This is a division of my co-pending application No. 752,816.
Double collars of any desired suitable material,
which are provided on the interior of the neckband with a chamfer or depression, which renders it possible to freely draw or slide the necktie be tween the two parts of the collar in the longitudinal direction, are already known.
' The present invention relates to an apparatus for shaping double collars of this kind, and more particularly to an apparatus for producing the hollow chamfer or depression in the inner wall of soft, semi-stiff and stiff double collars of the kind described and claimed in my aforesaid copending Application No. 752,816. The device according to the invention is adapted for use in collar factories and also in laundering and ironing installations.
The novel apparatus or machine for rendering it possible to produce the depression in the neckband of the collar in a simple and reliable manner consists essentially of a stationary cylindrical body around which the collar to be treated is placed and an adjacent stop against which the outer top edge or crease of the collar rests during the operation of making the chamfer or depression. At the point at which the hollow chamfer or depression is to be pressed in the cylindrical body is provided with a groove. The cylindrical body is provided at one part with a slot into which one of the collar ends containing a stud hole is inserted for the purpose of being clamped. A centrically mounted crank is provided with a member projecting between the neckband and the outer portion of the double collar and carrying a cam or presser member adapted to be pressed rigidly against the inner wall of the neckband, so as to press a portion of the latter into the recess of the cylindrical body. By simply turning the crank the cam or presser is carried around the neckband and produces the required hollow chamfer or depression. Means are provided for relaxing the pressure upon the cam or presser by the aid of a pedal lever or the like,
and means are also provided for releasing the clamping device, for example by means of a hand manipulating member, in order to be able to take the finished collar out oi the apparatus. The manipulation of the novel apparatus according to the invention is extremely simple and consists essentially in inserting the collar into the apparatus, whereby the end of the collar is automatically clamped to the cylindrical body, then turning a hand crank to produce the hollow chamfer or depression and finally releasing the device and removing the collar from the apparatus. The apparatus thus renders possible practically continuous operation without special manipulations. The action of the apparatus is very smooth and the apparatus renders it possible to deal with a large quantity of work per hour whilst treating the material of the collar in the most delicate manner possible. The protection of the collar during the pressing in of the hollow chamfer or depression is ensured owing to the fact that the apparatus does not in supporting the collar engage with the parts thereof which are mostly subjected to wear and tear such as,
for instance, the crease edge of the collar, but acts only on those portions of the collar which are not subjected to wear in the ordinary way. 'The apparatus is therefore suitable for use for collars which have been worn and are already frayed at the crease edge, the said edge not being liable to be ripped or torn by the apparatus.
A preferred constructional form of an apparatus according to the invention for the production of the hollow chamfer or depression on double collars is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:

The support I may be either cylindrical or slightly conical and may be made of any desired suitable material, for example metal, artificial resin, rubber, earthenware, glass or porcelain. In the construction shown according to Figs. 1 to 6, the support 'lis detachably mounted upon a boss shaped portion of the casing 8. The casing is provided below the support 1 with a horizontal flange 9 upon which the crease edge of the inverted collar rests. The flange 9 is somewhat extended outwardly as shown at l0 and the extended portion of the flange is slightly bevelled. If the inner Wall of the neck band is to be formed with a single hollow chamfer or depression, the support I is formed with a corresponding single groove II. If several hollow chamfers are to be formed side by side, the support I is formed. with several corresponding grooves of small vertical dimensions. The groove II of the cylindrical support I is substantially parallel to the flange 9, but it may, if required for some particular collar shapes, be inclined or undulating. The cross section of the groove II depends upon the shape of the depression to be produced in the neck band. It may be pointed out that the flange 9 need not be plane and horizontal, but may be inclined and generally conform to the shape of the crease edge of the collar. As above mentioned, the support proper I is detachably mounted in the casing 8. In order to fit various shapes of collars, grooved supports of various shapes can be used, and moreover, provision may be made to fix the ring I at various altitudes relatively to the flange. The casing 8 is fixed upon a table 2|.
The cylindrical support I is preferably made of larger diameter than the collar so that even when a collar of maximum size is placed around the support I, a portion I4 of the support will remain uncovered by the collar, as shown in Fig. 2, said portion being plain, that is, not provided with a groove and about one fourth or one fifth of the total periphery of the support I. This portion I4 serves for receiving a pressing member or cam I2 at the commencement and after the completion of the pressing operation.
At the end of the portion I4, the support 1 and the casing 8 are provided with a slot I5 into which one end of the collar containing a stud hole is inserted. Just behind the slot I5 is provided a clamping pawl I6 which under the action of a spring 36 automatically grips the inserted collar end. The clamping pawl I6 is so shaped as not to impede the insertion of the collar end into the slot I5. The pawl I6 holds the collar end either by mere friction, or by means of a sharp edge. If desired the gripping surface of the pawl may be knurled or serrated in order to increase the gripping action.
It will be understood that instead of a gripping pawl any other suitable gripping device may be used. In the construction shown the gripping pawl I6 is adjustable relatively to the insertion slot I5, by being mounted upon a ring I8 which is angularly adjustable upon a cylindrical portion I9 of the casing 8 and adapted to be clamped in any adjusted position by means of a setscrew.
For removing the collar from the apparatus, the pawl I6 is rotated against the action of the spring 36, the shaft I'I carrying the pawl I3 being for this purpose downwardly extended as shown in Fig. 6 and provided with an elbow lever 20 adapted. to be moved either by hand or by foot. Arranging the gripping pawl I6 within the casing and in rear of the insertion slot I5 has the advantage that the pawl does not interfere with the manipulation of the collar and the parts serving for forming the depression.
The forming of the hollow chamfer or depression in the inner wall of the neck band is effected by means of a rotatable pressing member I2, which is rotated by means of a crank I3 about the centre of the casing. The presser member I2 00- operates with the groove in the support I and it may, if required, perform in addition to the rotary movement also an axial or longitudinal movement. A hollow shaft 20 carrying the crank I3 is rotatably mounted in the cylindrical portion IQ of the casing, the whole casing being, in the construction shown, made in one piece. If preferred the cylindrical portion I9 might be made separate and might be connected with the outer portion of the casing by any suitable means.
It is essential that the presser member I2 be carried round the groove I I with a certain pressure in order to produce in the inner wall of the neckband a permanent hollow chamfer or depression. In order that the material of the collar, for instance, a linen collar, be not unduly strained, the pressure should be a resilient one. In the construction shown, the pressure is produced by means of an elbow lever 22 which is mounted within the hollow crank I3. For accurately adjusting the elbow lever 22 the lever is mounted in eyes 24 carried Within the crank and the pressure is limited by means of a set screw 25. The elbow lever is formed at its inner end with a fork 26 which engages the groove 21 of a vertical rod 28. The latter is centrically mounted within a fixed guide ring 29 and a lower guide ring 30 of the hollow shaft 20 and is longitudinally slidable therein. The ring 29 is axially slidable in the shaft 29. Between the ring 29 and the fixed ring 30 is mounted a helical spring 3| which through the ring 29 acts upon the forked end 26 of the elbow lever 22 and tends to turn an arm 32 carrying the presser member I2, so as to force the presser member into the groove. The arm 32 carrying the presser member is screwed to the vertical arm 23 of the elbow lever. Under the table 2I is provided a bracket 33 on which is turnably mounted a lever 34 connected to the I rod 28. This lever 34 may be depressed for instance by the operators foot, and serves for releasing or reducing the pressure of the spring 3| and consequently the pressure exerted by the presser member I2. It is necessary to release the pressure of the presser member temporarily, for instance, if the collar treated is slightly worn and jamming should occur during the carrying round of the presser member.
As there is only a small interspace between the two portions of a double collar, the holder 32 of the presser member should be curved as shown in Fig. 5. The cross section of the presser member I2 corresponds to the shape of the hollow chamfer to be produced and the presser member is so shaped as to taper forwardly and radially, the pointed end of the presser member being in front, that is, in the direction of the rotation of the crank I3. By this construction of the presser member it is attained that the material of the collar is gradually pressed into the groove II so that the material is not unduly strained. In order to avoid the formation of creases during the pressing in of the chamfer, the groove 5 may be provided with a resilient rubber lining 35. If preferred, the whole support may be made of resilient material.
Instead of using a solid wedge shape-d presser member i2 one or more pressing rollers or balls may be used and in that case the rollers or balls may be of different diameters so that the small roller acts first and the larger rollers act successively one after the other pressing the material into the groove. In this construction, a suitable roller or ball cage is used which may be fixed to or integral with the holder.
Fig. 7 shows a modification of the apparatus which is particularly suitable in cases in which the support 31 and the flange 38 holding the collar are made of special material. The casing is,
is this construction, provided with a bell-shaped portion39 made of metal and screwed into a central cylindrical bearing portion 4|], the latter being fixed in the table 4 I.
Fig. 8 shows the provision of an additional tensioning belt 42. The belt is fixed at one end to a pin 43 and serves for additionally positioning and holding the collar 44 relatively to a cylindrical support 31. The belt is placed around the collar after the latter has been fixed in the slot of the casing in the manner previously described. The belt is tensioned either by hand or by means of a lever or any suitable means by pulling the belt in the direction of the arrow 45. The belt 42 bears upon the outer collar portion 46 and it serves not only for maintaining the collar in position, but for simultaneously shaping the outer wall of the collar. For this purpose the back of the holder 48 of the presser member is shaped convex to conform with the convex form of the outer collar portion 46. The belt 42 is flexible so that during the passage of the holder 48 of the presser member the wall 46 of the collar will bear at all points against the inner wall of the belt. The inner Wall of the belt 42 is preferably provided with a resilient liner. The shape of the collar and the outer belt are clearly shown in Fig. '7 in cross section.
The described apparatus for producing a hollow chamfer or depression in the inner wall of the neck band of a double collar may be modified and varied in various details without departing from the scope of the invention. Instead of operating the presser by hand and by means of a crank, an electric or other motor may be used.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support provided with an annular groove; a presser member adapted to cooperate with said groove; means for rotating said presser member around said groove; and means for fixing one end of the collar in said support.

Apparatus for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support provided with an annular groove; a presser member adapted to co-operate with said groove; means for rotating said presser member around said groove; and means for fixing one end of the collar in said support, said fixing means compris-.
ing a slotted portion in said support adapted to receive the collar end; and a spring actuated gripping pawl.
3. Apparatus for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support provided with an annular groove; a presser member adapted to co-operate with said groove;
means for rotating said presser member around said groove; and means for fixing one end of the collar in said support, said fixing means comprising a slotted portion in said support adapted to receive the collar end; and a spring actuated gripping pawl, said spring actuated gripping pawl being adjustable.
4. Apparatus for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support having upon the major portion of its periphery a groove; a flange adjacent to said support to hold the collar in the vertical direction; a presser member adapted to co-operate with the groove in said cylindrical support, said presser member resting in its idle position upon the plain portion of the cylindrical support; means for rotating said presser member relatively to said cylindrical support; and means for clamping one end of the collar to said cylindrical support, substantially as described.

Apparatus for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support having upon the major portion of its periphery a groove; a flange adjacent to said support to hold the collar in the vertical direction; a presser member adapted to co-operate with the groove in said cylindrical support, said presser member resting in its idle position upon the plain portion of the cylindrical support; means for rotating said presser member relatively to said cylindrical support; means for clamping one end of the collar to said cylindrical support; and means for releasing said collar gripping means.

A machine for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical collar support adapted to support the neck band of the collar during the shaping operation and provided with a peripheral groove; a flange adjacent to said cylindrical support adapted to hold the crease edge of the collar during the shaping operation; and a presser member adapted to cooperate with said groove; means for rotating said presser member relatively to said groove, said presser member being wedge-shaped and tapering in the direction of rotation, substantially as described.

A machine for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical peripherally-grooved support adapted to support the neck band of the collar; means for supporting the crease edge of the collar; a presser member adapted to co-operate with the peripheral groove of said cylindrical support; means for rotating said presser member relatively to said groove; spring means for resiliently pressing said presser member into said groove; and means for releasing said spring pressure, substantially as described.
8. A machine for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support provided with a peripheral groove and adapted to hold the neck band of the collar; the material of the support around said groove being resilient; means for holding the collar vertically; a presser member adapted to co-operate with said groove in shaping the neck band of the collar; means for rotating the said presser member; spring means for resiliently pressing said presser member into said groove; means for adjusting the pressure on said spring means; and means for releasing said spring means, substantially as described.
9. A machine for shaping stiff double collars comprising in combination: a cylindrical support having a peripheral groove and adapted to support the neck band of the collar; a flange adapted to support the crease edge of the collar; a presser member adapted to co-operate with said groove in said cylindrical support; means for rotating said presser member; a transversely flexible belt adapted to be applied to the outer face of the collar, said presser member being formed with a convex portion adapted to press the outer portion of the collar against said belt, substantially as described.
