SOUND REPRODUCING APPARATUS Filed May 22, 1935 Patented Oct. 6, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SOUND REPRODUCING APPARATUS ration of Illinois Application May 22, 1935, Serial No. 22,886
11 Claims.
The present invention relates to an improvement in sound reproducing apparatus of the character employing a sound record of the disc type, and more particularly to a novel arrangement in a carrying case whereby the record supporting platen may be removed and conveniently and ffirmly secured in a compartment provided there- An object of the present invention is to providean improved carrying case for sound reproducing apparatus of the type employing sound records of the disc type.
Another object of the invention is to provide within a carrying case of the character described. a novel form of support for a demountable record supporting platen.
' A further object of the invention is to provide a novel form of platen holding means for apparatus of the character disclosed, wherein the record holding means in addition to firmly supporting the platen will also hold a separate baflie of the type disclosed in our oopending application entitled Loud speaker mounting, filed May 22, 1935, and identified by Serial Number 22,887.
will be in part evident to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains and in part pointed out as the description thereof proceeds.
For a better understanding of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawing wherein there is shown, by way of illustration and not of limitation, preferred embodiments thereof.
In the drawing, wherein like numerals refer to like parts- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carrying case of the character contemplated by this invention with a portion broken away to reveal one embodiment of the invention, 40 Figure 2 is an end elevation of the carrying case illustrated in Figure 1, with a portion thereof broken away to more clearly show the manner of securing the demounted record supporting platen,
Figure 3 and 4 are fragmentary views similar to Figure 2, showing arrangements for supporting a record platen and a separate loud speaker baiiie, and
Figure 5 shows a modified form of the platen 50 supporting means contemplated by this inventlon.
For the purpose of illustrating this invention we have, in the drawing, shown a carrying case of the type contemplated in a copending appli- 55 cation filed by Frank Freimann, August 18, 1934,
entitled Carrying case and identified by Serial Number 740,448.
In the drawing, the numeral l0 designates a carrying case that is adapted to enclose a picture projecting lantern, a loud speaker and a suitable 5 thermionic amplifying means, all of which are adapted to operate in conjunction with an electromagnetic sound reproducing apparatus. The carrying case II) has a cover II that can be secured thereover to enclose the sound reproducing 10 apparatus mounted externally upon the top of the carrying case II). The sound reproducing apparatus, in one form, consists of a suitable motor driven means having a vertically disposed shaft l2 upon which a record supporting platen 15 I: may be mounted. Cooperating with a sound record upon the supporting platen l3 there is an electromagnetic pick-up device H which is carried by a supporting arm I5. The supporting arm I5 is mounted with a swivel connection upon a pedestal It so that when the pick-up device I 4 is placed in the sound track of the record it will generate sound frequency currents which can be reproduced by a suitable loud speaker. In the present instance such a loud speaker, designated by the numeral I1, is shown as mounted in the side of the carrying case III. The picture projecting apparatus, previously referred to as contained within the carrying case 80, is mounted upon a hinged panel It at one end of the carrying case in such a manner that when this hinged panel is swung outwardly the'picture projecting apparatus will move into a position for the projection of a picture upon a screen located in front thereof. I 35 For convenience the carrying case it) is made as narrow as is practicable to contain the picture projecting apparatus, the thermionic amplifying means and the loud speaker. Therefore, in order that the sound reproducing apparatus 40 may be rendered adaptable to the reproduction of programs from records having a diameter greater than the width of the carrying case, the record supporting platen I3 is made removable from its driving shaft l2. when the record supporting platen I3 is thus removed from its horizontal position upon the driving mechanism it is carried in a narrow vertical compartment l9 at one side of the carrying case It where the cover ll may be secured thereover. Under these conditions the supporting arm I! will be secured in a stable position, in the manner disclosed and claimed inv the aforesaid application, filed by Frank Freimann. The carrying case with the entire equipment can then be. transported conveniently from one place to another. For this purpose the cover II is provided with a handle or grip 20, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, the sound record supporting platen l3 has a central hub 2| with an axially extending aperture 22 through which the motor driven shaft l2 may project to center the sound record as is well known. In addition to this axially extending hole 22 the hub 2| is provided, in' one embodiment of this invention, with a transversely extending aperture 23 into which a supporting pin 24 is adapted to project. In order to provide for a narrow compartment IQ for the removed platen |3 we provide a notch 25 which extends downwardly from the top edge of a compartment forming partition 26. This notch 25 is made of suiziicient width to receive the hub 2| of the record supporting platen i3 and it is deep enough to hold the platen l3 at a point where the cover I I will close thereover. The vertically extending pin 24 is shown as projecting upwardly in the center of the notch 25 so that when the transversely extending aperture 23 of the hub 2| is placed thereover the hub 2| of the record supporting platen l3 will be centered within the notch 25 of the partition 26. When the pin 24 thus located in the notch 25 is inclined at a 'slight angle, as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, it will exert a wedging action upon the hub 2| and cause the flanged rim of the record supporting platen I3 to be pressed firmly against the side of the compartment forming partition 26. This will firmly secure the platen l3 upon the partition 26 and prevent a rattling thereof during transportation of the apparatus from one place to another.
If the carrying case is equipped with a removable loud speaker I1 and a separate baffle forming member, as contemplated in an application filed by us concurrently herewith, the pin 24 may be inclined at an opposite angle, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. This will cause the record supporting platen l3 to be urged away from the compartment forming partition 26. When the pin 24 is inclined in this manner and a separate bafile forming member 21 is placed within the compartment l9, as illustrated, both the platen and the baiiie forming member 21 will be snugly held against vibration within the compartment IQ of the carrying case.
In Figure 4 of the drawing, there is showna variation of the last above arrangement, in which a pin, designated by the numeral 28, is disposed within the compartment l9 and out of alignment with the notch 25, so that it will engage the aperture 23 in the hub 2| when the separate baffle forming member 21 is disposed between the baflle forming partition 28 and the record supporting platen l3.
In each of these last two arrangements the disposition and the inclination of the pins 24 and 28 will be such that a wedging action will be produced in one direction or another to firmly hold the platen l3 and the separate baffle forming member 21 against one of the side walls of the compartment l9.
In Figure 5 of the drawing, there is illustrated an embodiment of the invention, wherein instead of a pin 24 or a pin 28 the notch 25 is provided with a member 29 having upwardly extending spaced portions 30 which are adapted to engage a groove 3| that extends completely around the outside of a hub 32 upon the record supporting platen l3. In this embodiment it is contemplated that the upwardly projecting portions 3!! of the member 29 may be inclined at one angle or another to provide for a wedging action similar to that previously described in connection with pins 24 and 28.
While we have, for the sake of clearness and in order to disclose our invention so that the same can be readily understood, described and illustrated specific devices and arrangements, we desire to have it understood that this invention is not limited to the specific means disclosed, but may be embodied in other ways that will suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art. It is believed that this invention is new and it is desired to claim it so that all such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered as part of this invention' Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
