Description
May 12, 1936. c. MAGUIRE COMBINATION FAUCET AND DRINKING FOUNTAIN Filed April 26, 1955 Patented May 12, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION FAUCET AND DRINKING FOUNTAIN 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination faucet and drinking fountain, the prime object of which is to provide a novel device of the character stated which will be effective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object is to provide a novel combination mixing faucet and drinking fountain so arranged that water of different temperatures may be mixed but only the cold water can be admitted to the drinking fountain.
A feature of my invention is the novel needle valve in the drinking fountain duct whereby the quantity of water admissible to the fountain is controlled.
Another feature is the novel tapered regulating cock and a means to prevent pressure from building up between the body of the valve and the cock.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I indicates the valve body, and 2, the drinking fountain bowl which is integrally formed with the body I. The bowl 2 is elongated substantially as shown, the water entering at one side and draining from the other, as will be subsequently described.
The body I is provided with a cold water intake 3 and a hot water intake 4. Suitable pipe fittings, which are usual and well known, extend to the intakes 3 and 4 for the purpose of conducting water thereto. If desired, valves 5 and 6 of usual and well known design may be provided in the intakes 3 and 4, respectively, for the purpose of controlling the quantity of water which enters said intakes. These valves may or may not be provided with handles, as desired. That is, the handles may be eliminated and the valves set at the points desired.
An outlet spout I is integrally formed with the body I, and the water from either or both of the inlets 3, 4 flows therethru. A tapered cock 8 fits closely within the bore 9 in the body I. A detachable cover plate I closes the bore 9 and also holds the cock 8 in position. This cover plate is held in position by a plurality of machine screws, or the like. A stem I I extends from the cock 8 thru the plate I0, and a control handle I2 is attached to the stem. The control handle rotates the cock 8 into various positions, as will be further described.
A spring pressed detent I3 mounted in the handle I2 will hold this handle in the various positions to permit water to flow to various positions, such as to the spout 1, or the fountain 2. The cock 8 is provided with a transverse bore I4. A second bore I extends from the bore I4 and this last named bore is adapted to communicate with the spout I to permit water to pass into said spout. By rotating the cock 8, the bore I4 can be brought into registry with either or both of the inlets 3, 4. When the bore is registering with both of the inlets, a mixture of hot and cold water is provided. The cock can also be adjusted to admit only hot or cold water to the spout.
A small an-gularly extending duct I6 is provided in the cock 8 for the purpose of admitting water from the cold water intake 3 to the drinking fountain. A duct I! in the body I extends to one side of the bowl 2 and is directed longitudinally of the bowl so as to be available for drinking purposes. A control valve I8 in the duct I6 restricts the passage in the duct to the degree desired so that the proper amount of water will flow thru this duct and to the drinking fountain.
A vertical drain hole I9 extends from the bottom of the bowl 2 and thru the body I to discharge any excess water which flows into the bowl 2. The discharge I9 is at the opposite end of the bowl from the intake end is lower so that all of from the bowl.
A multi-fingered spring loosely encircles the stem II and is positioned between the cock 8 and the cover I0, thus pressing the cock into the body. Due to the tapered construction of the cook, the possibilities of leakage are prevented and also any wear is automatically compensated for. A bleed hole 2| extends from top to bottom thru the cock 8 for the purpose of equalizing the pressure on both sides of the cock and preventing the accumulation of water under pressure at the bottom of the cock, tending to unseat the same.
Having described my invention, I claim:

2. A combination mixing faucet and drinking,
fountain comprising a body, a pair of oppositely disposed intake passages in the body, a spout formed on the body, a conical cock seated in the body, a removable plate attached to the body and extending over the cock whereby the cock is held on its seat, a transverse bore extending thru the cock, said transverse bore being adapted to be selectively brought into registry with either of the intake passages of the body, a second bore in the cock extending from the first named bore, said second bore registering with the spout in the body, an angular duct in the'cock, said duct being adapted to be brought into registry with only one of the intake passages, a fountain bowl integrally formed on the body, a passage in the body extending to thefountain bowl, said angular duct being adapted to be brought into registry with the last named passage, said body having a drain hole extending from the drinking bowl said drain hole being independent of the spout, a handle attached to the conical cock, and a bleed hole extending thru the cock, said bleed hole equalizing the water pressure on the top and bottom of thecock to prevent unseating thereof, and a' spring bearing against the cock and forcing same into its seat, said passage extending to the fountain bowl, entering the bowl at one side thereof,
and the drain hole being on the other side of the bowl.
