JOHN Gr. SOHERMERHORN, OF DLOOMING'ION, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.
Speoilienlion forming part of Leiters Patent No. 206,831, dalt-d August (i, 1879; application filed June 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JonN G. Sorrentina HORN, of Bloomington, in the county of Mc- Lean, and in the State of Illinois, have i11- vented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Vessels; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 is a plan View; Fig. 2, a side view, showing vessel partially closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing vessel ready for use. Fig. f1 is a perspective view of a vessel, showing a modification. of inserting the closing-lappet.
This invention relates to improvements' in the class of paper vessels for putting up ieecream; and it consists in a paper vessel, as a new article of manufacture, constructed from a single blank of paper, cut, folded, and secured, all as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawing, A represents the paper blank of water-proof material, from which the vessel is constructed, cut and scored in the form shown in Fig. 1, the portions I3 B' forming the front and rear sides of the vessel, and the portions (c a I) b forming thc other two double sides of the vessel. These portions are cut and scored on angular lines, so that when folded the vessel will be made increasing in size from bottom toward the top, as shown in Fig. 3. C represents the portion forming the bottom of the vessel with V- shaped lappets c c, which form strengtheningpieces for the bottom and side flaps or portions a a b b', said lappets c c folding up between the side flaps a b and a b. D D1 D2 represent the portions `of the blank forming the cover of the vessel, the portions D Dl being slitted or scored on the diagonal lines x x, so that they can be folded inward and covered by the portion D2, and between which and the portions D Dl the lappet d is tucked, which completely closes the mouth of the vessel.
In forming the vessel from the blank above described, the front side B is rst turned upward and the side portions a a turned or folded inward, after which the lappets c c are turned up and glued to the side iaps a a'. The rear side, D', of the vessel is then brought up and the side iiaps b b glued to the iiaps a a and lappets c c. The mouth or open cnd of the vessel is then closed by folding the portions D I)l inward or through or on the diagonal slitted or scored lines .r .1', after which thc portion D2 is folded over the portions D D, and between which and the portion Dz the lappet d is tucked, which completely and sccnrely closes the mouth of the vessel.
Instead of having the lappet d tucked, as above set forth, it may be inserted through a slit or opening formed in the top portion, D2, of the vessel, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The essential feature of my invention is the shape given the blank in cutting and scoring and folding the parts together, forming a very strong vessel, and at the same time of the dcsired shape for getting at the material contained therein.
I am aware of Patent No. 86,544 for a hairpin box, in which the blank forming the sides of the box has a similar configuration; also, Patent No. 83,812 for a rectangular mail sample-box, in which the blank forming the bottom has V-shaped lappets; and, finally, Iatent No. 201,707 for a knock-down box, showing a similar manner of closing the box; and such I do notdesire to claim, broadly, as my invention; but
I claim as my invention- The herein-described flaring ice-cream paper vessel, formed from the blank A, consisting of the portions D B', angular portions a a b b', bottom portions C, with V-shaped lappets c c, portion D2, with outside portions, D D1, slitted or scored on the diagonal lines x and the lappet d, the several portions folded and secured together in the manner specified.
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May, 1878.
JOHN G. SCHERMERHORN.
