FRED. A. NEIDER, OF AU JrUSTA, KENIICKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,600, dated July Ill), 1978; application filed June 29, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED. A. NEIDER, of Augusta, in the county of Bracken and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and valu' able Improvement in Frames for Holding Glass; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan View of my carriage-window as applied; and Fi 2 is a transverse vertical section through mm, Fig. 1.
The object of my invention is to furnish a cheap and eflicient window for carriages and the like; and the invention consists in a metal frame, in one piece, struck up in suitable dies, or otherwise formed with a rounded or ornamental shape, having from its outer surface or periphery projections which, being bent down at right angles, serve as a fastening to secure the frame and glass to the curtain. The frame is concavo-convex in form, and may be round, oval, or of other desired shape, and is of sheet metal.
The glass of my improved carriage-window is molded to suit the exact size of the frame, and is provided with an annular or oval rib upon one side, to correspond with the concave of the frame, and a similar projection upon the opposite to protect the ends of the securin g-nibs. The periphery of this molded-glass plate is provided with notches to correspond with the securing-nibs in size and location, and these notches serve to prevent movement of the glass in its bearings.
I have discovered in my experience in the art to which this invention belongs that glass cut from the sheet is liable to be broken or cracked in use, and also that the oval frame, when not filled with some supporting material, is liable to become marred or dented, or the space is liable to serve as a receptacle for dust or water. To avoid these and other deleterious effects, I provide upon one side of the glass the rib which corresponds with the concave of the frame, and fits therein, supports the said frame, and strengthens the glass.
To prevent the points of the securing-nibs from catching int-o passing garments or injuring or scratching the persons occupying or using the carriage, I provide an oval or annular projecing ridge upon the other side of the glass, at such a distance from the edge that the points of the securing-nibs will fold down outside of it, and it will serve as a guard therefrom.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the struck-up sheet-metal frame, of concavo-convex form, provided with nibs a upon its outer edge. B represents the molded glass, having projection b to correspond in size, form, and location with the concave portion of the frame A, into which it fits and operates. I) represents the guard to the nibpoints, and is molded upon the glass plate.
To securely hold the glass and frame together and prevent movement, notches b are formed in the edges of the glass, and these notches correspond in location to the nibs.
It is, of course, understood that the curtain is secured between the glass and the frame.
The plain space in the glass furnishes a desirable place for a design, monogram, or the like, and for such use my invention seems especially designed for childrens carriages.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The frame A, of concavo-convex form, having securing-nibs a, combined with a sup port of non-flexible material, 6, which fits closely into the concave and supports the frame, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the frame A a with the glass B, having supporting and strengthening flange I), operatingin the concave of the frame A, as specified.
3. The frame A, having securing-nibs a, in combination with the glass 13 I), having notches 1) corresponding to the nibs a, in which said nibs operate, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the frame A, having nibs a, with the glass B, with projections b, notches b, and projecting guard b, as specitied, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED. A. NEIDER.
Witnesses JoHN F. IELMKMAR, EUGENE W. JonXsoN.
