BANK-CHECK CANCELER.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM M. SIMP- soN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Press for Canceling Bank- Cheeks and other Instruments in llVriting, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction and opera-tion of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2 a view of the canceling part of the press in t-he act of releasing the checks; Fig. 3 a View of the canceling part of the press with the checks fully canceled and released; Fig. 4,-, a view of one of the canceling sectors with its guide pin, detached from the disk O, and Fig. 5 is an edge view of the canceling knives and corresponding releasers.
The same letters indicate like parts in the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in substituting in the place of the canceling hammer and block now used by banks for canceling checks, a press with canceling knives attached to the piston of the press in combination with movable sectors in such a manner that a large number of checks or other papers may be cut through or canceled at one stroke of the press and at the same time the checks be forced from the knives or released, as the handle of the press is ybeing returned to its upright or acting position, without in any manner tearing or otherwise mutilating the checks.
In the figures a, a, a, are the canceling knives which may be formed of any desired O is the disk to which they are fastened at the points C, C, C. The disk O is attached to the piston of the press. The sectors D, D, D, are formed in such a manner as to be perfectly free to play up and down the disk O, by means of the guide pins E, E, E. The sectors D, D, D, are formed to correspond to the shape of the canceling knives ct, a, a, and extend longitudinally from knife to knife whatever may be the shape of the same. Heads are formed on the pins E, E,
19,384, dated February 16, 1858.A
E, as represented to prevent the sectors D, D, D, from becoming disconnected from the disk O.
The checks or other instruments to be canceled are represented by K, and the other parts of the press are constructed in the ordinary manner.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The checks, being placed upon the cutting plate of the press (Fig. l.) and the lever applied the knives a, a, a, are forced through the checks and the sectors D, D, D, are pressed up as represented in Fig. 2. The checks are now canceled but if sought to be removed in the ordinary manner from the knives they are liable to be torn or otherwise injured, precisely as is the case with the canceling hammers, now in use. To release the checks therefore from the knives the handle of the press is thrown back, and by so doing the heads of the pins E, E, E, are brought in contact with the barrel H, of the piston and are forced down carrying with them the sectors D, D, D, and perfectly releasing the checks from the knives as represented in Fig. 8. The barrel H, piston C, with the disk O and section pins E, E, E, are so arranged with respect to each other, that when the handle of the press is thrown back the disk O is brought close to I-I, and the pins E, E, E, are in contact with H, and forced down so that the sectors D, D, D, are fully in a line with the extreme edge of the canceling knives (Fig. 3). The handle of the press is adjusted to come in contact with the frame of the press as represented, in such a manner as to prevent the knives from being forced unduly upon the cutting plate, and thus saving them from being dulled or injured.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The application and use of the canceling knives a, a, a, in combination with an ordinary press for the purpose of canceling checks and other instruments in writing substantially as herein described.
2. I claim as new and of my own invention the use of the sectors D, D, D, operating between the knives a, a, a, through the disk O, by means of the pins E, E, E, and E, E, with the knives a, a, a, piston C and in Contact with the checks below and the barrel H, substantially as herein set forth. projecting edge of the barrel H, above, substantially in the manner and for the pur- WV. M. SIMPSON. 5 poses herein set forth. Witnesses:
3. I claim the combination together of the WM. BRADSHAW, disk O, the sectors D, D, D, and pins E, DANIEL F. TOMPKINS.
