Description
S. B. THOMAS. Hog-Weighing Device.
No. 204,633. Patented June 4,1878.
INVENTORS @5.
" M .lltznrms N-FETERS. PKOTO-LITHGGRAPHER WASHmfTON u C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. THOMAS, OF AROANUM, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOG-WEIGHING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,633, dated June 4, 1878; application filed April 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. THOMAS, of Arcanum, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Scalding and Weighing Hogs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for scalding and weighing hogs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my inventionf Fig. 2 represents an attachment for the same.
A represents a suitable base of any construction, from the center of which rises a post or standard, B. From this post or standard project a series of horizontal arms, 0 O, to form a rack for hanging up the hogs. In the upper end of the post or standard is a swiveled headblock, D, having a vertical slot or mortise through it, and in the same is pivoted a lever, E, upon the long end of which is placed a movable poise or weight, F. From the smaller end of the lever are suspended two hangers, G G, in the outer one G of which is hung a scalebeam, H. The outer end of this scale-beam is provided with hooks a a, on which to hang the hog, while the inner end of the scale-beam passes through the hanger G, and hasits movement limited thereby. I is the poise or weight on the scale-beam H for weighing.
While weighing, the lever E is held stationary by means of a pin, 12, through the headblock D.
For scalding the hogs, a furnace, J, is placed on the base A, and a large pot, L, is placed in the furnace for heating the water. The pin b is removed from the head-block D, so that it can be turned to raise and lower the hog, as required, the poise or weight F facilitating such movement, it aiding in balancing the hog. When scalded, the hog is raised and then swung around away from the furnace, and easily suspended from the rack 0.
Farmers can use this apparatus for weighing grain and other articles, for which purpose a box, M, with bails N N, is provided.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the standard B, with rack O, the swiveled head-block D, lever E, with poise F, hangers G G, and scale-beam H, with poise I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL B. THOMAS.
