Description

Patented Jan. 26, 1937 UNlTED STATES PRINTED TEXTILE FABRIC Alfred M. Schwarzschild, Berlin, Germany No Drawing. Application December 11, 1934, Serial No. 756,983. In Germany November 6 Claims.
It is well known in the printing industry that when printing fabrics either by relief or discharge printing or by other printing processes the print penetrates through to the back of the fabric. The printed pattern, of course, appears more or less washed out on the back of the fabric so that only one side of the fabric can be exposed. Attempts have indeed been made to remedy this disadvantage by making the fabric which is to be printed as thick as possible. Apart, however, from the waste of material caused thereby and the impossibility of making general use of heavy fabrics of this nature for all purposes, the disadvantage that the pattern penetrates through to the back of the fabric was not obviated by this means. Even if the printing be undertaken with great care and even if the fabric is woven so as to be double-sided, experiments which have been made by the inventor have proved that the pattern is nevertheless still clearly visible on the back of the fabric even if not to such a pronounced extent. In any case the back of the printed fabric cannot be used.
According to the present invention, a doublesided textile fabric, for example a woven or knitted fabric, of which one side consists of threads of different materialfrom that of the threads on the other side, is employed for printing. For example, the material or threads on one side of the fabric may consist of natural silk and on the other side of cotton. Again, one side of the fabric may consist of wool and the other side of artificial silk or threads of two different kinds of artificial silk, for example acetate silk and viscose silk, may be employed on opposite sides of the fabric. If one side of a fabric of this nature is printed on it is found that the printed pattern, even if heavily printed, does not penetrate through at all to the back of the fabric, which consists of threadsof a different material, so that the material of the back of the fabric can be dyed as desired or can be allowed to remain white. By this means there is obtained a fabric both sides of which can be used and of which one side exhibits a printed pattern while the other side, on the other hand,-may be of any desired shade, and either of a single color, or, if desired, of several colors, or it may exhibit a shot effect. Particularly pretty effects are obtained if the back of the fabric is dyed in the colour of the background of the printed pattern. Obviously, any kinds of patterns may also be applied to the side which is not printed on.
A fabric of this kind has not-previously been known, it is a novelty which has many uses, in
particular for fashionable garments and the like. Any penetration of the print to the back of the fabric which was hitherto thought to be unavoidable is'entirely excluded for the first time by means of the invention.
It is, of course, known that the different capabilities of different kinds of threads for absorbing different colors can be utilized for the production of colour effects. In such cases, however. only mixed fabrics were made use .of, for example fabrics of which the warp and weft were com-' posed of different kinds of threads. When a mixed fabric of this kind is dyed, the dye is taken up by one of the kinds of thread better than by the other. The present invention, on the other hand, is concerned with a "double-sided fabric one side of which is printed and the other side can be dyed as desired owing to the fact that the printed pattern is not visible on it.
The method in accordance with the invention is, of course, suitable also for bands or any other kind of textile products.
I claim:
1. The herein described method of producing a printed textile fabric having a printed pattern visible on only one side thereof, which method comprises producing a double-sided textile fabric of which one side consists of a thread material having by nature a different dyeing afllnity from the thread material which forms the other side of the fabric, and printing a pattern on one side of the said fabric with a dye having affinity for the thread material of the said side without affecting the reverse side of said material.
2. The herein described method of producing a printed textile fabric which method comprises producing a double sided textile fabric of which one side consists of a thread material having by nature a different dyeing aflinity from the thread material which forms the other side of the fabric, printing a pattern on one side of the said fabric with a dye having aflinity for the thread material of the said side without affecting the reverse side of said material and then printing a pattern on the other side of the fabric with a dye having affinity for the thread material of latter side without affecting the thread material of the first printed side.
3. A double-sided textile fabric of which the threads on the two sides consist of materials having diflerent natural dyeing affinities and having one side printed in 'a pattern with a dye having afflnity'for the threads of that side, the
threads of the other side being unaffected by the dye on the said printed side of the fabric.
4. A double-sided textile fabric of which the threads on the two sides consist of materials having difierent natural dyeing aflinities and having one side printed in a pattern with a dye having aflinity for the threads 01' that side, and the other side printed in a pattern with a different dve having amnity for the threads oi the latter side, penetration of the respective dyes from one side to the other being absent, due to the diflerent i0 aflinities of said two sides of the fabric.
