LIPSTICK HOLDER Filed Sept. 20, 1934 INVENJ'OR a, .wfme@ ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 15, 12936 LIPSTICK HOLDER August Mitchell, New
York, N. Y., assignor to A Scovlll Manufacturing Company, Waterbury, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Application September 20, 1934, Serial No. '144,754
8 Claims.
This invention relates to lipstick holders.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide an improved lipstick holder that is simple in construction and one that can be produced at relatively low cost.
With these general objects and others in view, the invention consists in the features; combinations, details of construction and arrangements of parts which will ilrst be described in connection with. the accompanying drawing and then more particularly pointed out.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a lipstick holder constructed in accordance withthe. pres- Aent invention, showing the holder closed;
Fig. 2 is a iront view, with parts broken away, showing the holder .open and the lipstick advanced for use;
Fig. 3 is asimilar view with part of the casing and other parts removed and parts broken away;
Fig. 4 is a rear view with another part ofthe casing and other parts removed; Fig. 5 isa view similar to Fig. 3, showing the 2 lipstick withdrawn and the holder closed;
Fig. 6 is a sectional View taken on the line 6-6 orFig. 3 butl showing all the casing and other parts in place;
30 Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the broken line l--l of Fig. '3 but showing the removed parts in place; and
Fig. 8 is a top end view closed.
35 Referring to the drawing, there is provided a two-part casing or housing divided longitudinally and capacitated to be secured together by tne mere act extraneous fastening devices or operations. In the, embodiment here shown as an example, the housing or casing comprises an open-faced box'- like section, which may be termed the rear section, having a rear wall H, side walls l2, i3, bottom it and curved top l5. The other part 45 of the housing, which may be termed the front section, is an oppositely disposed open-faced boxlike section having a front wall I6, side walls Il, i8, and bottomv liand curved top 20. The
showing the holder side walls and bottom of the second housing 50 section have their edge portions offset to telescope over the sides and bottom of the iirst housing section (Figs. 1 and 8).
The curved tops of the two housing sections are cut away to give the assembled housing a. 55 rectangular discharge opening 2| (Figs. 1 and 8),
of assembly without' the need of In order to secure the two housing sections together by the mere act of assembly, one of the housing sections, forl example the front section, has a plurality of locking nibs 22 struck in from the metal of each of the overlapping 5 side walls. As appears more clearly in Fig.- 1, the upper and lower nibs are arranged in reversely faced pairs, the locking shoulders 23 facing sideways. Intermediate the ends is a single nib with its shoulder faced downward. 10 These nibs are received by suitable locking holes cut in the side walls of the other housing section. It will be understood that the nibs shown in Fig. 1 are duplicated on the ,other side. After the internal parts, later described, have 15 been inserted, the casing sections are brought together with the edges of the iront section overlapping the edges of the rear section. As this is done, nlbs 22 snap into the complementary locking holes and the casing parts are automati- 20 cally secured together bythe act of assembly.
Slidablein the housing is a carrier cup 25 for a lipstick ,28. The carrier is actuated, in the embodiment here shown as an example, by al thumb-piece 2l extending through a slot 28 25 in the front wall of the housing. This thumbpiece is formed as a fold in a lmetal piece 29 having twoilngers or prongs 30 which take into holes 3! in the carrier cup. The outside edge of the thumb-piece is preferably knurled to'pro- 30 vide a proper gripping surface. The construction described provides an inexpensive thumbpiece that is connected to the carrierv by the mere act of assembly. As will be apparent from Fig. 7, once the casing sections are assembled,
this actuating element is retained in place by the casing, the slot 23 being wide enough to pass the thumb-piece 2l only.
. The invention in its entirety comprises a ilexible strip moving with the carrier and ar- 40 ranged to cover the discharge opening when the lipstick is withdrawn and to expose the opening upon advance of the carrier, to permit the lipstick to be moved out to a position for use. As here shown as an example, one en d of a ilexible strip 33 carries a pin or dowel 34 which takes into a suitable hole' in the carrier cup, thus connecting the parts by the mere act of assembly. As will be apparent from Fig. 5, once the casing is assembled, this dowel 34 is held in place by the 50 Wall of the casing. As appears more clearly in Figs. 3 and 6, the pin 34 serves an additional function in that it acts as a stop for the lipstick hen the holder is loaded.
When the lipstick is withdrawn into the holder, the free end of strip 33 covers the discharge opening and so serves as an end closure for the' housing. As the thumb-piece is moved up in its slot to advance the lipstick, the free end of the strip is withdrawn to expose or open the discharge orifice by the time the tip of the lipstick reaches the same. Upon reverse movement of the thumb-piece, the lipstick is withdrawn and the free end of the strip again moves into a position covering the discharge opening.
There is provided guide means for the lipstick carrier and the flexible strip. As here shown as an example, seated fiat against the inside rear face of the rear housing member is a plate 35 having a portion offset to f orm a panel 36 with rounded upper and lower ends. Similarly seated in the front housing member is a plate 31 having a portion offset to form a similar panel 38. In the bottom of the housing is an arcuate guide piece 39 positioned and supported by legs 40. sides and top between the edges of panels 36, 33, and the adjacent walls of the housing and at the bottom between the lower curved edges of the panels and guide piece 39.
The carrier cup 25 is confined and guided between the opposing faces of the panels 36, 38,
and is prevented from wabbling by a lug 42 struck up from the rear of the cup and sliding in a slot 43 formed in panel 36 of plate 35.
Panel 38 of plate 31 has two slots 44 to accommodate the fingers 30 of the actuating element.
As these slots 44 straddle slot 28 in the casing,
the latter is backed by plate 31 (Fig. 2). That is, plate 31 closes slot 28 and prevents or tends to prevent the entrance of dust and dirt.
The invention in its entirety includes means for tending to retain the carrier in withdrawn position against accidental dislodgment. In the embodiment here shown as an example, panel 36 has two spring nibs or tongues 45 which bear against the carrier cup in withdrawn position to hold the same firmly in such position except when advanced by the thumb-piece.
Plates 35 and 31 are secured in place by the mere act of assembly without the necessity for extraneous fastening. Edgewise movement of the plates is prevented by their fit within the respective casing sections and right line movement is prevented by the interposition of the lipstick carrier which serves in the nature of a spacer (Fig. 6). The guide piece 38 is similarly secured in place without extraneous fastening. It is prevented from endwise movement by its fit between the walls of the casing (Figs. 3 and 5), and from edgewise movement by its fit between plates 35, 31 (Fig. 6).
It will be understood that the various parts may be assembled in the two casing sections as may be found convenient, the assembly of these two sections being the final step that secures all the parts.
With the construction described, not only are all the parts secured in position by the mere act of assembly, but the casing sections, the plates, the actuator and the guiding insert may be formed from stampings, thus making for economy of production.
