My invention relates to improvements, in dishwashing apparatus, an object thereof being to supply a simple, durable and effective apparatus of such nature adapted to be readily applied to the hot and cold water pipes leading to a sink and toprovide a spray either of clear water or suds varying in temperature, as may be desired, from that of the waterin the cold-water pipe to that of the water in the hot water pipe and varying in pressure up to the maximum of that afforded by the water in said pipes.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the present nature, including a receptacle having a closed soap chamber adapted v to receive clear water and discharge soapy water.

Referring to the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters are employed to designate similar parts throughout .the several views, it will be seen that the illustrated embodi- 10 ment of my invention includes a receptacle l0 mounted upon and connected with branch feed pipes ll, l2, respectively coupled with hot water and cold water feed pipes l3, [4, leading through the back board ii of a sink and supplying water 15 to a combined hot and cold water faucet l6 having a pivoting spout ll. The branch feed pipe l2 includes a control valve I8 which is screwed into a T-coupling or adapter l9 interposed between the end of the cold water pipe l4 and the faucet 2 I6. Likewise, the branch feed pipe ll includes a control valve screwed into a T-coupling or adapter similar tothe T-coupling l9, such valve being interposed between the end of the hot water pipe l3 and the faucet [6. Each of said valves I8, 20, has a lever 2i for opening and closing the same and for regulating the flow of water 'therethrough from its respective water pipe.
A coupling 22 connects the branch 'feed pipes ll, l2, with a valve housing 23 formed integrally v anchored in the body of the receptacle [0 provide bearings for the ends of a. pivoting yoke 29 through which is fitted a threaded clamping screw 30 having a finger piece 3|. The inner end of this clamping screw 30 is received in a depression 32 formed in the closure 24 axially thereof, said closure being removably clamped against the sealing gasket 21 by means of said clamping screw 33. With the closure 24 removed from the body of the receptacle l0, cakes or slabs of soap may be introduced from the .top into the soap chamber 33 within said receptacle, but with said closure 24 clamped in place, the chamber 33 is tightly sealed at the upper portion. of the receptacle.

thrust plug 31 is a compression spring 39 into the inner end of which is fitted a thrust head 40. This thrust head 40 and said valve plug 35 are formed with opposed depressions 41, 42, which receive opposite portions of a thrust ball 43, the action of said compression spring 39, thrust head 40 and thrust ball 43 being to maintain a tight fit between the valve tuning of said valve plug. Secured to the small end of the tapered valve plug 35 is a handle 44 for turning said plug. This handle 44 is secured to the plug 35 by means of a fastening screw 45 passing through 'said handle and threaded into said plug, relative rotation between handle and plug being precluded by means of a key-pin 46 accommodated at its inner end in a bore 41 in said plug 35 and at its outer end in a bore 48 in said handle. The valve plug 35 has a diametrical bore 49 therein and at one side thereof a circumierentially extending channel 50. At the other side of said diametrical bore 49, said valve plug 35 is formed with a longitudinally extending channel 5|.
The valve casing 23 is formed with a feed port 52 into which the coupling 22 is threaded. In line with said feed port and formed in the bottom of the receptacle 10 is an inlet port 53. Said feed port 52 and said inlet port 53 are brought into communication for conducting water from the into the soap chamber 33 within the receptacle Ill. To thus bring said feed port 52 and inlet port 53 into communication, the valve plug 35 is turned into a suds position, wherein the diametrical bore 49 in said plug registers with said feed port 52 and inlet port 53 (Fig. 3). The said casing 23 is additionally formed with a delivery port 54 into which the coupling member 55 of a spray tube 56 is threaded and said casing is further formed with an outlet port 51 in the bottom of the receptacle I9, said outlet port 51 and said delivery port 54 being brought into communication in the suds" position of the valve plug 35 through the circumferentially extending channel 50 in said valve plug 35. The tubular outlet extension 58 issues from the outlet port 51 at an angle to the axis of the soap receptacle l0 and occupies a position closely adjacent to the sloping wall surface of said receptacle chamber, whereby the pieces of soap within the receptacle are not interfered with by said extension 58 in their descent in the receptacle chamber to position above the inlet port 53. In said "drain" position of the valve plug 35, the diametrical bore 49 therein registers with the delivery port 54 and also with a drain port 6ll.formed in the bottom of the soap receptacle 10. Any water contained in said receptacl'e drains therefrom through said drain port 50, diametrical bore 49 in valve plug 35, and delivery port 54 into the spray tube 56. This drainage of the water from the soap receptacle I0 is initially enhanced by such air as may be trapped under pressure in the upper portion of the soap chamber 33 in receptacle l0. Subsequently, and when this air becomes of the same pressure as that of the atmosphere, air from the outside is admitted into the receptacle chamber 33 through the outlet extension 58 so that the drainage from the receptacle may continue unimpeded. To provide for the admission of air into the interior of the receptacle chamber 33, an air ingress port Si is formed in the valve casing 23. This port Bl communicates with the outlet port 51 through the longitudinally extending channel in the valve plug 35, said air port 6| being supplied with a valve cage 62 in which ,a ball check 63 is contained, said ball check operating to prevent the escape of air and/or water through said air port 61, but permitting the ingress of air therethrough.
Fixed to the front of valve housing 23 is a plate 64 bearing the designations suds, "clear and drain with reference to which the handle 44 of the valve plug 35 is turned to supply soapy water or clear water through the spray tube 58. or to drain the soap receptacle through said tube. Any suitable nozzle may be provided at the end of the spray tube, such as that shown in detail in Fig. 8 and designated by the numeral 65. This nozzle includes a tubular handle 56, in'which the terminal portion of the spray tube 56 is contained, said tube being connected with a nipple G1 issuing from a body 68 threaded within said handle 66. A head 59 formed with fine spray forming perforations 19 and threaded on the body 68 clamps a cup-shaped scraper member 11 between it and the end of said handle 66.
When the valve plug 35 is turned into its .suds" position, after the receptacle has been drained, water from one or the other or both of the branch feed pipes ll, 12, according to the adjustment of the valves 2| insaid pipes, enters the receptacle through the-feed and inlet ports 52, 53, and the diametrical bore 49 in said plug, the air within said receptacle chamber 33 being driven out of the same through the spray tube 56 until the level of the water in said receptacle seals the perforations 59 in the tubular outlet extension 58. The
lating in the receptacle chamber 33, being added under the pressure of the air trapped in the upper portion of said chamber. Thus, it will be seen that by locating the perforations 59 in the tubular outlet extension 58 at an elevation substantially above the bottom of the receptacle chamber 33, a substantially greater amount of water is provided within the receptacle for contact with the soap therein than wouldbe prb-' vided were the outlet from the receptacle chamber to be sealed immediately upon the initial influx of water into said chamber. This provision, wherein a substantial quantity of water is at all times subjected to the soap, contained in the thefspirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect'by Letters Patent is:
1. Apparatus of the character described comprising a receptacle forming a mixing chamber and having an opening therein for the introduction of soap into-said chamber, a closure for said opening, said receptacle having a valve casing at the base thereof, a valve plug fitted in said casing and adapted to be turned, selectively, into any one of three positions, one a "suds position, another a clear" position, and a third a drain position, said valve plug being formed with a diametrical bore therein, a circumferentially extending channel and a longitudinally extending channel, said casing having a feed port, an inlet port leading to said chamber, an outlet port leading from said chamber, and a delivery port, said feed port communicating with said inlet port through the bore in said plug and said outlet port communicating with said delivery port through said circumferential channel "in the suds position of said plug, said casing having a drain port leading from said chamber and communicating with said delivery port through said bore in said plug and having an air inlet port bringing the chamber into communication with the outer atmosphere through said outlet port and said longitudinal channel in said drain position of the plug, a check valve in said air inlet port, said feed port communicating with said delivery port through said circumferential channel in said clear position of said plug.

Apparatusof the character described comprising a receptacle forming a mixing chamber and having an opening therein for the introduction of soap into said chamber, a closure for said opening, said receptacle having a valve casing at the base thereof, a'valve plug fitted in said casing and adapted to be turned into a "suds.
ber, and a delivery port, said feed port communicating with said inlet port through the bore in said plug and said outlet port communicating with said delivery port through said circumferential channel in the "suds position of said plug, said casing having a drain port leading from said chamber and communicating with said delivery port through said bore in said plug and having an air inlet port bringing the chamber through said outlet poit'and said longitudinal channel in said drain position of the plug, and a check valve in said air inlet port.
3. Apparatus of the character described comprising a receptacle providing a closed soap chamber therein, said receptacle having a valve casing incorporated in the base thereof, a rotatable valve plug in said casing, said casing and plug providing a feed passageway for conducting water into said chamber and a delivery passageway for conducting soapy water therefrom in one position of said plug in said casing, and providing a passageway for water by-passing said soap chamber in another position of said plug in said casing, and providing a drain passageway leading irom the soap chamber and an air admission passageway leading into said'chamher from the outside in a third position of said plug in said casing. y

Apparatus of the character described comprising a receptacle providing a closed soap chamber therein, said receptacle having a valve casing incorporated in the base thereof, a rotatable valve plug in said casing, said casing and plug providing a feed passageway fdr conducting water into said chamber at the bottom thereof and a delivery passageway for conducting soapy water therefrom in one position of said plug in said casing, said delivery passageway including a conduit opening ,into the interior of said chamber above the point of ingress of water thereto, whereby a substantial quantity of air maybe displaced from the chamber by a similar quantity of water accumulating therein before said delivery passageway is sealed against the further displacement of such air by additional water accumulating in said chamber, said casing and plug providing a drain passageway leading from the soap chamber and an air admission passageway leading into said chamber from the outside in another position of said plug in said.

5. Apparatus of the character described comprising a receptacle providing a closed soap chamber therein, said receptacle having a valve into communication with the outer atmosphere casing incorporated in the base thereof, a rotatable valve plug in said casing, said casing and plug providing a feed passageway for conducting water into said chamber at the bottom thereof and a delivery passageway for conducting soapy water therefrom in one position of said plug in said casing, said delivery passageway including a conduit formed with perforations therein opening into the interior of said chamber at different levels, the lowermost level being above the point of ingress of water into said chamber, whereby a substantial. quantity of air may be displaced from the chamber by a similar quantity of water accumulating therein before said delivery passageway is sealed against the further displacement of such air by additional water accumulating in said chamber, said casing and plug providing a connection'between said feed and delivery passageways by-passing said soap chamber in another position of said plug in said casing, and providing a drain passageway leading from the soap chamber and an air admission passageway leading into said chamber from the outside in a third position of said plug in said casing.
6., Apparatus of the character described comprising a receptacle forming a mixing chamber and having an opening therein for the introducall) tion of soap into said chamber, a closure for said opening, said receptacle having a valve casing at the base thereof, a valve plug fitted in said'cas-- ing and adapted to be turned, selectively..into any one of three positions, one a "su position, another a clear position, and a third a drain position, said valve plug diametrical bore therein, a circumferentially extending channel and a' longitudinally extending channel, said casing having a feed port, an inlet port leading into said chamber at the bottom thereof, an outlet port leading from said chamber and open to the interior thereof at an elevation above said inlet port, and a delivery port, said feed port communicating with said inlet port through the bore in said plug and said outlet port communicating with said delivery port through said circumferential channel in the suds position of said plug, said feed port communicating with said delivery port through said circumferential channel in said clear position of said plug, said casing having a drain port leading from said chamber at the bottom thereof and communicating with said delivery port through said bore in said plug and having an air inlet port bringing the chamber into communication with the outer atmosphere through said outlet port and said longitudinal channel in said-drain position of the plug, said plug in said drain position serving to obstruct said feed port.

Apparatus of the character described comprising a receptacle forming a mixing chamber and having an opening therein for the introduction of soap into said chamber, a closure for said opening, said receptacle having a valve casing at the base thereof, a valve plug fitted in said casing and adapted to be turned, selectively, into a suds" position and a drain position, said valve plug being formed with a diametrical bore therein, a circumferentially extending channel and a longitudinally extending channel, said casing having a feed port, an inlet port leading into said chamber at the bottom thereof, an outlet port leading from said chamber, and a delivery port, said feed port communicating with said inlet port through the bore in said "plug and said outlet port communicating with said delivery port through said circumferential channel in the suds position of said plug, said casing having being formed with a a drain port leading from said chamber and communicating with said delivery port through said bore in said plug and having an air inlet port bringing the chamber into communication .with the outer atmosphere thrgugh said outlet port and said longitudinal channel in said drain position of the plug, said plug in said drain position serving to close said feed'port.
8. In apparatus of the character described, a closed receptacle providing a mixing chamber, a ported valve casing communicating with said chamber through ports including a liquid inlet, an air inlet, and a liquid outlet, and a ported rotatable valve plug in the valve casing, said casing and plug, in one position of the latter within the former, providing a passageway opening said liquid inlet for the feeding of liquid to said receptacle and opening the outlet for the delivery of the liquid from said receptacle, said casing and plug, in a second position of the latter within the former, providing a passageway establishing direct communication between the liquid inlet and outlet by-passing said mixing chamber, said casing and plug, in a third position of the latter within the former, closing said liquid inlet and providing two passageways, one thereof opening said outlet for draining liquid from said receptacle, and the other thereof opening said air inlet for the admission of air into said receptacle to facilitate drainage thereof.
9. In apparatus of the closed mixing receptacle, a ported valve casing communicating with said receptacle through ports including a liquid inlet, an air inlet and a liquid outlet, a ported rotatable valve plug in the .valve casing, said casing and plug, in one position of the latter within the former, providing a passageway opening saidliquid inlet for the feeding of liquid tq said receptacle and opening the outlet for the delivery of liquid from said receptacle, said casing and plug, in another position of the latter within the former, closing said liquid inlet and providing two passageways, one thereof opening said outlet for draining liquid from said receptacle, and the other thereof opening said air inlet for the admission of air into said receptacle to facilitate drainage thereof.
