This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination chair and high chair.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a combination chair and high chair wherein the seat or bottom of an ordinary chair is equipped with a high chair attachment with the latter occupying a position beneath the chair bottom or seat when out of use with the device in use as an ordinary chair.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combination chair and high chair of the foregoing character wherein the seat or bottom of an ordinary chair carries a high chair attachment at its underside with the seat or bottom of the chair hinged to the chair frame and adapted to be moved to an upright position to place the high chair attachment in service with the chair seat or bottom constituting a back for the high chair attachment with means for holding the high chair attachment in service position.

With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.

Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the combined chair and high chair with the latter in its lowered inoperative position;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the combination chair and high chair constructed in accordance with the present invention, with the high chair attachment in service position;

Figure 3 is a front elevational view with the high chair attachment raised into service position;

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3;

Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3, showing the latch plate carried by the side rails of the chair; and

Figure 6 is a perspective view of one of the latches.

The combination chair and high chair comprise an ordinary chair construction modified to carry the high chair attachment and includes cor- 50 ner legs H], a back II and a chair bottom having fixed side rails l2 with the seat 13 hingedly mounted at its rear end adjacent the lower end of the back H, as at I4. The legs of the chair are connected by brace bars [5 and the upper 55 front brace bar l5a is positioned a distance below the seat frame l2 to permit pivotal swinging movement of the high chair attachment. v

The high chair attachment is carried by the lower side of the chair seat I3 and when out of service with the chair seat in its lowered posi- 5 tion as shown in Figure l, occupies the area beneath the chair seat within the frame structure of the chair. The seat bottom I3 forms the back of the high chair which further comprises a seat board [6 and side frame arms I'I. Corner legs 10 E8 depend from the forward edge of the seat board It and carry a foot rest l9 at their lower ends. A tray 20 for the high chair attachment is carried by side arms 2| that are hingedly mounted as at 22 to the outer sides of the chair back H at a 15 point substantially in horizontal alignment with the upper edges of the side frame arms I! when the high chair attachment is in service position. The tray 20 is carried by the outer ends of the arms 2| with the inner edge of the tray disposed 20 a sufficient distance from the arm pivots 22 to permit the tray to swing clear of the chair back I I when moved to a position out of service.

To retain the high chair attachment in service position as shown in Figures 3 and 4, there is 25 provided a pair of bracket plates respectively slidably and pivotally mounted upon the inner faces of opposite sides of the seat frame l2 and these bracket plates are shown more clearly in Figures 4 to 6. Each bracket plate comprises 30 a metal strip 23 for fiat engagement with the seat frame and longitudinally slotted as at 24 for the passage of a headed rivet or retaining element 25, the bracket plate being retained in its slidably adjusted position by means of the 35 thumb screw device 26 associated with the seat frame and passing through the plate slot 24 as clearly shown in Figure 4. The forward side of the strip 23 carries a laterally directed supporting plate 21 that lies in the plane of the upper 40 side of the seat frame [2 to provide a support for the foot rest IQ of the high chair attachment. With the high chair attachment in the position shown in Figure 1, the same is confined within the area beneath the chair seat 13 and 45 the chair is used in the ordinary manner by an adult. When it is desired to convert the chair into a high chair, the chair seat I3 is raised on its hinge mounting M to the position shown in Figure 4 and at which time the bracket plates comprising the strips 23 that are normally suspended on the rivets 25 with the thumb screws 26 removed, are shifted to a horizontal position and projected forwardly of the chair to position the supporting plates 21 beneath the foot rest W V s IQ of the high chair attachment and at which time the thumb screws 26 are placed in position and tightened to hold the bracket plates against movement.

From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:-

1. In a device of the class described, a chair construction including a seat hingedly mounted to the frame of the chair, a high chair attachment carried by the bottom face of the chair seat and including a foot rest movable therewith, with the chair seat constituting the back of the high chair and means carried by the chair for engagement with the high chair for holding the high chair in raised service position, including slidably and pivotally mounted bracket plates carried by opposite sides of the chair adapted to be engaged by opposite ends of the foot rest.

In a device of the class described, a chair construction including a seat hingedly mounted to the frame of the chair, and a high chair attachment carried by the bottom face of the chair seat, the high chair including a foot rest and bracket plates slidably and pivotally mounted on the chair and including angularly directed supports with which opposite ends of the foot rest are e'ngageable.

In a device of the class described, a chair construction including a seat hingedly mounted to the frame of the chair, and a high chair attachment carried by the bottom face of the chair seat, the high chair including a foot rest and. bracket plates slidably and pivotally mounted on the chair and including supporting plates projecting laterally of the upper edge of the bracket plates with which opposite ends of the foot rest are engageable, a pin and slot connection between the bracket plates and chair and means for holding the bracket plates in horizontal supporting positions against movement.
