This invention relates generally to eyelash curlers wherein the upper fixed jaw and the lower movable or curling jaw cooperate in the same planein the crimpingor curling operation.

More specifically the invention relates to a type of eyelash curler described in United States Letters Patents; Nos. 1,699,084 and 1,904,575 and wherein provision is made for the removal of the operating pieee of the lowerand movable curling jaw of the curler above described.

The main object of the invention is the provision of a replaceable member adapted to cooperate with the lower movable or curling jaw such that the eyelash curler can be said to have a removable lower jaw for purposes of replacing the operative portions thereof resulting from wear and tear and destruction of the operative rubber member therein. a e I l Another object of theinvention is the provision of a lowermovable or" curling jaw capable of disassemblag'e for purposes of feeding new operative members to the said curler structure.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specificationand show a preferred form of the invention and a modified form thereof, and in which drawings corresponding reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

In accordance with the invention and in accordance with'the'preferred form and modification of said preferred form, the'curler. is provided with a supporting lever rigidly connected with the upper jaw and forms a support for the lower movable jaw, said supporting lever being constructed preferably of a. similar piece of wire doubled upon itself to form a lower or outer handle arm and an upper supporting arm. The lower arm of the supporting lever is provided with two longitudinal bars I 3 which are juxtaposed or arranged together and connected at their outer ends by a finger receiving loop l43l. The upper arm of the supporting lever is composed of two diverging side bars I5 which are offset vertically to form upward parallel portions ll.

Bars I! at the upper ends thereof are provided with a cross piece Ill to serve as the upper or curling jaw. The lower movable jaw is mounted on the upper arms or bars I! of the supporting lever so as to slide lengthwise thereon toward and from the fixed upper jaw ID. The lower movable jaw designated by numeral I l is comprised of a channel member having sleeves 19 at the opposite ends thereof, the said sleeves being slidably mounted on the g'uide bars I! of the supporting lever and operate to maintain the two jaws in parallelism with each other as the same are moved toward and from each other.

.It is to be observed that the curvature of fixed jaw l0 and movable jaw II is adapted to correspond with the curvature of the upper eyelid.

The movement of the lower movable jaw II is efiected preferably by an operating lever made from a'single piece of wire and doubled upon itself. The lower. or outer arm of this operating lever comprises two longitudinal bars 20 which. are juxtaposed and connected at their outer ends by means of a finger loop 2l'32, and two .upper or inner bars 22 which are also arranged close together or juxtaposed.

The upper and lower arms of the operating lever .are arranged at an angle relatively to each other so that the same as a whole has the form of an elbow lever and it is preferably pivotally connected with the supporting lever by inserting the operating lever between the two bars of the supporting lever and running arivet 23 horizontally and transversely throughout the several bars of the two levers at the point of crossing or intersection of the same as shown in Figures 1, 5, 7, and 8.

The essence of the invention herein resides in the-adaptation of the lower and movable jaw member such that the operative member thereof is removable and insertable by means bestdesignated by the expression cartridges. Inthe "form shown in Figures 16 inclusive, the lower jaw member H is of channel form and U shaped'preferably in cross section to admit the insertion therein of a cartridge l5 having outwardly extending and upper edge flanges it. The said cartridge member I6 is adapted to frictionally engage with the channel of the lower jaw H with the flanges l6 thereof superposing the upper edges of the channel H. The cartridge i6 is adapted to be removable" from channel it by engaging with the fingers the edges of the flanges l6 and bearing upward pressure.

The cartridge I6 being preferably of the same cross sectional contour as channel 'll,-is adapted to receive the rubber or elastic strip mem ii-er l2 having a central and longitudinal groove 52 on the upper face thereof with which groove the operative edge of the fixed jaw member ID cooperates in the crimping operation. It thus can be seen that a curler is provided having means to remove the operative portion of the i lowerjaw bodily from the curler and inserting a, new operative portion whenever necessary withoutthe necessity of disassembling the curler structure' v In' Figures 7,-11' inclusive, a modified form of alow'er jaw H is shown wherein the lower jaw is designated by numeral 33, the said lowerjaw 33not being connectedto and being short of Whenever it is desirable under this modified form to replace the elastic strip 36 having a longitudinal and central groove 36 on the upper face thereof, it is merely necessary'to uncurl curled portions of projecting strips 35 about the parallel bars I1.

It is to be noted that the projecting strips 35 are aflixed to the inner surface of the rear wall of cartridge member 34 by any known means such as soddering or brazing, it being understood that the said projecting strips 35 ,may be integral with and merely. extensions of the rear 'wallof the said cartridge 34. Except for these projecting strips 35, cartridge 34 is identical with cartridge [6, the elastic member in the -said cartridge 34 being equivalent to elastic member I2 of Figures 1-6 inclusive.

From the foregoing description, it can be seen that the cartridge idea as applied to United States Patents Nos. 1,699,084 and 1,904,575 virtually amounts to a transformation of the structure shown thereiniwherein the permanently attached and movable lower jaws become removable and replaceable as'respects the operative member thereof, to wit, the elastic or 'rubber strips l2 and 36. r

We'wish it understood that minor changes and variations in the shape, structure and integration of the several parts, together with relative positions thereof may all be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

We claim: v

' 1. Inan eyelash curler comprising two relative ly and vertically movable jaws curved to fit an eyelid and to receive eyelashes between them and wherein the upper jaw is provided with a lower operative edge, a lower jaw having an upwardly opening channel, a second channel member removably engageable with the said upward 1y opening channel; and a removable elas ic strip in said second channel member for engagement with the operative edge of the upper jaw.

In a device of the class described, the combination of an upper and a lower jaw, means for operating said jaws one with respect to the other, said lower jaw provided with a channel, a cartridge seated in said channel and provided on its upper edge with flanges, whereby the operator can grip said flanges and quickly remove said cartridge from saidchannel, and a yieldable strip in said cartridge.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a primary lever unit provided with an upper jaw; an auxiliary lever unit movably mounted on and cooperating with said primary lever unit, a lower jaw mounted on said auxiliary lever unit, a cartridge provided with projecting strips, said cartridge seated in said lower jaw, said projecting strips engaging portions of said primary lever unit, and yieldable means car ried by said cartridge.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a primary lever unit provided with an upper jaw, an auxiliary lever unit movably mounted on and cooperating with said primary lever unit, a lower channeled jaw between portions of said primary lever unit and mounted on said auxiliary lever unit, a cartridge provided at its ends with projecting strips, said strips around portions of said primary lever unit, whereby said lower jaw is secured in position, and a rubber strip seated in said cartridge.

8. In a device of the class described, the combination of a primary lever unit provided with an upper jaw, an auxiliary lever unit movably mounted on and cooperating with said primary lever unit, a lower channeled jaw positioned at its ends between portions of said primary lever unit and mounted on said auxiliary lever unit, a channeled cartridge seated in said lower channeled jaw, said cartridge having projecting strips extending outwardly in a vertical plane from the ends of the inner wall, said projecting strips bent around to form sleeves upon portions of said primary lever unit, and a flexible strip seated in the channel of said cartridge, substantially as shown and described.

9. In adevice of the class described, the combination of a primary lever unit provided with an upper jaw, an auxiliary lever unit pivotally mounted on said primary lever unit, said auxiliary lever unit including an upper elbow link having its upper and lower portions formed in two planes, whereby a more even thrust upwardly is obtained, and a lower jaw fastened to the upper end of said elbow link, substantially as shown and described.
