Description

S. H. THURSTON. Tobacco-Pipe.
No'. 204,774. Patented June H, 1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SAMUEL H. THURSTON, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES T. PIERSON, OF RAMAPO, NEW YORK.
IM PROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,774, dated June 11, 1878 application filed March 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. THURsToN, of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new Improvements in Implements for Holding Tobacco in Smoking; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and true specification of my invention, reference being had to the drawin gs, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a tobaccopipe formed after my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a ciganholder in section.
In Fig. 1, the letter a indicates the interior or body of the pipe, formed of pumice-stone, and-the letter I) indicates a coating or covering of composition applied to the body, in the manner hereinafter specified.
In the same manner, in Fig. 2, the letter a indicates the body or interior of the cigarholder, and the letter b indicates the outside coating or covering of composition.
Letters Patent of the United States were formerly granted to me for the manufacture of pipes and cigar-holders of pumice-stone, in which I showed how such articles might be constructed with a lining or inside of that material; and my present improvement consists in manufacturing the pipes and holders of pumice-stone, with a covering or outside closely united to the stone. For this purpose I use for the covering some substance which can be applied to the stone in a soft or plastic condition, and will then harden and present the proper surface.
The material known as meerschaum chips can be used for this purpose, and a variety of other substances, such as compositions of magnesia, plaster-of-paris,chalk, or any substance which can be applied in the plastic condition, and will then harden and present the proper finish. The plastic material can be applied by a mold, or in any other way which suggests itself to those accustomed to handling such materials. The rough and porous surface of thestone readily receives the plastic material, and the union of the body and covering is so close that when a proper material is used and the composition pipe is treated with wax, it will color under the influence of nicotine as if composed of homogeneous materials.
Not confining myself to any particular substance for the covering,
I claim as my invent-ion- An implement for holding tobacco in smoking, having a body or interior of pumicestone, and a covering of some material applied to the pumice-stone in a plastic condition and afterward hardened, substantially as described.
SAML. H. THURSTON.
