IMPROVEMENT IN GUN-SIGHTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,164, dated July 23, 1878; application filed April 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILOM P. (heroes, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Changeable Gun-Sights, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in Which Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a detached View of several of the parts.
In the drawing, A represents a gun-barrel. B is the base of the sight set in a dovetail slot in top side of the barrel. 0 is an arched hood permanently attached to the said base B and covering the sights. D is a three-sided block having journals fitted in the side posts of the base B, and is provided with a thumbpiece, E, by means of which the said block may be turned.
Beneath the said block D, and between the posts of the base B, is a spring, F, having a slot in the middle for the sight-projections on the block to pass through when it is revolved,
the said spring lying along the top of the barrel A.
Upon the angles of the said block D are made the sight-projections, one of which has a small knob for a center to the hood and forming a globe-sight. One face of the block is colored white and another black, the object of which is to adapt the sight to various conditionsas, for instance, in the woods, where it is dark or dull, the white face may be turned up, and by contrast can be plainly seen; also, in case of clear open country and with snow on the ground, the black face being turned up, the sight is plainly visible by contrast.
Having described my invention, I claim-- The block D, having the diiferent-colored faces, sight-projections, and thuinbpiece E, in combination with the base B, hood 0, and spring F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
P. P. OARNES.
