Claims.
The invention relates generally to illuminated charts, and primarily seeks to provide a novel form of chart for recording and displaying attendance at places of assemblage such as clubs,
5 churches, schools, lodges and the like.
In its more detailed nature the invention resides in the provision of a hollow box-like frame containing a source of light and a rear door through which access may be had to the interior of the frame, the front face of the frame coinprising a panel displaying a column of names, rows of sight apertures beside the respective names and corresponding to the allotted or possible number of attendance, and novel means whereby only selected apertures or groups of apertures may be made to display light indicating attendance of the particular individuals or similar recordings.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel record and display chart comprising an apertured face panel, an opaque backing panel having weakened and readily removable portions underlying and covering said apertures, and an intermediate sheet of transparent or translucent material, preferably distinctly colored, whereby selected weakened portions may be removed to cause light to be admitted through associated apertures and the light admitting covering there behind thus simulating a light indicative of an 30 attendance or like record.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, the invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, and then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure l is a face View of my improved chart.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail face View of a portion of the chart.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of a portion of the face panel, parts being broken away.
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross section taken on the line 4 4 on Figure 1.
In the drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures 5 50 designates an open rectangular frame which is closed at the rear by a cover plate or wall i3. In the back wall of the frame is provided a door l' through which access may be had into the interior of the chart frame.
The front of the frame is covered by a com- 1935, Serial No. 34,347
(Cl. ll0---133) posite panel suitably trimmed by molding il to display a head portion 9 which may be marked to indicate the parti-cular use to which the chart is put as indicated in Figure 1, a name column ill assuming that the chart is to be used as an attendance record as herein disclosed, and a main record and display body ii.
In the column l0 a plurality of grooved plates E2 are aihxed to the panel for the purpose oi removably receiving plates embodying the names of the individuals whose attendance it is desired to record and display.
The composite front panel comprises a iront sheet i3 of masonite or any other suitable sheet material, an opaque backing sheet iii, and an intermediate sheet I 5 of transparent or translucent material, preferably colored gelatin sheeting, crepe paper or the like. The front sheet i3, within the body portion i i thereof, is equipped with symmetrically disposed horizontal rows of sight apertures i6. If the chart is to be used to record and display weekly attendance throughout the period of a year 52 such apertures will be disposed beside each of the name plates in the column l0. When used in this manner the number of apertures uncovered in each row, and thereby emitting light, will indicate the number of timesl and on which Sundays the person attended class.
The opaque backing sheet l!! includes a weakened circular portion il underlying each 0f the apertures I6 which portions may be formed by punching through a part only of the area underlying the sight apertures, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings.
A light source I8 is mounted within the chart framing and it will be obvious that so long as the backing sheet I4 remains intact no light will be admitted through the intermediate sheet l5 and the apertures I6 which it underlies. It will be equally obvious, however, that when one or more of the weakened portions il of the backing sheet are removed, light from within the interior of the chart framing will be displayed through the intermediate sheet i5 and the respective aperture or apertures I6 thus exposed, and each display of light will record and indicate an attendance of the individual beside whose name the display occurs. This display of light simulates the lighting of a lamp to indicate each attendance and may take the form of a white light when an ordinary transparent intermediate sheet !5 is employed, or any desired color light depending upon theform and color of intermediate sheet employed. Access may be had to the interior of the chart through the door 1 for the purpose of tearing out the weakened portions I1.
It will be observed that the weakened portions Il are considerably larger than the apertures I6 which they underlie. By this means, when the weakened portions are torn out, the ragged edges I9 resulting from the tearing away cannot be seen through the apertures I6 and thus the clear and well defined circular light display desired is assured.
It will be obvious that my improved chart may be employed for recording and displaying various records other than the attendance record referred to and disclosed herein and this modification of the invention and the use of various forms and colors of intermediate sheets and temporary aperture covering areas is contemplated and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A record and display chart including a composite panel comprising an apertured sheet the apertures in which designate possible record units, a second sheet having weakened areas covering the front sheet apertures and removable to admit light through selected apertures to record and display record unit designations, and a third sheet of light admitting and modifying material covering the apertures and eiective upon removal of said weakened portions to modify light passing through said apertures.
2. A record and display chart including a cornposite panel comprising an apertured sheet the apertures in which designate possible record units, and a second sheet having weakened areas covering the front sheet apertures and removable to admit light through selected apertures to record and dispose record unit designations, said weakened portions being larger in area than the apertures whereby rough edges of the backing sheet occasioned by removal of the weakened portions will not show through the apertures.
3. A record and display chart including a composite panel comprising an apertured sheet the apertures in which designate possible record units, a second sheet having weakened areas covering the front sheet apertures and removable to admit light through selected apertures to record and display record unit designations and a third sheet of colored translucent material covering the apertures and eiective upon removal of said weakened portions to modify light passing through said apertures.
4. A record and display chart comprising a box-like frame; a source of light in the frame; a front closure panel in the frame including an apertured front sheet the apertures in which designate possible record units, a backing sheet having weakened areas underlying the apertures and removable to admit light through selected apertures to record and display record unit designations, and a transparent sheet disposed between said front and backing sheets and effective upon removal of said weakened portions to modily light passing through said apertures.
5. A record and display chart comprising a box-like frame; a source of light in the frame; a front closure panel in the frame including an apertured front sheet the apertures in which designate possible record units, a backing sheet having weakened areas underlying the apertures and removable to admit light through selected apertures to record and display record unit designations, and a colored translucent sheet disposed between said front and backing sheets and eiective upon removal of said weakened portions to modify light passing through said apertures, said weakened portions being larger in area than the apertures whereby rough edges of the backing sheet occasioned by removal of the weakened portions will not show through the apertures.
