Description

Sept. 1, 1936. J. MARTORELL 2, 52,785
SAFETY RAZOR AND BLADE Filed Oct. 19, 1935 Inventor Md A ttorr zeys Patented Sept. 1, 1936 entree. stares FATENT OFFIE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved safety razor and blade, and the object of the invention is to provide an improved safety razor blade holder, characterized by such a construction and arrangement of parts whereby a cap is omitted and the guard is of such a character that it can be readily adjusted to accommodate blades of different width, and can also retain the blade at the desired curvature thereon.
The invention together with its objects an advantages will be best understood from a study a of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the safety razor.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational View taken at right angles to Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Figure 4 is a plan view.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a spring member.
Figure 6 is an elevational view of one of the guard sections.
Figure 7 is an edge elevational view of a guard section.
Figure 8 is a plan View of a blade, and
Figure 9 is a perspective view of one of the handle sections.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the improved razor comprises a pair of complemental guard plates 5 and 6 each of which, adjacent one edge and at opposite corners thereof is provided with upwardly extending projections 'l' for engaging a blade in a manner clearly shown in Figure 3 for retaining the blade in position thereon.
At their inner or confronting edges the plates 5 and 6 respectively are provided with depending skirt portions 8 and 9 respectively, and integral with the skirt portion 8 of the guard plate 5 is a handle section l8.
Complemental to the handle section l6 is a handle section H, and the handle sections l6 and H at their meeting edges are provided with outstanding marginal flanges l2 and I3 respectively as shown.
Adjacent the upper end thereof the handle section 59 has its flanges extended and reversely bent to provide spring fingers or lugs M adapted to engage over the end edges E5 of the flange l3 of handle section I! as suggested in Figure 2.
Also at the bottom or free end thereof the handle section H has its flange 5! provided with an integral lug or finger l6 engaging in a notch ll in the lower or free end of the handle section H as will be clear from a study of Figures 3, 5 and 9. Thus the fingers I4 and I6 thus engaging the handle section H in the manner explained serve to releasably secure the handle sections together.
The skirt 9 of the guard plate 6 is provided with a shank or extended portion [8 which extends into the hollow of the handle formed by thesections I El and II and as clearly shown in Figure 3. tension l8 are shoulders H) which rest on the adjacent end of the handle section II whereby said section forms a fulcrum for the plate 9.
Also accommodated within the handle formed by the sections 86 and H is a spring member 2!! one end edge of which is clamped between the meeting edges of the handle sections I0 and H at the free end of the handle and as shown in Figure 3.
The spring member has a narrow elongated extension 20a which bears against the side of the shank l8 opposite to the handle section I 0 in a manner clearly shown in Figure 3 for normally biasing skirt 9 and associated guard plate 6 away from skirt 8 and associated guard plate 5.
An adjusting screw 2! has a non-threaded portion of its shank accommodated within a suitable opening provided in the skirt 8 and said shank of the screw has a threaded portion screw threadedly engaged with a fork 22 provided on the skirt 9. Obviously, through the medium of the screw 2i, skirt 9 and associated plate 6 may be readily adjusted relativeto skirt 8 and its associated guard plate 5 and as may be required dependent upon whether or not it is desired to support the blade 22 either substantially flatly upon the guard plate or in a transversely curved condition as for example suggested in Figure 3.
To guide the skirt 9 and plate 6 so that the same moves relatively to the skirt 8 and associated plate 5 in a substantially horizontal plane, the skirt 8 at its opposite edges is provided with guide fingers 23 that are accommodated in notches 26 provided in opposite side edges of the skirt 9 and as will be clear from a study of Figures 2,
sections, and that accordingly a razor of this character may be cheaply and economically manufactured and consequently retailed for a nominal price.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
At the junction of the skirt 9 and ex- 10 1. In a safety razor, a pair of complemental guard plates each provided adjacent one edge and at opposite corners with blade engaging means, said plates at their confronting edges being provided with depending skirts, a handle section integral with one of said skirts, a handle section complemental to the first handle section, inter-engaging means on said handle sections for securing said sections together, and the other of said depending skirts having a shank extending inwardly between the handle sections, and a spring member secured between said handle sections and having an end bearing on said shank and normally biasing the second skirt away from the first named skirt.
2. In a safety razor, a pair of complemental guard plates each provided adjacent one edge and at opposite corners with blade engaging means, said plates at their confronting edges being provided with depending skirts, a handle sectionintegral with one of said skirts, a handle section complemental to the first handle section,
inter-engaging means on said handle sections for extending through openings in said skirts having threaded engagement with one of the skirts for adjusting the guard plates and for securing said plates at the desired adjustment.
3. In a safety razor, a pair of complemental guard plates each provided adjacent one edge and at opposite corners with blade engaging means, said plates at their confronting edges being provided with depending skirts, a handle section integral with one of said skirts, a handle section complemental to the first handle section, inter-engaging means on said handle sections for securing said sections together, and the other of said depending skirts having a shank extending inwardly between the handle sections, and a spring member secured between said handle sections and having an end bearing on said shank and normally biasing the second skirt away from the first named skirt, and an adjusting screw extending through openings in said skirts having threaded engagement with one of the skirts for adjusting the guard plates and for securing said plates at the desired adjustment, guide fingers extending from the first one of said skirts, and
the second one of said skirts having notches accommodating said guide fingers and cooperable
