1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in guides for platen presses wherein a hollow clamp is provided with a shouldered lip for engaging one edge of a slit in thepaper platen blanket of said press for aligning said guide with the job, and also with a pivotally mounted guide in said clamp which operates in conjunction with means in turn actuated by normal operation of the press for moving said pivotally mounted guide to engageone edge of a sheet upon the platen and moving the same to a predetermined position upon said platen in order to insure perfect registration of successive sheets fed to said platen.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved guide for automatically moving a sheet upon the platen of a press to a predetermined position before said sheet is moved into contact with the type of said press.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a simple, compact automatic sheetregistering guide for platen presses which may be easily aligned or positioned to the job, which may be economically, produced and operated and having a maximum efficiency.
Another object is to provide an improved and simplified aligning or registering guide for registering or moving successive sheets to the same predetermined position upon the platen of a press.
A further object is to provide a new and improved guide of the character set forth which may be easily and effectively secured to any position upon the blanket of a platen press.
I accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawing forming a part of the present application, and in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the platen of a press just prior to its contact with the type of said press;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig.1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the guide with the upper portion thereof removed in order to disclose the mechanism thereof;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectionalview of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the clamp or guide;
Fig. 6 is a still further enlarged sectional detail of the guide.
Referring to the drawing:
The numeral I is used to designate the platen of any standard platen press having the usual paper blanket detachably held thereon by means of the clamping members 3. A slotted rocker 4 -is pivotally mounted, in the usual manner, adjacent one edge of the platen l and to which rocker 4 are adjustably secured the usual grippers 6. The usual stationary guides l are de- 5 tachably "secured to the blanket 2 in order to engage one edge of a sheet 8 upon said platen to limit, in one direction, movement of said sheet 8 upon said platen.
My invention consists in the hollow clamp 9 10 having a shouldered lip [2 upon one jaw thereof to detachably engage one edge of a slit l4 usually made in the paper blanket 2 of the platen -l for securing said clamp to any portion of the surface thereof. The other or upper jaw I5, 15 pivotally connected to the jaw or clamp 9, has a downwardly turned lip it upon the forward or engaging end thereof to engage and hold the edge of the slit l4 upon the shouldered lip I2 of the lower jaw of clamp 9, as disclosed in 20 large scale in Fig. 6 of the drawing. The lip I6 is normally held in such engaging relation by means of a suitable spring ll interposed within said hollow clamp and between the opposite ends of the members comprising said clamp. 25
A guide I8 is pivotally mounted, as at [9, within the clamp 9 and has one end extended exteriorly of said clamp 9 and provided with an upwardly turned edge or end as at 2|, to engage one edge of a sheet 8 upon the platen and to move said sheet 8, in a manner and for a purpose hereinafter more fully set forth.
The opposite end of the pivotally mounted guide l8 also extends exteriorly of the clamp 9 as at 22 and is connected by means of a string or other suitable connection 23 to a clamp 24 detachably clamped upon the slotted rocker 4 as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
A spring 26 within the hollow clamp 9 normally operates to move the upturned portion 2| 40 of the guide l8 outwardly to engage the adjacent edge of the sheet 8 and move the same to its proper position but is held against such outward movement by the connection 23 when the platen l is open or in sheet-receiving position. 45
In operation:
After the position of the sheet 8 upon the platen l has been determined, the stationary guides 1 are secured to the blanket 2 in any suitable manner to limit movement in one di- 50 rection of the sheet 8 thereon.
When such position has been definitely determined a slit I4 is made in the blanket 2 adjacent and slightly in spaced relation to the edge of the sheet 8 and the shouldered lip 12 of the 55 clamp 9 is inserted through said slit with one edge of said slit resting against the shoulder of said lip I2 and held in engaging relation therewith by the tension of the spring H, as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
The string or connection 23, while the platen l is in open position, is tightened, after being fastened to the clamp 24, to recede the lip 2| of the pivotally mounted guide l8 against the tension of its spring 26 as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The sheet 8 to be printed is placed upon the blanket 2 of the platen I with one edge against the stationary guides or stops 1 and with the adjacent edge of said sheet 8 against the receded lip 2! of the pivotally mounted guide l8, as disclosed in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. As the platen l is moved to bring the sheet'8 into contact with the type, not shown, of the.
press, the rocker 4, following the standard methd of platen presses, moves the grippers B and strand I0 stretched therebetween in the usual manner to hold said sheet 8 upon the platen and at the same time the clamp 24 is moved to release the connection 23 and thereby permit the spring 26 to move the lip 2| of the pivotally mounted guide It and the sheet 8 to its predetermined or registering position disclosed in full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
After an impression has been made upon the sheet 8 the platen I is returned to open or sheetreceiving position and during such movement the rocker 4 removes the grippers and strand In from the platen in the usual manner and at the same time moves the clamp 24 in the direction of the curved arrow in Fig. 2 of the drawing, which movement through the connection 23, again recedes the lip 21 of the guide l8 and against the tension of the spring 26.
It is obvious that successive sheets will always be moved to the same predetermined position so that perfect registration of said sheets with the type of the press may be easily obtained.
Having described my invention I claim A sheet guide for a platen press comprising a hollow clamp having one jaw provided with a shouldered lip for engaging one edge of a slit in the paper blanket of a platen on said press foraligning said clamp on said blanket; a guide pivotally mounted within said clamp and having an extension for engaging one edge of a sheet upon said platen; a spring for normally moving said guide and extension thereof to engage said edge of said sheet and moving the same to a predetermined position upon said platen; and means operatively connected to :said guide and to said press for preventing movement of said guide to move said sheet while said platen is in open position and actuated by a closing movement of said platen to release said guide and thereby permit the same to move said sheet to said predetermined position before said sheet is pressed by said platen against the type of the press.
