Description

July'21, 1936. l JR. NELSON 2,048,616
DOOR, CLOSER Filed Jan. 6, 1936 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented July 21, 1936 'UNITED s'ri'rs ,degradar orgies 4 Claims.
This invention relates to door closers and has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated character especially adapted to permit a person to open a door sufliciently for free egress and ingress to the doo-rway and to automatically close the door when released by the person.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means whereby the door may be swung to a full opened position or in substantial parallelism with the doorway or door jamb and to hold the door in said position until manually released.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a door closer of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and efficient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists in certain other novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of. my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating a door hinged to a door jamb with a closer applied thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view illustrating the door held in a full opened position by the closer.
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating an attaching bracket.
Figure 5 is a similar view of a pivoted arm of the closer.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicas a doorway o-r jamb having secured thereto by hinges 2, a door 3. An angle iron bracket 4 is secured to the door jamb I and is provided with spaced openings 5 either of which is adapted to receive the angularly related end 6 of a rod l. The rod 'I comprises a pair of sections pivotally connected as shown at 8. One section has the angularly related end 6 formed integral therewith while the other section has an angularly related end 9 to which one end of, a coiled spring I is attached and the other end of said spring is secured to one of the rails I I of the door 3 by a fastener I2. The spring III is retained on the end 9 of the rod 'I by a cotter key I3 while the end E of said rod is retained in one of the openings of the bracket 4 by a Cotter key I4.
A hook shaped guide I5 is secured to the rail II of the door 3 and adjacent to the hinged edge of said door so that on swinging the door toward an open position, the end 9 of the rod will engage the guide I5 and limit the movement of said door beyond the dotted line position shown in Figure 1. The door when in this positio-n is opened sufliciently to permit free egress or ingress of a person to the doorway and when the door is manually released from this position, the spring I 0 having been tensioned will draw the door to a closed position.
A Wear plate I6 is secured to the door 3 at its hinged edge for the rod 'I to work against during the opening and closing of the door.
When desiring to position the door in a full opened position o-r in parallelism with the door jamb as shown in Figure 3, the rod l is disengaged from the guide I5 and the rod l moves on its pivot 8 to the position shown in Figure 3 so that the tension on the spring will then hold the door against closing. It is to be noted that with this arrangement of door closer and closing means, the spring I0 does not drag against the hinged edge of the door when the latter is moved to open or closed positions thereby obviating any possibility of injuring the spring which is frequent when the spring is attached to the door and jamb and as now customarily employed.
By having the bracket 4 provided with a pair of openings permits the device to be applied to doors which are mounted to swing either left or right hand. v
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of. my invention, it is understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a door jamb anda hinged door, a rod pivoted to the jamb, a tension means between the rod and the door, and a combined guide and stop carried by the door for limiting the outward swinging movement of the door beyond a predetermined distance by engaging one end of the rod.
2. In combination with a door jamb and a hinged door, a rod pivoted to the jamb and having an angularly related end, a spring attached to said end and the door, and a hook shaped guideV carried by the door and slidably supporting the rod and adapted to limit the outward movement Y 'tions havinganangularlyY disposed end, a spring Y j of the door by engaging the vend of the rod.
2Y Y Y angularly disposed 3. In combination with a doorrj'amb YandaV Vhinged door, a bracket carriedby the jamb, a.
rod pivoted to the bracket and including a. pairY of sections p-ivotally connected, oneof said secsecured to the angulariy disposed endY of the rod Y and tothe door, Yand a hook shapedguide carried by the door and slidabiy supporting the rod for limiting the opening of, the-door, said rod being capable of being disengaged from the guide to permit the door to swing to a fully opened posi- Y tion andretained in said position by the action of Y l15VY the spring on the rod. Y
tached` to one end of the rod and to a hinged door, Va bracket pivoted to the other end of said rod and secured to a door jamb, a guide carried by'the door and slidably supporting the rod and adapted to have the rod'disengagedrtherefrom 4. Adoorcloser comprising a rod, a sprinrgat-A i when desiring to hold the door in a fully opened position, said rod including a. pair ofrsections pivfotally connected torpermt said sections to pivot relative to each-other when the door is in a. fully opened'position, and a Wear .plate carried by the Y door to be engaged by the rod when Vsaid sections *are pivoted relative to each other.
