To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT T. HERB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Speed-Governors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to governing mechanisms and has for an object to produce a simple, highly sensitive and efiective governing mechanism which is capable of controlling the operation of the fluid delivery valve or mechanisms of an engine or other fluid operated apparatus.
A further object of my invention is to produce a speed responsive mechanism which forms a part of or is included in a fluid circulatory system and controls the delivery of fluid to the system and the pressure of the fluid within the system.
A further object is to produce such a governing mechanism which is responsive in operation both to the speed of the apparatus to be governed and the fluid pressure existing Within the circulatory system.
Other objects and advantages as Well as the novel details of construction will appear hereinafter, it being understood that changes in proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
The drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof is a sectional view of an embodiment of my invention and discloses a speed responsive mechanism which is adapted to control the delivery of fluid from a source of fluid pressure to the pressure chamber and to a delivery port in response to variations in the speed of the apparatus to be governed .and variations in the pressure of the liquid or fluid delivered to the pressure chamber.
The apparatus also includes a relief or discharge port which is adapted to be placed in communication with both the pressure chamber and the delivery port and is controlled by the speed responsive means and the pressure responsive means.
10 designates a governor housing provided with an oil inlet 11 in communication with a source of supply between which and the housing 10 is a suitable for the flow of oil.
12 designates a delivery conduit communieating with a valve operating relay of any suitable construction, the valve operated by the relay being in the steam line, of the engine to be governed. lVithin the housing 10 is a valve seat 13 provided with inlet ports 14L communicating with the circumferential chamber 15 with which the inlet 11 communicates. The valve seat is also provided with discharge ports 16 discharging into the housing 10. Slidably mounted within theseat 13 is a tubular valve 17 having ports 18 and 19. The valve17 is pro vided with an open end 20 communicating with a delivery chamber 21, with which the discharge conduit 12 communicates.
22 designates a hollow valve stem communicating with the valve 17 and connected at one end to a diaphragm 23 located in the pressure chamber 2 1 formed by the housing 25. The governor spindle 26 is sleeved upon the stem 22 and it is provided with bifurcated arms 27 and 28 to receive the bell crank levers 29 and 30 which carry the governor weights 31 and 32. The ends 33 and 3 1 of these bell cranks are adapted to engage a collar 35 on the spindle 22 so'as to cause a downward longitudinal movement of the spindle and the valve 17 when the governor weights move outwardly under the action of centrifugal force. The governor spindle is provided with a gear 36 which meshes conduit provided with the gear 37 on the lay shaft 38. The
spindle 26 is mounted in the bush 39 carried by the diaphragm 40.
41 designates an overflow port through which oil may escape from the housing 10.
The operation of the device is as follows: As soon as the engine starts to operate motion is communicated to the lay shaft 38 which in turn rotates the spindle 26. The rotation of the spindle 26 will cause the governor weights to move outwardly and impart a downward movement to the valve stem 22 and a downward movement to the valve 17. When the valve 17 has moved a suflicient amount to uncover the ports 18 oil under pressure will be admitted from the source of supply through 11 and the ports 18 completely filling the tubular valve 17 the tubular valve stem 22 and the space 24. Oil will then flow through 20 into 21 and out through 12 to the oil relay to actuate the relay to impart a closing movement to the admission valve in the steam line to the engine. The increased speed of the engine will cause an increase in the pres sure on the oil relay, and consequently in-' crease the closing movement of the steam valve. When the load increases or when the admission valve in the steam line is delivering less steam than that demanded by the load, the speed of the engine will be reduced so that the governor weights 31 and 32 will move inwardly toward the spindle. The oil pressure under the diaphragm 23 will then cause the valve stem and valve to move upward so as to close off the ports 18' and un cover ports 19 so as to permit the escape of oil through the port 16 into the housing 10. When the level of the oil reaches a predetermined height the excess oil will pass out through the port 41.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A governor comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a valve for the inlet, a valve stem, a diaphragm connected to the valve stem, a governor spindle, weights car ried by the governor spindle, and means for imparting movement to the valve stem in response to variations of movement of the weights.
2. A governor comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet, a valve for the inlet, a valve stem, a diaphragm connected to the valve stem, a pressure chamber for the diaphragm, a governor spindle, weights carried by the governor spindle, and means for imparting movement to the valve stem in response to variations of movement of the weights.
3. A governor comprising a governor spindle, weighted arms carried by the spindle, a chamber normally closed at its inlet end for admitting fluid to a valve actuating device, a valve for opening and closing said chamber, a valve stem, a diaphragm connected to said valve stem, and means on the valve stem for engagement with the weight- 7 ed arms.
4. A governor comprising a spindle,
.weighted arms on said spindle, a valved arms carried by the spindle for engagement with the collar. 7
6. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having an inlet, a delivery, and a discharge port, means controlling communication between the inlet and the delivery ports and between the delivery and the discharge ports, and fluid pressure responsive means for controlling the operation of the first mentioned means.
7. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having an inlet, a delivery, and a discharge port, means controlling communication between the inlet and the delivery ports and between the delivery and the discharge ports, and centriiugally actuated means, responsive to the fluid pressure delivered through the delivery port for con trolling the operation of the first mentioned means. 1 V
8. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having an inlet, a delivery and a discharge port, a fluid pressure responsive valve for controlling communication between the inlet and the delivery ports and between the delivery and the discharge ports, and speed responsive means for controlling the operation' of said valve.
9. A governing device comprising a casing having an inlet, a delivery, a discharge port, ancla pressure chamber formed therein, a valve for establishing communication between the inlet and the delivery ports and said chamber and for establishing communication between the delivery and the discharge ports, centrifugally actuated means for controlling-the operation of the fluid valve, and means responsive to the pressure within said chamber for opposing the centrifugally actuated means.
10. A governing mechanismcomprising a casing'having an inlet,'a delivery and a discharge port. formed therein, a valve for establishing communication between said ports and for delivering fluid from the inlet port to a pressure chamber, a centrifugally actuated weight for controlling the operation of said tubular valve, and means responsive to the fluid pressure within said chamber for opposing the 'motion trans mitted to said tubular valve by said means.
11. Agoverning mechanism comprising a casing having a fluid inlet and a fluid delivery port, centrifugally actuated means controlling communication between the in-v let and delivery port,'a chamber having stationary walls located within the casing and communicating with said inlet port, and means responsive togpressure within said chamber for modifying the operation of said centrifugally actuated means.
12. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having a fluid inlet and a fluid delivery port, a valvefor controlling commu-;
nication between the inlet and delivery port, centrlfugallyactuated means for actuating said valve, and means responslve to fluid pressure delivered by said valve for op posing the operation of said centrifugally actuated means.
13. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having a fluid inlet and delivery port, a tubular valve for controlling communication between said ports, a centrifugal Weight for actuating said valve, a chamber located within the casing and adapted to communicate With the inlet port through said tubular valve, and means responsive to fluid pressure Within said chamber for modifying the operation of said valve.
14. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having a fluid inlet and a fluid delivery port, a tubular valve for controlling communication between said ports, a centrifugal Weight for actuating said valve, and means responsive to the fluid pressure delivered through said delivery port for copies of this patent may be obtained for opposing the actuating force imparted to said valve by said Weight.
15. A governing mechanism comprising a casing having a fluid inlet and fluid delivery port, centrifugally actuated means for controlling communication between said ports and the delivery of fluid through the delivery port, and means responsive to the pressure of the fluid delivered through said delivery port for modifying the operation of said centrifugally actuated means.
