GOVERNOR FOR TURBINES Filed Sept. 3, 1935 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 Patented Oct. 6, 1936 r UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,056,866 GOVERNOR FOR TURBINES William J. Pugh, East Milton, Mass. Application September 3, 1935, Serial No. 39,005 2 Claims. (Cl. 253-144) This invention relates to turbines which may deflecting water to the runner 'l and by varying be readily and economically installed and of the the deflection of the water tothe runner, power character employing a turbine runner and a developed by the device may be varied. The guide deflecting guide therefor, and has for the primary H1 is capable of turning or rotating and itsdirecobject the provision of a load control means for tion of rotation is opposite to that of the turbine 45 automatically governing the power development runner. of the device by controlling the guide to vary the Located in the casing 4 and secured to the tufluid deflection to the turbine runner and therebular shaft 9 is a brake drum ll having assoby automatically vary the output of power prociated therewith brake shoes l2. The brake shoes portionately to the load on the device. are journaled on a stub l3 secured to the cover 5. 1
With these and other objects in view, this in- The free ends of the shoes are engaged by a cam vention consists in certain novel features of conl4 and are held in engagement therewith by a struction, combination and arrangement of parts spring I5 connecting said shoes. The cam is seto be hereinafter more fully described and cured to a shaft 16 supported by a journal l'l carclaimed. ried by the cover 5. An arm I8 is secured to the 15 For a complete understanding of my invention, shaft and has connected thereto a governor reference is to be had to the following description mechanism IS. The governor mechanism is of a and accompanying drawings, in which conventional ball type construction and is se- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, cured to and driven by the shaft 6. The collar 22 permits the tension of the Figure 4 is a top plan View illustrating the apspring 20 to be varied and consequently provides 25 plication of the turbine to a stream or body of means for varying the action of the governor water. mechanism. A bell crank lever 23 is connected Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional to the governor yoke 2| and to a link 24 which is View showing the same. in turn connected to the arm I8. The bell crank Referring in detail to the drawings, the nu lever is pivotally mounted to a bracket 25 carried 30 meral l indicates a stream or any other body of by the cover 5. A dash pct 26 is carried by the water and traversing said stream is a dam 2 formcover 5 and is connected to the link 24 and ining a part of a turbine 3 driven by the force of cludes in its construction a compensation spring the water. The dam and turbine form a single 21. The governor mechanism is driven by the unit and the installation of the unit to the stream shaft 6 and acts to apply and release the brake 5 or body of water is extremely simple and economshoes l2 from the drum I I. The brake shoes l2 ic'al as will be apparent from Figures 4 and 5 of when applied to the drum H prevent rotation of the drawings. The turbine includes a vertically the guide 10 of the turbine and the holding of the arranged cylindrical casing 4 to which the dam guide against rotation provides a greater deflec- 0 units are secured. The upper end of the casing 4 tion of fluid to the turbine runner, consequently 40 is closed by a removable cover 5 forming a jourpermitting maximum power development by the nal for a vertically arranged turbine shaft 6. latter. It is to be understood that the rotation The shaft 6 projects well into the casing and has of the guide is due to the action of the force of secured to its lower end a turbine runner I of a water thereon. The governor mechanism is so conventional construction. The casing 4 is connected with the brake shoes that an increased 45 equipped with a screened inlet 8 to admit water speed of the shaft 6 brings about a release of the from the stream to the runner 1 for bringing brake shoes from the drum, allowing the turbine about rotation of the shaft 6. The flow of water guide to rotate or turn under the influence of the through the inlet 8 is controlled by a sliding gate water, and reducing the power developed by the 6 equipped with an operating means 'I of any turbine runner, which brings about a slowing 50 conventional construction. down of the latter. As the load increases on the A tubular shaft 9 is journaled on the shaft 6 shaft 6, the speed of rotation thereof decreases within the casing and its lower end has secured and the governors action is reverse or brings thereto a turbine guide ill of the conventional about application of the brake shoes to the drum construction. The guide l0 acts as a medium for and thereby prevents turning of the guide H) for 55 increasing the angle of deflection of water to the turbine runner and thereby increases the power output from the latter. a
While this invention is described as especially adaptable for propulson by water force, it is to be understood that its application is readily adaptable for turbines operated from air or gas pressure or any other fluid pressure.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A turbine including a casing having located therein a turbine runner and a deflecting guide therefor to control the power output of said turbine runner, a shaft secured to the runner and journaled to the casing, a tubular shaft journaled on the first shaft and connected to the guide, a brake drum secured to the tubular shaft, a brake mechanism engageable and disengageable with the drum and supported by the casing, and a governor supported by said casing and connected to the brake mechanism and to the first shaft.
2. In a turbine, a casing having a turbine runner therein'and a deflecting guide for the latter rotatable in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the runner, a shaft secured to the runner, a tubular shaft journaled on the first shaft and secured to the guide, a brake drum secured to the tubular shaft, brake shoes to engage and disengage with the drum the casing, an operating means for said brake shoes carried by the casing, and a governor connected to the operating means and to the first shaft for controlling the deflecting guide for increasing and decreasing the power output by said 15 turbine runner.
