UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. A. BUGKWALTER, OF KIMBERTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRICK-MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,626, dated October 4, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. A. BUCKWALTER, of Kiinberton, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Molds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a plan or top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same partially bisected. Fig. 3 is a side sectional view of the same, taken in the line A B, Fig. 1. Fig. t is a transverse section of the same, taken in the line C D, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a frame constructed ofv wood, or metal, of skeleton form and quadrilateral. This frame has inclined pendants, cl, attached to the inner surfaces of its sides, and extending down, atequal distances apart, in line with the partition plates, c, which willpresently be described. The upper parts of the pendants, cl, except the end ones, are connected by traverse bars, M, and the lower parts are connected by traverse bars, N. The upper surface of the frame, A, is formed of traverse strips, a, attached to longitudinal bars, E E, the latter being secured at their ends to the end pieces of the frame, A, and the sides of the frame are formed of sla-ts, L, and longitudinal bars, H and the inner surfaces of the slats, L, are inclined, as shown in Fig. 4. The pendants, CZ, are groovcd or recessed at their inner or face sides so as to form a projecting flanch, cZ, at each side. In addition to the slats, L, the sides of the frame, A, are provided with inclined slats, L, the inclination of the latter' corresponding with the inclination of the inner surfaces of the slats, L.
B represents what may be termed an expanding frame. It is formed of plates, o, which are placed one at each side of the several bars, M N, and said plates have pins,
'bearing against the inclined pendants, CZ
7', attached, which are fitted in the recesses of the pendants, d, (see Fig. 3). The ends of the plates, c, at their lower parts have each a small guide strip, 7c, attached, which strips work underneath guide strips, h, attached to bar, b', which bars have each plates, 75k, attached, some or all of which are provided with staples, g, which clasp or encompass the inclined slats, L. The strips, le, of plates, c, are allowed to slide freely underneath the strips, it.
b are end pieces which have each a plate, c, attached; said plates, c, passing upward within the end pieces of the frame, A, and
5 the plates, o, being also provided with pins, f, which iit into the recesses of their pendants. The lower parts of the plates, c, are also provided with strips, lo, which fit underneath strips, 7L, on the bars, b.
From the above description it will be seen that the plates, c c and form the molds which work within the frame, A. lVhen the plates, c c and if, are within the frame, A', the molds receive the clay, and the clay is compressed therein by the followers, when said plates are within the frame. Vhen the clay is fully compressed the frame, A, is raised and the plates, o c if, are expanded and the capacity of the molds are increased, so that the molded clay may be readily discharged.
This improvement may be arranged in any proper way so as to be operated automatically in connection with followers.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rThe expanding frame, B, formed of the movable plates, c c if, and fitted within the frame, A', provided with the inclined or taper pendants, (Z, and inclined slats, L L', the plates, c c if, being connected respectively to the pendants, d, and slats, L', by the pins, 7L', and staples, g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. A. BUCKVALTER.
Vitnesses P. Gr. CAREY, ABRAHAM BUCKWALTER.
