HOLDER FOR LIP STICKS OR THE LIKE Filed Nov. 5, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 F1g.E|.
Patented June 9, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 Claims.
My invention relates to holders for cosmetics in stick form, and particularly for lipsticks.
The primary object of my invention is to providea simple arrangement of holder for lipsticks or the like, which ejects the stick from the holder into a position for use with a single easy movement of the hand.
While such devices have heretofore been made, the present arrangement is provided with means which will prevent the holder from opening accidentally, and yet will permit easy manual operation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a lipstick holder having a cover, in which movement of the cover ejects the lipstick into a position for use. More particularly, the in vention contemplates an arrangement of this type in which the cover moves down the side of the container so as to provide a somewhat wider device adapted for easier holding by the user when the lipstick is being applied.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear more fully from the following description particularly when taken in conjunction with the following drawings which form a part thereof.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view with parts broken away of a device according to my invention in partly open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar View of the device in fully open position.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device in the position shown in Fig. 2 with parts broken away.
Fig. 5 is a cross section substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a vertical cross section through the device in closed position.
Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
Figs. 9 and. 10 are cross sections on the lines 99 and lll-lll respectively of Fig. 7.
The holder according to my invention comprises a container having afront wall 2, side walls 4 and a rear wall 6, this container being open at its top. Preferably the container has the shape of an elongated rectangle, in general similar to the shape of the usual lipstick. The upper portion of the rear wall 6 of the container is provided with two slots 8 at either side thereof extending from the top edge of this wall downwardly to or past the center thereof, leaving therebetween a tongue [0. The purpose of these slots will be explained below.
Within the container is arranged a tube-like member l2 of slightly smaller outer dimensions than the inner dimensions of the container, and of substantially the same height. The side walls of the member l2 are each'provided witha horizontal slot l4. The rear wall of the tube-like member i2 is secured by screws IE to the rear wall 6 of the container. The width of the memher [2 is substantially equal to the width of the tongue Ill between the slots 8, and the outer surfaces of the side walls of member [2 are aligned with the inner edges of these slots. From the front wall of the member l2 adjacent the top thereof are struck out two members to form a tongue or stop l8, the purpose of which will be described below.
Slidably fitting in the tube-like member I2 is a holding member in which may be'secured a rod-like portion 22 of lipstick or any other ma terial. This member 20 is provided in each side wall and below the portion which grips the lipstick with inclined or diagonal slots 24. The horizontal length of each of these slots is substantially equal to the length of the slots M.
An operating member 26 is slidable on the outside of the tube-like member I2, within the space between the walls of such tube-like member and the walls of the container. Member 26 has side walls 28 and a front wall 30. The front wall 30 connects the bottom portions of the side walls 28, but is cut away at the front. Theside walls 28 are provided at their'upper end with an up-- ward and rearward extension 32 on which is pivoted at 34 a cover 36, this cover being of such a size as to fit on the upper end of the container. The projecting portions 32 are in alignment with the slots 8 in the rear wall 6 of the container. Thus the member 28 may be moved up and down in the container, with the projections 32 traveling in the slots 8.
Each side wall 28 of the member 26 is provided with a slot having a lower vertical portion 38 located on the opposite side from the lower end of slot 24 and a diagonal portion 40 extending transversely to the slot 24. A pin 42 is arranged to pass through the slots I4, 24 and 48. This pin acts as a force transmitting member so that upon upward or downward movement of the member 26, pin 42 will be shifted laterally in slot l4 because of the cam action of the inclined slot 48, and will impart vertical movement to holding member 28 because of the inclined slot 24. It is thus evident that if the cover is pushed side ward and downward from the position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 6 the holding member 20 will be 'raised and the lipstick will" be ejected into a position for use. The length of the portion of the lipstick which is brought "out of the contain-er may be easily determined by varying the movement of the cover.
In order to prevent accidental opening of the cover, means are provided to hold the same resiliently in closed position. A spring operating or engaging member-43 is arranged between the front wall of the tube-like member I2 and the front wa1l'2 of the container. The member 43 consists'of a trough shaped element having a tongue 44 struck inwardly in the lower portion thereof," and a flange 45 at'its topv above the tongue 18 to limit its downward movement. The
member 43 is arranged to overlie and enclose the tongue l8 on the front wall of member I2. A coil compression spring 46 is arranged within the;
trough-like member 43 between the tongues l8 7 and 44. a o
The front wall of the member 26 is so dimensioned that as the member 26 approaches its raised position wall 30 will engage the lower 'end' 1 of trough-like member 43. When the cover is in closed position, spring 46 is slightly compressed in this fashion. Any attempt to raise the cover imparts'a slight upward movement to the member 26because the cover tends to hinge about its lower rear edge and thus to raise the pivot 34 at the same time to tilt the member 28 backward.
' This lifts the front edge of the member 28 and thereby compresses the spring 46 still further. In otherwords, in order'to raise the cover it is necessary to overcome the pressure of spring 46. The spring therefore tends to hold the cover in closed I position and prevents accidental opening of the holder. As soon, howeven-as the cover has been opened'and starts to move downwardly, the pressure of spring 46 is entirely released and the device may be moved freelytand held in any desired position without the resistance of any spring. r r
While I' have described herein one embodiment of myinvention, I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself thereby except within the scope of the appended claims.
