My invention pertains to the registering of sheets of paper upon which a printing opcration is to be performed, and relates more particularly to automatic registering devices for use in connection with presses of what is known as the Gordon type.
Attempts have been made from time to time to provide an efficient automatic sheet register for platen presses but no device has as yet beenv produced which has satisfied all the requirements of the case and especially so in the registering range or throw to synchronize with the various size sheets which may he handled by a certain size platen press.
it is the object of my invention, therefore to provide a certain, etlicient, and easily 1nanipulated device for registering the various sizes of sheets of paper by means of a multiple register arm device to synchronize the range of the throw with the range of the sheet size by thus devising a set travel are of the register fork of the device.
I have embodied my invention in several devices, a preferred and modified form of which I have chosen as satisfactorily indicating the various features thereof. These embodiments are illustrated in the accommnying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan View of my invention in modified form as applied to platen of a Gordon type printing press. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken on the line of Fig. 1. The device as illustrated is applied to the platen of a press of the Gordon type. The platen 1 is provided with ordinary tympan retaining bails 2 and end stops 3 against which the sheets of paper are adapted to be successively placed. A side stop 4 is also provided against which the side of the sheet engages when the sheet is in proper register. Pivoted to the platen by pivot 7 b is the ordinary gripper bar 5 which carries the gripper fingers 6 the function of which is to retain the sheet in place during the printing operation and prevent the sheet from adhering to the type when the platen recedes. The above are among the ordinary equipments of a Gordon press.
An ordinary registering apparatus 7 hav ing lateral adjustment is attached to the platen 1 and has drive engagement with the gripper bar 5. In application of the ordinary registering apparatus 7 a registering arm is used to pull the sheets first against the end stops 3 and then against the side stop l. This registering arm is inserted in a pivotally mounted arm 8 which swings or pivots from pivot with an undercut slideway 9 longitudinally slotted for the insertion of the registering arm with its operative length readily adjusted as desired, to suit the various sizes of paper used. Arm 8 through its clamping member 9 is attached to member 22 which swings with it. t can be readily seen that as the registering arm length of adjustment is increased its travel are is increased when the registering arm is pivoted by the action of the registering apparatus 7 and therefore a restriction to minimum size of sheet which can be registered without interference of the registering arm with the end stops 3 is established, this being based on the the established maximum depth of travel of the sheet delivery fingers 10, as fragmentarily shown in Fig. 3, upon the platen 1 to grasp a printed sheet when ready for delivery.
The object of my invention is effected by providing means for an approximately set travel of the register arm to greatly increase 7 the sheet size registering range without interference with the end stops 3 as well as increasing the range of the delivery fingers 10 to grasp a printed sheet 11, increasing the throw of the registering arm on the mum size sheet to be printed by increasing the throw of the pivot arm 8, and decreasing the throw of the registering arm by means of a plural drive, on the minimum size sheet to be printed. As shown in Fig. 1 (and the same is true also of Figs. 3 and 5) I provided plural holes 13a to receive the screw 13 whereby lateral adjustment of member 15 (or 15a) is made possible.
Referring particularly to Figs. 3, 4, 5, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19, in which my invention is shown in preferred form an under slotted bracket 12, which is of inverted U-shape, at tached to the registering apparatus 7 by a screw 13 and having an under cut slideway 14 for the frame 15 as shown in Figs. 3 and 4: with operative length adjustment by the clamp screw 16. A registering arm 17 terminating in a paper fork 18 is swivel mounted to the stud 19 with a washer 20 and cotter pin 21. A drive arm 22 has operative length adjustment in undercut slideway 9 on the pivot arm 8 by the set screw 23 and is slideably mounted between the frame 15 and the registering arm 17 with its driving stud 24 engaging through the longitudinal slot 25 and being slid'eably held thereto by the washer 26 and the cotter pin 27.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 6, 7 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, in which my invention is shown in modified form a frame 15a is mounted to the registering apparatus 7 by a clamping screw 13a'through the longitudinal frame slot 28, providing length adjustment. A registering arm 17 a terminating in a paper fork18a is swivelmounted to the stud 19a with a washer 20a and cotter pin 2161. A drive arm 22a with a normal positioning upset flange 29 has operative length adjustment in undercut slideway 9 on the pivot arm 8 by the set screw 23 and is slideably mounted between the frame 15a and the registering arm 17 a with its driving stud 24a engaging with the rim of the registering arm 17 a and slideably contacted thereto by the spring 30, which also holds the registering arm 17 a against the upset flange 29 when in normal position as shown in Fig. 1.
As has been shown longitudinal adjust ment of the registering arm 17 and drive arm 22 provides operative conformation to various sizes of sheets and positions of the sheets upon the platen and to meet the maximum range of the delivery fingers 10 to grasp a printed sheet ll from the platen 1, extent of throw of the registering arm 17 being ob tained by longitudinal adjustment of the drive arm 22 if desired. Various longitudinal sizes of the frame 15, registering arm 17 and drive arm 22 are obviously evident to also accommodate various sheet sizes and press platen sizes.
The operation of this device is as follows: When a sheet of paper is fed to the platen against the end stops 3 its front edge will enter between the tines of the fork 18 on the registering arm 17 as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, the sheet being shown in full lines representing correct position against the end and side stops and the dotted lines designating its final position, the grippers being in open position as shown. As the gripper bar 5 actuates the registering apparatus 7 its pivot arm 8 actuates the drive arm 22 which in turn actuates the register arm 17 with a swinging motion due to the pivotal mounting of the members as hereinbefore described to correctly position the sheet against the end stops 3 and side stop 4 for printing, the fork 18 now being cleared of the sheet 11, all of which actions are shown in dotted lines in the drawings, the solid lines representing normal or sheet'receiving position.
It is also shown that the directional movement of the registering arm 17 is opposed to the directional movement of the drive arm 22 and that either right or left side stops 4 can be used by a choice of right or left movement registering apparatus 7.
The object of my invention is effected by providing means to reduce the lateral throw of the register arm so it will not contact its paper fork with the end stop 3 when registering small size. sheets and thereby adding to the efliciency of the press by reducing the minimum sheet size limitations that may be automatically registered and by the means shown permit the sheet to have an adjustment of sidewise location as well as being located high enough on the platen 1 to be within the maximum grasping range'of the delbrery fingers 3, all of which is accomplished without direct attachment to the printing surface of the platen 1 and thereby preserving the full extentof the platen printing contact surface.
This d vice is simple and particularly certain in operation, as well as providing a greater range of sizes of sheets to be printed and with ready adjustment to same, and quick and easy attachment to a Gordon or similar type press.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a platen having an end stop and a side stop thereon and having a. gripper bar operatively connected therewith, a register drive arm, an independent register fork and means actuated by said gripper bar to engage the register drive arm with the register fork to move a sheet of paper into engagement first with the end stop and then with the side stop.
2. The combination with a platen having two laterally separated end stops, of a register drive arm located between said end stops, :1 non-positive sheet-grasping device operated by said register drive arm and automatic means for moving said sheet-grasping device through said register arm forward. upon the platen whereby the sheet of paper is brought against said end stops and left in engagement therewith.
3. The combination with a platen having two laterally separated end stops thereon and a gripper bar operatively connected with said platen, of a register drive arm, a sheet graming register arm independently mounted on the platen and operatively connected to a register drive arm providing means through a connection drive with the gripper bar whereby the sheet grasping register arm is moved forward upon the platen to bring the sheet into engagement with said end stops.
4;. The combination with a platen having an end stop and a side stop thereon and a gripper bar operatively connected with said platen, oi a laterally adjustable device arranged to lie upon said platen and having means for operating upon a sheet of paper. connection means between said device through a driving member operative upon said device and said gripper bar whereby a longitudinal pull is effected upon said device whereby the latter is caused to move laterally upon said platen to bring the sheet into engagement with the side stop.
A sheet registering device for use in coimcction with Gordon and similar presses, comprising a member arranged to be operatively connected through an independent driving means with the gripper bar, a device connected to said driving means and arranged to lie upon the platen, said device having means for operating upon a sheet of paper, and a member arranged to be attached to the platen said member comprising means operatively connected with the gripper bar and rocked thereby for changing t e longitudinal movement of said device into a lateral movement.
6. A sheet registering device for use in connection with Gordon and similar presses comprising a member arranged to be attached to the platen, a second member aranged to be operatively connected with the gripper bar, connection means through an independent driving arm between said members, a lever having independent attaching means to said first member arranged to lie upon the platen, said lever having means for operating upon a sheet of paper and being connected with said second member by means of said independent driving arm.
7. A sheet registering device for use in connection with Gordon and similar presses comprising a member adapted to be connected to the gripper bar of the platen, a second member pivoted to the first mentioned member and adapted to be attached to the platen, a driving arm pivoted to said member first mentioned and arranged to lie upon the platen, a third member adapted to be attached to the platen having an arm pivoted to said second member and arranged to lie upon the platen, said latter arm member having at its end means for engaging a sheet of paper.
8. In combination with a printing press, an independent register arm bearing a non-post tive sheet grasping device, a secondary driving member, and means to adjust the relation of the driving member to the sheetgrasping member.
9. A printing press in combination with a register arm bearing a non-positive sheetgrasping device, a secondary driving member and means to reduce the travel are of the sheet-grasping device through the secondary member.
10. A printing press in combination with a register arm member bearing a non-positive sheet-grasping device, a driving member and means of longitudinal adjustment of both members.
11. A printing press in combination with a register arm member and a driving arm me1nher and means of reverse lateral movement of the first member by the second member.
12. The combination of a printing press, registering apparatus, a first member, a second floating member operated by the aforesaid first member, a non-positive sheet-grasping device swingingly borne by said floating member to secure a certain set independent operative throw of each member.
13. A sheet registering device for use in connection with Gordon and similar presses, comprising a registering arm arranged to lie upon the platen, an independently mounted driving means for same, said registering arm including means adapted to engage a sheet of paper, mechanism linking the registering arm driving means to a moving part of the press for effecting a longitudinal movement of said driving means, and means carried by the press for changing said longitudinal movement into a lateral movement.
