This present invention relates to improvements in a safety attachment for straight razors and appertains particularly to one removably positioned on the conventional blade and applicable 5 to either side thereof.
An object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment for straight razors adapted to be held thereon by an adjustable spring tension.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this kind having the guard on one side of the blade and the spring clamping member operating against the opposite side of the blade so that the relation of the guard to the blade is the same irrespective of the pressure of the spring clamping means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment comprising a toothed guard held on either side of the razor blade by a longitudinally sliding spring clamping member coact- 20 ing with the opposite side of the blade.
A further object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment for straight razors including a guard plate carrying frame that slides on easily over the end of the razor blade and is provided, on the side of the blade away from the guard plate, with a longitudinally adjustable spring clamping member that tightens the frame and its guard plate securely on the blade against danger of accidental displacement and yet enables the attachment to be readily and rapidly adjusted on and for removal from the razor blade.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a safety attachment for straight razors of the nature and for the purposes described that is characterized by structural sim plicity, durability, efficiency and low cost of production whereby the same is rendered commercially desirable.
To the accomplishment of these and related objects as shall become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as shall be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
The invention will be best understood and can be more clearly described when reference is had to the drawing forming a part of this disclosure wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my attachment applied to the blade of a conventional straight razor;
Figure 2 is a similar elevation from the oppusite side;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal horizontal section as taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and
Figure 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 44 of Figure 2, in the direction indicated by the arows.
An attaching frame 5 is formed as an inverted U to straddle the top or back bone of the razor blade, the free ends of the front arm 6 and rear arm I thereof converging toward each other. Opposite longitudinal ends 8 of the front 6 are doubled back laterally on themselves on the outer face to hold a toothed guard plate 9 curved outwardly and notched along its lower edge ID that is intended to extend a suitable distance beyond the cutting edge of the razor blade The rear arm I of the U frame 5 has an elongated slot II in which rectangular block I2 is adapted to slide longitudinally. This block I2 is mounted on the outer face of a clamping plate I 3 positioned on the inside of the arm I of the frame member 5 and confined thereby between the frame 5 and the razor blade. Struck from the plate I3 of substantially greater plane dimensions than the slot H, are a pair of longitudinally extending outwardly curved spring fingers I4, one of which in the present embodiment is seen to extend outwardly into the slot ll of the attaching frame 5 while the other projects beyond one end thereof. This plate I3 is thus adjustable longitudinally of the attaching frame 5 and on being so treated moves against or away from the razor blade behind it because of the curved spring fingers I4.
A screw I5 threaded into the block I2 and plate l3 carries a Washer l6 that on tightening bears against the rear 1 of the frame 5 at the upper and lower edges of the slot II and thereby sets the adjustment of the spring clamping plate I3 whenever desired to produce the requisite clamping effect of the guard carrying frame 5 on the razor blade.
This adjustable spring clamping feature allows of controlling the tension of the guard plate against the blade as well as permitting the successful attaching of the device to razor blades of various thicknesses.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that a safety attachment for straight razors is provided that will fulfill all the necessary requirements of such a device but as ,many changes could be made in the above description and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention may be constructed within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matters contained in the said accompanying specification and drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitative or restrictive sense.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An attachment for an ordinary razor comprising a frame, a removable guard plate on one side thereof and a removable spring clamping means on the other and adjustable with respect to said frame.
2. A safety attachment for razors comprising a frame adapted to straddle the top of a blade, a vertically movable guard plate carried between the ends of said frame on one side thereof and an adjustable spring clamping member carried on the other side of said frame, slidable with respect thereto.
, 3. A safety attachment for straight razors comprising an inverted U frame adapted to straddle the top of the razor blade, outwardly doubled back lugs on the ends on one side of said frame, a vertically adjustable toothed guard plate disposed laterally against the exterior of said frame held by said doubled back ends and a longitudinally sliding spring clamping member carried in the other side of said frame.
4. A safety attachment for straight razors comprising an inverted U frame adapted to straddle the top of the razor blade, outwardly doubled back lugs on the ends on one side of said frame, a toothed guard plate held thereby, a slot in the other side of said frame, and a spring clamping member slidable between said razor and frame partly accommodated therein adapted to bear against the razor.
5. A safety attachment for straight razors comprising an inverted U frame adapted to straddle the top of the razor blade, outwardly doubled back lugs on the ends on one side of said frame, a toothed guard plate held thereby, a slot in the other side of said frame, a clamping member adapted to operate between said frame and razor and to bear laterally against the latter slidable in said slot and means to set said member in any desired adjustment.
6. A safety attachment for straight razors comprising an inverted U frame adapted to straddle the top of the razor blade, outwardly doubled back ends on one side of said frame, a toothed guard plate carried thereby, a slot in the other side of said frame, and a laterally movable clamping member slidable longitudinally in said slot.
7. A safety attachment for straight razors comprising an inverted U frame adapted to straddle the top of the razor blade, outwardly doubled back lugs on the ends on one side of said frame, a toothed guard plate carried thereby, an elongated longitudinal slot in the other side of said U frame, a sliding plate behind said slot, a block mounted on said sliding plate and adapted to travel in said slot, and means to adjust said block in said slot.
8. A safety attachment for straight razors comprising an inverted U frame adapted to straddle the top of the razor blade, outwardly doubled back lugs on the ends on one side of said frame, a toothed guard plate carried thereby, an elongated longitudinal slot in the other side of said U frame, a sliding plate behind said slot, spring fingers struck outwardly therefrom, a block mounted on said sliding plate and adapted to travel in said slot, a set screw threaded in said block and a washer on said set screw adapted to tighten against said U frame at the upper and lower margins of said slot.
