Description

I Nov. 12, 1935. J. MARTORELL SAFETY RAZOR Filed June 5, 1955 /7 Inpenlor Jmgzzz'z/Vrimfll,
- Patented Nov. 12, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 8 Claims.
of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blade.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the razor comprises a guard consisting of a pair of substantially identical rectangular guard plates 1 and 8 respectively. The plates I and B as shown in Figure 3 are provided on their top faces with alternating grooves suitable'guard fingers for the plates. At the outer edges and adjacent each of two corners thereof each plate has formed integrally therewith a pair of blade retaining hooks I0 and l l as best shown in Figures 1 and 2. a
At their meeting edges the plates 1 and 8 are formed with depending aprons or flanges I2 and I3 and for maintaining the plates in alignment and to facilitate the adjustment of the plates relative to one another, one of the skirts or aprons, for example the apron l3 has extending therefrom, a pair of guide pins I4 which operate in suitable openings provided in the other of the skirts or aprons, namely the skirt or apron l2.
Secured to one of the skirts or aprons, in the present instance, the skirt or apron I3 is a handle l5 which has a flat shank portion riveted as at It to the skirt l3 as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
For adjusting the plates relative to one another and for securing the plates at the desired adjustment, there is provided an adjusting screw I! that extends through aligned openings in the plate I3 and shank of handle l5 and has threaded engagement with an opening in the skirt I2 as also clearly shown in Figure 3.
As indicated, a suitable single or double edge blade such as shown in Figure 4 and indicated by the reference numeral [8 may be placed in the holder resting on the guard plates 1 and 8 with opposite corner edge portions of the blade engaged under the hooks l0 and l l. Obviously by rotating the screw II, the plates 1 and 8 will be easily adjusted towardor away from one another as required by the width of the blade I8.
00 In connection with the above, it willbe apand ridges indicated generally at 9 to provide parent that by moving the plates 1 and 8 into close relation the blade 3 may be held in a transversely curved position. for use where a curved 'blade is desired.
It will be apparent that from the above, the razor can be cheaply and economically constructed, will accommodate blades of varying size, structure and make and will meet all the requirements of a safety razor of this character. Also, it will be noted that the improved blade I8 is imperforate, and being free of slots, apertures, and the like will have greater tensile strength and be more durable than the now existing safety razor blades.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a safety razor, a pair of complemental guard plates each provided adjacent one edge and at opposite corners with blade engaging means, said blades at their meeting edges being provided with depending skirts, guide fingers extending from one of said skirts and through openings in the other of said skirt for holding said plates in substantially the same plane to facilitate adjustment of the plates laterally rela- 25 tive to one another, and an adjusting screw extending through openings in said skirts having threaded engagement with one of the skirts for adjusting the guard plates and for securing said plates at the desired adjustment.
2. In a safety razor, a pair of complemental guard plates each provided adjacent one edge and at opposite corners with blade engaging means, said plates at their meeting edges being provided with depending skirts, guide fingers 35 extending from one of said skirts and through openings in the other of said skirts for holding said plates in substantially the same plane to facilitate adjustment of the plates laterally relative to one another, an adjusting screw extend- 0 ing through openings in said skirts having threaded engagement with one of the skirts for adjusting the guard plates and for securing said plates at the desired adjustment, and a handle member securedto the skirt of one of said plates. 45
'3. In combination, safety razor including a guard comprising'a pair of complemental individual and mutually separated plates, each provided with means for engaging an edge of a blade, inter-engageable means on said plates for maintaining said plates in substantially the same plane when said plates are relatively moved toward or away from one another, means for adjusting theplates relative to one another and for securing the plates at the desired adjustment,
and a blade comprising an imperforate body adapted to rest on said plates in either a flat or transversely curved condition.
