MATTHFAV 1 l- OUMMINGS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN M. SHELDON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURTAIN-CORD TIGHTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,30l, dated July 23, 1878; application liled May 18, 1878.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW L. GUM- MINGS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Imprm'ements in Shade-Roller-Cord Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my invention.- Figs. 2 and 3 are transverse vertical sections, showing the unlocked and locked positions of the same. Fl 4 and 5 are detail perspectivcs.
My invention has for its object to provide a shade or curtain cord holder the parts of which may all be cast, dispensing with the employment of adjusting-screws, andyet securin g more effectual and certain means of adjustment than screws usually afford.
My invention consists of a bracket or keeper formed with a longitudinal slot and rack, a slide which moves in said slot, and is formed with a knob or button for receiving the cord, and a ring which encircles said slide and bracket, fitting in a notch in the former, and engaging with said rack when holding the slide in its adjusted position.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A designates a bracket or keeper, having ears a a, formed with openings a, for the passage of screws or nails, by which the device is secured to a window-frame. Said bracket has a longitudinal slot, a and a rack composed of the teeth or cogs a 13 is a slide, which fits in the slot a having a knob or button, 1), around the shank of which the cord to beheld passes,
and a notch, I1, for the reception of an encir. cling ring, I). Said ring D is of the peculiar shape shown, having an offset, (1, by means of which it clears the teeth of the rack a when turned to occupy the position shown in Fig.2. It is also thickened or enlarged at (1 so as to fill the space between said teeth when resting between two of them, and has an internal projection, (1 on its under or inner side, to limit its rotation around the keeper A. Said projection d is of such length that the ring D may be revolved from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 2, to clear the teeth a, and vice versa, and no further.
The operation is simple and obvious. The parts being in the position and relation shown, the slide is immovable longitudinally on the keeper. To adjust the slide in order to tighten or to loosen the cord of the shade or curtain, the ring is turned until it occupies the position shown in Fig.2. The ring and slide may now be freely moved lengthwise on the keeper until the desired adjustment is obtained, the ring being then rotated to the locked position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- A shade or curtain cord holder composed of a notched and slotted keeper, A, slide B, and notched and encircling ringD, adjustable upon the keeper by a partial rotation and sliding of said ring, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I elaim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of April, 1878.
MATTHEW L. CUMMINGS.
