UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
lM PROVEMENT IN TO BACCO-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,498, dated August 27, 1878 application filed July 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Valuable Improvement in Tobacco Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the con struct-ion and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of a tobacco cutter with my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-sec tion taken on line a; a; of Fig. 1.
This invention has relation more particularly to that class of cutting-instruments used for the purpose of cuttin g tobacco in the plug;
I and the object thereof is to devise means to prevent the knife-blade from becoming clogged with the tobacco, which tends to impede the successful operation of the instrument in the process of cutting or severing the pieces of tobacco from the plug.
Theinvention therefore consistsin one ormore scrapers, which bear against the side or sides of the cutting-blade, so that at every upward stroke of the knife-blade the same is relieved of any particles of tobacco that may adhere thereto, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
As my invention is applicable to cutters of various kinds, a detailed description of the cutting-instrument is not deemed necessary, as I have merely shown one of the many cuttinginstruments now used to more fully illustrate the application and workings of my invention.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the cutting-instrument, secured to a base, a; and B, the cutting-knife, attached to a carrier, 1), and to which is pivoted a suitable handle, 0, connecting with a curved rod, 0, to a radius-arm, (1, whereby the knife is given the required cutting motion. To the sides of the frame B are suitably secured plates 0, provided with upwardlyprojecting arms 6, to which are secured metal or other suitable springs f, the same bearing against the sides of the frame A. To the plates 0 are bolted or otherwise secured scrapers D, which bear upon the sides of the knife. The plates 0 are so connected to the frame A as to allow of a slight yielding motion to the varying thickness of the knifeblade, thereby insuring the scrapers at all times during the movement of the blade being brought in contact therewith.
It will be readily understood that the device herein described may be variously modified to adapt the scrapers to different forms of cutting instruments without departing from the essence of my invention.
The scrapers D may be made of any suitable material; but, in practice, I have found metal to be better adapted to the purpose, as it more effectually cleans the knife-blade of the tobacco, and is less liable to become worn. The springs j, which I have shown as fiat, may be coiled, or a rubber spring may be substituted, as it is not my desire to confine myself to the precise material shown and the particular construction of the several parts herein escribed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a cutting-blade of a tobacco-cutting instrument, of one or more scrapers arranged to bear against the side or sides of the blade, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a cutting-blade of a tobacco-cutting instrument, of one or more scrapers, bearing against one or both sides of the blade, and constructed or arranged to have a yielding motion, and disposed at an incline to the sides of the blade, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my namein the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS S. BUNKER.
