The present invention relates to door holders. As distinguished from the usual door holder, the present invention relates to a type of holder which swings from a pivoted position and is operative in the same direction at different places for releasing the holder and also for securing it in place.
The invention applies in particular to a door which comes up against a door frame and more particularly to a door in which there is a tendency for the door to swing from an open to a closed position. Doors of this type are those which naturally swing closed by gravity or in which some particular means are used, as for instance, a door check or a spring to close the door after it is opened. The holder of the present invention in these cases is applied to that face of the door which is foremost as the door swings to a closed position. The holder of the present invention will not only prevent the door from chattering when it is closed, but will also hold the door open in any desired position. There is also provided in the present invention means for controlling the holding element from either side of the door itself. This is an important feature in the present invention when it is desired to be able to control or operate the door holder from either side of the door.
The invention has other features which will appear more clearly from consideration of the description given below in connection with the drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the invention as applied to the lower part of a door showing a portion of the door in section. Figure 2 shows a view looking at the door from right of Figure 1. Figure 3 shows a perspective looking from the left of Figure 1, and Figure 4 shows another perspective looking from the right of Figure 1.
In Figure 1 the lower part of the door is indicated at I through which there is made a circular hole 2 which is the only cutting necessary in the door itself to allow the holder to be attached to it. The holder is mounted on a base plate 3 which has extending therefrom a pair of bearing plates 4 and 5, in which there is pivoted the pins or shafts 6 and I. The pin 6 pivots or carries the holding element 8 which is composed of a hub 9 surrounding the pivot 6, an arm I0 extending downwardly from the hub, a foot pedal I I projecting outwardly from the arm I 0, and a floor engagement member I2 at the bottom of which may be fitted a rubber cap I3 or some suitable means to offer friction with the floor. The holding element 8, in addition is pro vided with an upwardly extending arm I4 which is pivoted at its end to the bell crank lever I5 in the pivot IS. The bell crank lever I5 is formed with two fork elements through which the shaft or pivot I'I passes. The bell crank lever I 5 is also pivoted to the shaft or pin I which passes through a hole in the lever and is supported in the bearing plates 4 and 5 previously described. The top of the lever I5 is provided with a foot rest I8 which is pressed by the foot to raise the bearing plate I3 bearing against the floor. By lowering the foot pedal I8, the top end of the arm I 4 is forced inwardly against the door and the contact element I3 with the floor thereby swings upward with the pivot or pin 5 as a center There is also provided in the hub 9 a threaded portion 20 in which the rod or bar 2| is threaded. This bar 2| extends through the opening 2 in the door and is shaped at the other end in the form of a pedal 22 which when pressed also raises the contact piece I3. The rod 2| may be threaded over a considerable portion and may be cut in such lengths to accommodate the thickness of the door.
In order to lower the contact piece I3 from the side of the door at which the pedal 22 is placed, there is provided a pivoted lever 23 which is pivoted in the plate 24 fastened by screws 25 to the outside of the door. This pivot is indicated in Figure 2 by the line 26. The lever 23 is forked at the end 21, the fork surrounding the shaft 2I as indicated in Figure 2. At the opposite end of the lever 23 there is provided a pedal 28 permanently attached to the lever and operating in a slot 29 in the plate 24. When the lever 22 is pressed down, the pedal 23 is raised upward and therefore the holding member is in such a position that it may be lowered when the pedal 28 is pressed. In order to lower the contact element I3 from the left side of the door as shown in Figure 1, the foot may be pressed on the foot rest II, in which case the lever 22 on the other side of the door, is raised, and therefore in a position so that the member I3 may be released. If the element 28 is omitted and the lever 23 omitted, then the holding member may be released from the right side of the door by raising as well as lowering the lever 22. If elements No. 2| and No. 22 are omitted the step may be operable only from the left side of the door as shown in Figure l, in which case the step will be pressed down by pressing on the pedal or step I I and raised by pressing down on the lever I8.
Having now described our invention. we claim:
1. A door holder having in combination, a floor engaging member, and individual means on each side of the door one set of said means adapted to be forced downward for rendering the member effective and the other for rendering the member inefiective.
2.'A door holder having in combination a pivoted floor engaging member, and individual means on each side of the door adapted to be forced downward for actuating the member in the same direction about its pivot.
3. A door holder having in combination a pivoted floor engaging member, the floor engaging member having twoarms one of which extends through the door, and means on opposite sides of the door connected with the respective arms for actuating the floor engaging member.
4. A door holder having in combination a pivoted floor engaging member having an arm and a pivoted member connected on one side of the pivot with the arm, the pivoted members having pedals on the non-connected sides of-the pivots.
5. A door holder having in combination a pivoted floor engaging member having an arm extending through the door, and a pivoted memher having on one side of the pivot a'reeess in which the arm is received, the pivoted members having pedals on the non-connected sides of the pivots.
6. A door hold-er having in combination a pivoted floor engaging member having two arms one of which extends through the door, a pivoted member connected on one side of the pivot with the extending arm, the pivoted members having pedals on the non-connected sides of the pivot arms for actuating the said other arm, and the floor engaging member having a projecting member adapted to be engaged by the foot to actuate the floor engaging member.
