To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES P. KLoRnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Registering Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to sheet registering devices and relates particularly to register ing devices for use in connection with platen printing presses, especially those of the Gordon type. i
It is an object of my invention to pro vide an automatic device for bringing sheets to be printed into a correct registering position upon the surface to which they are fed, which will be of a simple construction and cheap to produce, which will be durable in use, whichwill be accurate and reliable in operation, and in which the number of parts will be reduced to a minimum. Otherobjects of my invention will appear from the following specification and claims.
. l have shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, and described in the following specification, one form of register device constructed in accordance with my invention. In these drawings.

In the following specification, the register device of my invention is described as applied to the platen of a job press of the Gordon type. Such a press comprises a platen 10,'mounted so as to becapable of being rocked into and out of prlntlng relation with the type-bed of the press, and having bails 11 for securing a tympan 12 there on. A gripper bar 13 is mounted to roclr in bearings carried by the platen and has grippers 14 mounted thereon so as to be longitudinally adjustable thereof. When the,

"When however, the platen is in position for receiving a sheet, the grippers 14 are raised from the platen as indicated in the drawings, the gripper bar having then rocked to a posi tionin which its top is at an angle to the surface of the platen (Fig. #3). A register block is secured to the platen at the center of the front thereof. block includes a top portion 17 formedwith a longitudinal groove 18 having a number of tapped holes 19 therein. Extending downward from the top portion l? is a web 20 whlch lies closely to the front edge of the platen and has a flange 21 extending at right angles therefrom beneath the platen. A pair of holes 22 are formed in the flange 21. through which holes pass stems 23 having collars 24 formed thereon. The flange 21 engages against the collars 24 and is held in such engagement by nuts 25. The stems 23 are threaded into the platen, and extend through tothe top of the latter. By adusting the stems in the platen, the post t on of the top of theregister block, relatlvely to the surface of the readily be adjusted.
The register device herein described comprises a base 26 stamped from sheet metal and formed with a pair of tongues 27 adapted to enter the groove 18 of theregister block. The base is secured in position by means of a screw 28 entering one or an-.
other of the holes 19 in the register block. The base 26 is formed at the rear with a pair of spaced sockets 29 for receiving a pin 30. Upon the pin 30, between the sockets 29. is rockably mounted an arm 31 having an upwardly extending fork 32 carrying a pin The arm 81 lies upon the top of the gripper bar 13 with its end beneath a bail 34 with which the gripper bar is provided. This being the case, when the gripper bar is rocked from the position shown in Fig.3 to a position in which its top is substantially parallelwith the platen surface, the pin 33 will be moved towards the platen.

The ball 37 is mounted in a socket 38 secured to one end of a flat swinging arm 39. The arm 39 is pivoted to the base 26 by means of a pin 40, and is bent at its end so as to form a socket ll, rectangular in cross-section, for receiving the shank of a registerfinger 4.2. A screw. 43, operating upon a bearer plate 44, serves to hold the register finger in position in the socket. The register finger 4:2 terminates in a fork 45 for receiving the edge of a sheet fed to the platen.
The sheets are fed to the platen when the register finger and other parts are in the position shown in the drawings. The sheet, designated 46 in the drawings, will often be fed so as to engage in the fork in an out-ofregister position such as is indicated in full lines in Fig. 1. As the platen rocks from feeding toward printing position, the gripper bar rocks from theposition shown toward a position in which its top will be parallel with the platen surface. This movement of the gripper bar causes the hall 3'? topush the socket 238 towards the platen, thereby causing the arm 39 to swing about its pivot 43. The forks?) of the register arm is thuscaused to describe an arc of a circle having the pin L0 as its center, and is brought into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, with one side and one end of the sheet in engagement with the end register pins l7 and side register pin t8,.the fork sliding off the sheet after it has thus brought it into perfect register.
A register device of my invention con structed as described above comprises but few parts, and these parts are of a sturdy nature and capable of enduring heavy and continuous use. The construction is simple and cheap. and the application of the device to a press necessitates but a very slight amount of work on the latter. The device, moreover, can be depended upon always to perform its intended function accurately and efficiently.
I have given above a detailed description of one form of register device in which my in vention may be embodied; but I wish it understood that my invention may be embodied in other forms, and that changes may be made in the particular form described and shown, without exceeding the scope of my invention. what I claim being 1. A sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, an arm pivoted to said base. a sheet-gripping member connected with said arm at one side of its pivot, and a foot pivoted to said base forcooperative engagement with the gripper bar of said platen, said foot being connected with said arm at the other side of the pivot of the latter.
2. A sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, a lever pivoted to said base and having a foot for coopative engagement with the gripper bar of said platen and having an upwardly extending arm, a member movably connected with said base and having sheet engaging means associated therewith, and a link pivot-edto said arm and connected with said member.
3. A. sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, a lever pivoted to said base and having a foot for cooperative engagement with the gripper bar of said platen and having an upwardly extending arm, a member movably connected with said base and having sheet engaging means associated therewith, and a link pivoted to said armand having a ball and socket connection with said member.

A sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, a lever pivoted to said baseand having a foot for cooperative engagement with the gripper bar of said platen, and having an upwardly extending arm, a member pivoted to said base, a sheet engaging device carried by said member, and a link pivoted to said arm and having a ball and socket connection with said member.

A sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, a lever pivoted to said base having a foot for cooperative engagement with the gripper bar of said platen and having an upwardly extending arm. a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said base, a sheet engaging device carried by said member at one end, and means for connecting the other end of said member with said arm.

A sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, a lever pivoted to said base having a foot for cooperative engagement with the gripper bar of said platen and having an upwardly extending arm, a member pivoted between its ends to said base, a sheet engaging device connected with said member at one end to the latter,
and a link pivoted to said arm and having a ball and socket connection with the other end of said member.
7. A sheet registering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen, said base having an upwardly projecting bearing, a bell-crank lever pivotally mounted in said bearing and having an arm for cooperatively engaging the gripper bar of said platen and another arm extending upwardly, a member pivoted intermediate its ends to said base and having a socket at one end, a sheet engaging device adjustably mounted in said socket, and means for connecting the other end of said member with said upwardly extending arm. a
8. A sheetregistering device comprising a base for attachment to a platen and having an upwardly projecting bearing, a bell-crank ball and socket connection with the other end of said member.
