, 1 Claim.
This invention relates to'that class of inventions classifiable in general as mops and it has more specific reference to what is specifically denoted in the trade as a floor mop.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a novel coupling or jointing unit which serves as a union or connection between a handle mop head and attaching frame cooperable with said mop head..
In addition to the foregoing, I provide a mop head having a unique fabric formation which constitutes a. receptacle and. holder for the at-= taching frame.
A further object is to provide a wire frame which is adapted to be attached to the coupling means. o
Other features and advantages will be found by implication or otherwise in the succeeding detailed description and concluding claim.
In the accompanying illustrative drawings wherein like numerals are employed to designat like elements throughout the same:-
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation showing the complete assembly and illustrating in particular the adaptability. of the improved handle and frame coupling unit.
Figure 2 is a view of a fragmentary nature, which may be conveniently described as a transverse or vertical sectional view taken approximately on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a perspective illustration of the handle, frame and jointing or coupling means between said handle and frame.
Figure 4 is a perspective drawing of the mop head as a complete detachable unit.
The mop head, denoted by the numeral 5 is of the so-called "wet mop" type and includes a fabric backing which is fashioned and attached to function as a frame pocket 6. This pocket is formed at one end with an entrance opening 'I' suitably stitched and reinforced around its marginal portion as indicated at 8. It is apparent that this pocket is adapted to accommodate the substantially U-shaped portion 9 of the handle fastening frame, which by reason of its expansible and contractible action can be slippedinto the pocket 6 by slight contraction and thereafter allowed to expand so that it is held in place.
This frame is formed of a single length of wire and the free ends of the arms Ill are formed with return bends and directed inwardly within the limits of the frame proper, said portions being denoted by the numeral II. The ends H of the frame are directed laterally and inwardly toward each other, after which they are bent up vertically as denoted at [3. The terminals M of the frame are bent laterally outward in opposite directions to form L-shaped members, which are adapted to be received by the rubber coupling 5 device or unit i5, in a manner to be presently explained, for the purpose of attaching the frame iii to said rubber coupling.
This coupling is formed from a single of rubber fashioned to provide an elastic socket ii 10 to accommodate the handle it, which socket forms a ferrule for said handle. The head of the rubber coupling includes, by the presence of the notch it, a Pair oi spaced hearings or attaching elements is, which are formed with bores for 15 the reception of the terminals it oi the frame. Thus, the terminals it function as journals in said bores, and the clearance space it accommo dates the sh it of the frame, thereby permitting the rubber coupling it, which receives 20 the handle it, to be pivotally connected to said frame. It is apparent that the resilient character of the coupling i5 which receives the handle 16, permits the handle to be angled laterally with respect to the frame; and that this resilient char- 25 acter of the coupling in conjunction with the contractibility and expansibility' of the frame allows the handle to be flexed from side to side, both of which actions of the handle are necessary and advantageous for the proper and emcient so operation of the mop.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the 35 drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor changes in shape, size and rearrangement of details coming within the field of invention claimed may be resorted to in actual practice, 40 if desired.
What is claimed is:
A structure of the class described comprising a wire frame having the intermediate portions of its free ends bent vertically of the body of said 46 frame, said free ends being bent laterally outward in opposite direction from each other and at right angles to said intermediate portions, coupling means having its head provided with a substantially T-shaped bore for the reception of 59 the intermediate portions and free ends of the frame, and a handle adapted to be connectedto said coupling.
