Description

Jam- 5 1937- R. M. coLMAN CONVERTIBLE DAVENPORT Filed sept. 19, 1955 Patented Jan. 5, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination bed, davenport and table, and the principal object of the invention is to provide as conveniently convertible a household article of this nature as possible.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and wherein like reference characters indicate like parts:
Figure 1 is a broken front elevation of the article showing it in position as a table.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the article in position as a davenport, and showing in dotted lines its position as a table and also as a bed.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section through the outer circumferential edge of one of the end members illustrating the wearing shoe and track for the adjustable part of the device.
In the further explanation of the article it will be referred to as a convertible davenport.
In the drawing, the numerals l--I represent the opposite ends of the davenport, and these ends are slightly more than a semi-circle in form. In the preferred form I contemplate facing the circumferential edges of these ends with a metal hoop or strap indicated at 2. In each end, and communicating with the inner side thereof as by the arcuately shaped slot 3, is a runway 4 extending from a point slightly up from the bottom of the end at the back side thereof as at 5, and terminating at its opposite end as at 6. Within this runway is mounted a wearing shoe 'l to the uppermost end of which is mounted by being permanently pivotally attached thereto as at 8 the apex of the bracket 9 which is xed to the ends of the plate IU. This plate forms the back when the device is used as a davenport, and forms the table when the device is used as a table and seat, and also forms a support for the cushioned back which, when the device is used as a bed, is a portion thereof. At the opposite end of the wearing shoe 1 is an internally screw threaded hole for the selective installation of the bolt Il which is employed in the position shown in Figure 3 of the drawing when the device is being used as a davenport, or a davenport and table, but is removable when the pivotally mounted plate I is turned upside down and the device is being used as a bed; which position is shown in dotted lines as at I2. The dotted lines I3 indicate the position of the plate when the device is used as a seat and table.
It will be understood that when employed as a davenport the back member or rest formed by the plate l0 and its peculiar mounting may abut b the bottom of the slot l back of the seat, or the plate may have an extension on it so that it rests on the floor if desired, and still other immaterial modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have produced an exceedingly simple device having more or less pleasing appearance and one that will function admirably for any of the three offices intended.
It is obvious that the seat portion of the davenport, illustrated at i3', may be of any desired construction, though fixed to the ends I-l, and becomes a cooperative portion of the device in any of its adjusted positions. 20
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A convertible davenport comprising substantially semi-circular end portions having tracks therein, a seat fixed in the rearmost lower half of said ends and uniting same, a plate pivotally and slidably supported in said tracks and normally serving as a back for said seat, said plate movable along said tracks forwardly of and above said seat to serve as a table and also to a position in alignment with said seat in which position it cooperates with the seat to form a bed.
2. A convertible davenport comprising spaced end portions having tracks therein, a seat fixed intermediate of and uniting said end portions, a wearing shoe slidably supported in each track, and a plate the ends of which are pivotally attached to said shoes, said plate when said shoes are at one end of said tracks normally serving as a back for said seat, and said plate and shoes being movable along said tracks to the other end thereof forwardly of and above said seat in which position the plate serves as a table for said seat.
3. A convertible davenport comprising spaced end portions, a seat fixed intermediate of and uniting said end portions, curved tracks within said end portions, a plate pivotally and slidably supported in said tracks and normally serving as a back for said seat when at one end of said tracks, said plate movable along said tracks forwardly of and above said seat to serve as a table.
