank I9. or atleast into the conduit connecting said tank i9 with chamber l2. This liquid mixes with the glycerin present in this conduit and .said tank. when the pressure acting ontank 9 is reduced, the fluid pressure' at the top of tank l9 forces back the mixture thus formed into chamber l0.
According, to myinvention. I may connect with said chamber l9 an organ for controlling the pressure, said organ being shown at 22. This organ may for instance consist of a pressure gauge 22 having a contact 23 and a pointer 24 inserted in an electric circuit including for instance an alarm signal (such as a lamp 29) and a battery 25.
It should be well understood that the above described embodiments are only examples of how my invention can be carried out. For instance tank 9 is only a possible form of the source of liquid under pressure that is the essential feature of the device according to my invention. It
might be replaced by any pipe containing water under pressure and, in this case, by acting on a pressure adjusting organ or a'valve provided in said pipe, it would be also possible to vary the stroke of the organ controlled bythe hydraulic pres.
In a general manner, while I have, in the above specification, described what I deem to be practical and efliclent embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes,- made in the arrangement, disposition and form of the put: without departing from the principle or my invention as comprehended within the scope pistonotlarler nui'eeebeinz-ldlptedtobeectuetedbyafluid undcrpreesure'eliquidmiing the cyiinderoithepietonoiemeller em'ieene moveblememberoperetivebytheliqmdmm'e in eeldiut mentioned cylinder, niiquid containinztankplecedatneerteindietanceaboveeaid eylindcre, meansin thelmniler'pilton for conlineetingeeidtenkwiththelutmentionedeyl hiderwhennidpietonsdredn mammal oireefiacloledreeervoireonteiningsliquidtohe mixed withtheliquidtromeaid tank.
