7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Knnc, a subject of the German Emperor, and .resident of Frankfort-on-the-Main, Mainkur, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Abrading-Disk's, of which the following is a specification.
The article of manufacture forming the subject of this invention is a flat abrading disk. adapted to be cemented to a smooth metal disk and consists in known .manner of a layer of abrading material mounted on a foundation of fabric or the like. The usual abrading disks are produced by forming uniform thin disks of abrading material'on the foundation of fabric, paperand the like using one of the binding agents common in the production of abrading disks, such as magnesite and the like. These abrading disks have the disadvantage that the layers of abrading material adhere only. imperfectly to the foundation on account of the brittleness of the binding agents used. The layer is particularly sensitive to shocks and the disk cannot be used with water or other liquid, since the magnesite cement and the like used are very easily affected by moisture. The main disadvantage however consists in this that the abrading disks'so formed cannot be safely cemented on metal disks intended to be rotated at high speed. Moisture can pass through the porous layer of abrading material or through the porous foundation under certain conditions to the binding agent between the foundation and metal disk which adversely affects the adhesion, since for the sake of a speedy removal of the foundation secured to the abrading layer from the metal disk after use and for the sake of speedy cleaning of the metal disk only a binding agent soluble in water can be used.
The subject of the invention is a flat abrading disk which avoids the above mentioned disadvantages.

The caoutchouc cementhas as is known the property which is-a-dvantageous for the present purpose, that it does not react on the known binding agents of the abrading material and which is highly resilient. Thus the layer of cement f protects the usual easily soluble and pervious binding agent e between the fabric 7) and the metal disk d so that water or the like can be used in the abrading operation without hesitation and the 'sensitiveness to shocks of the abrading layer is thereby removed.
Instead of caoutchouc cement any other resilient cement with similar properties can be used such as for example gum or the like dissolved in chloroform.
Having described my invention what I claim anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 7 1.
