(o1. 2-94) This invention relates towearing apparel and relates more particularly to a coat for hunters,` hikers, persons in military service, etc. A general object of the invention is to provide a jacket i or coat vthat is adapted to provide ample protection and warmth when needed and that is not burdensome and. does not cause discomfort to 1lthe wearer when such Warmthand protection is not required.

l The warmth and protection of a coat is required by hikers, hunters, and those in military service during certain times of the day but at other times ofthe day a coat is not required and becomes burdensome as it must be worn vto the discomfort of the wearer or must'l be carried over his arm where it interferes with his free move- Another object of the invention ist@ provide i a 'coat that may be worn with the usual comfort 'no and 'ease when a coat is required and that may be readily arranged as a compact pack on the back of the wearer when not required for warmth or protection.

Another object of the invention is to provide a vest and a Acoat combined in one garment in a manner that allows the coat to be worn over the Vest in the usual manner and that allows the `coat to be reversed and easily and quickly made into a compact bundle or pack to be carriedon q to the back, the vest being worn as a garment and as a convenient and comfortable means for car- N rying the coat.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combination garment of the character menaa tioned invvhich the coat may have the usual 'pockets and in addition thereto may have pockets 'for carrying game, etc., that are conveniently accessible for use when the coat is worn in the usual 'manner as well as when the coat is lo reversed and made intoa pack on the back of the wearer. f

The article Vof apparel provided by the present l5 invention includes, generally, a coat proper, C,

and a vest V connected with or combined with the use or employment of this particular type of coat. The coatC includes a back 22 and the usual. breast orfront portions l0 that may be closed by buttonsll. The coat C is provided with a typical collar i2 and the usual sleeves 30 I3. The coat C may be provided with any desired number of pockets of various characters. In thedrawing I have shown side patch pockets I4 on the coat C and a rear game pocket l5 in the lower` rear or tail' portion of the coat. In 35 accordance with the invention the game pocket I5 is readily accessible when. the coat is being worn in the usual manner as well as when the coat is reversed and worn as a pack on the back of the wearer. An opening i6 is provided in the 40 exterior of the coat C to communicate with the A similar opening Il ris provided in the inner side of the coat Cto coinmunicate with the pocket l5. The pocket openings i6 Yand ll may be in the nature of vertical 45 slits and may be closed by suitable releasable slide fasteners I8.

The coat C may be formed of any desired material and may be lined and finished 'as found practical. u

The vest V is adapted to be worn under the coat C in the usualmanner and may be worn when the coat C is not required to form a carrier for the fcoat as well as a vest. The vest V may be a sleeveless low-cut close fitting garment .buttoned :or otherwise secured clown the front.

'Ihe Vest V illustrated in the drawing includes the usual front portions 29 and a back 2|. In practice the vest V may be somewhat shorter than the coat C and may be provided with the usual pockets 22a.

It is an important feature of the invention that the coat C and the vest V are connected together to constitute a single garment or piece of wearing apparel. The inner side of the coat back 22 is attached to the outer side of the vest back 2I so that the Vest V may be worn in the usual manner and the coat C maybe worn in the usual manner over the vest V or maybe reversed at the back of the wearer or folded in a pack and carried on the back of the wearer, when the vest is worn as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. It may be found desirable to permanently connect thevest V and coat C by stitching.

In the preferred construction the coat C and vest V are connected so that a pocket 23 is left or formed between the opposing parts of the A substantially YU-shaped line of stitching S connects the inner side of the coat back 22 with the outer side of the vest back 2|. The line of stitching S has spaced substantially vertical side parts 24 and a horizontal lower portion 25 extending between the vertical portions 24 leaving a spacious open topped space forming the pocket 23. 'I'he upper ends of the portions 24l of the stitching are spaced some distance below the coat collar I2 while the horizontal portion 25 of the stitching is preferably spaced above the pocket openings I6 and I1. If desired or found practical the horizontal portion 25 of the stitching may close the upper end of the game pocket I5. The pocket 23 formed as described above is conveniently accessible to the wearer when the coat C is reversed and worn at his back. When the coat is not required for warmth or protection the garment may be removed and the coat C reversed and rolled and held in the rolled and packed condition bymeans of the buttons I I or by any other suitable means.

The invention provides means for holding or l retaining the reversed coat C in a compact bundle `the simple form of the invention illustrated in the drawing spaced buttons 21 are provided on the inside of the coat back 22 adjacent the collar I2 and buttonholes 28 are provided in the lower portion of the coat back to cooperate with the buttons 21 to releasably hold the reversed coat inthe folded or packed condition illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.

It is believed that the utility and practicability of the garment provided by this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing Vdetailed description. Under normal conditions or when the weather requires, the coat C may be worn over the vest V in the usual manner. When worn in this manner the pockets I4 as well as the game pocket I5 are conveniently accessible to the wearer. When the coat C is no longer required for warmth or protection it may be removed and the coat C reversed and rolled and maintained in this rolled condition by the buttons II or other suitable means. The vest may then be re-donned and the reversed coat worn or carried on the back as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. If desired, however, the reversed coat may be folded into the more compact form and held in that condition by the cooperation of the buttons 21 with the button-holes 28 and worn as a bundle or pack on the shoulders of the wearer, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. It will be apparent that both the pocket I5 and the upper pocket 23 are easily accessible to the wearer when the coat is worn as shown in Fig. 2 or is worn as shown inFig. 3. When the reversed coat C is worn as shown in these figures it does not in any way hamper the movements of the wearer but is always accessible for use when required. The garment of this invention is inexpensive to manufacture and has a Wide range of use.

Having described only a typical preferred form and application of my invention I do not wish to vbe limited or restricted to the specific details set forth, but wish to reserve to myself any modifications or variations that may appear to those skilled in the art or fall within the scope of the following claims.

Having described my invention. I claim:

l. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be Worn within the coat comprising front portions and a back portion, means connecting the inner side of the coat to the back portion of the vest whereby the coat may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, and means on the coat for maintaining the same reversed and folded upon itself when thus carried on the wearers back.

2. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be worn within the coat comprising front portions and a back portion, means connecting the back of the coat to the back portion of the vest whereby the coat may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, and releasable means for holding the coat folded upon itself in the form of a pack when in said reversed condition.

3. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be worn within the coat comprising front portions and a back portion, means connecting the inner side of the coat to the vest whereby the coat may be reversed and carriedon the wearers back by means of the vest, and releasable fastening devices on the inner side of the coat for' holding the coat folded upon itself when in said reversed condition.

4. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be worn within the coat, the coat and vest having opposing adjacent back parts, and means connecting the coat to the vest whereby vthe coat may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, said means comprising stitching attaching the back part of the coat to the back part of the vest and outlining a pocket space between said opposing adjacent parts of the coat and vest, the stitching being interrupted to leave an opening through which said pocket space is accessible.

5. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be worn within the coat comprising front portions and a back portion, means connecting the back of the coat and the back portion of the vest whereby the coat may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, and a pocket in the coat, there being an opening in the inner side of the coat communicating with the pocket whereby the ,pocket is accessible when the coat is in the reversed condition.

6. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be Worn within the coat, means connecting the .back of the coat with the back of the vest whereby the coat may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, and a pocket in the coat, there being openings in the inner and outer sides of the coat communicating with the pocket whereby the pocket is accessible when the coat is being worn and when the coat is in the reversed condition.

7. In combination, a coat, a vest, means connecting the back of the coat with the back of the vest whereby the coat may be worn over the vest and may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, said means comprising a substantially U-shaped line of securing means joining the back of the coat and vest and defining a' pocket space `between the backs of the vest and coat which space isaccessible through the opening between the ends of said line of securing means, and a pocket in the coat Whose interior is -accessible when the coat is being worn and when the coat is in the reversed necting the coat with the back of the vest whereby the coat may be worn over the vest and may be reversed and `carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, said means comprising a line of securing means joining the backs of the coat and vest to outline a pocket space between the backs of the Vest and coat, said line of securing means being interrupted to leave an access opening for said pocket space, and releasable means for holding the coat folded upon itself when in the reversed condition so that it may be carried in a compact pack. 9. A garment of the character described including a coat, a vest to be worn within the coat, and means connecting the inner side of the coat to the vest whereby the coat may be reversed and carried on the wearers back by means of the vest, said means comprising a line of securing means joining the back of the coat and the back of the vest and outlining a pocket space between the same, said line of securing means being interrupted to leave an opening through which the pocket space is accessible.
