Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE W'. A. HUNTER, OF BRYAN, OHIO.
TYPE-CASE FOR PRINTERS.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 20,714, dated June 29, 1858.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM A. HUNTER, of Bryan, in the county of Villiams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Type- Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operat-ion of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, represents a perspective view of my improved type case. Fig. 2, represents a vertical cross section through the same. Fig. 3, represents a longitudinal vertical section through the same.
My invention is founded upon the general belief that the dust arising from the abra-sion of the type in the cases produces what is called printers sickness, they being composed of lead and antimony, which are both poisonous metals; and the nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction of my type case, whereby it is kept constantly clear from the dust resultinOv from the abrasion of the types, and in collecting said dust on a shelf or drawer whence it can be removed when required.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a type case which is divided in the usual number of compartments, for the reception of the different. letters of types; the bottom of this type case is made of a screen or perforated metal sheet or its equivalent as represented in the drawings.
The type is supported by this screen and any dust which may result from the abrasion of the types will drop through the perforations of the screen B, and fall on the shelf or drawer C. The shelf or drawer C, is tted in suitable grooves of the type case frame, and can be drawn in and out when required for the purpose of removing the dust which may have accumulated thereon.
In the type cases which have been used heretofore, the injurious dust which lay in the type case has been constantly stirred up by the active movements of the type setter in selecting and distributing the type from and to the various boxes and this dust is inhaled by the operator leaning over the case. This is entirely prevented in my arrangement for when the dust has dropped through the screen B, it is at rest and cannot be moved by selecting or distributing the type.
D, represents a bellows which is attached to the secondary frame F, of the type case; the object of this bellows is to force or draw a blast through the types when in the type case for the purpose of drying them after they have been washed and distributed in their respective cases. For this purpose the shelf C, is perforated by a number of holes a, and is provided with a valve Z), which opens downward, while the bottom piece E of the bellows is perforated by the holes c, and provided with a valve d, which also opens downward. When the bellows are to be operated, the shelf C is withdrawn, and the dust removed therefrom, and then by operating the bellows, a draft is created which passes through the types and through the screen B, by which the drying of the types is materially accelerated.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. Making the bottom of a type case of a metallic screen or other perforated material, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described. Y
2. I also claim the sliding shelf C, incombination with the perforated bottom B, of a type case substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM A. HUNTER.
