IMPROVEMENT IN RUBBER POCKET-STAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,021 dated May 21, 1878; application filed I March 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYDNEY W. GARRISON, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Stamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification,-in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section with the platen housed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the housing withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a perthe type side out ready for use.
The improvement consists in combining a spring-seated receding housing or case containing an inking-pad with a pivoted and rewhen the housing is drawn back the bed may from contact with the inking-pad into position for use, in which position it is maintained rigid upon its pivots by the pressure of its housing upon its rear side, the said bed being reversed and its type housed by a similar movement of the housing when it is no longer required for use.
In the drawing, A represents the housing, open throughout its entire length upon one side, and having in the bottom thereof an inking-pad, a. This housing, which is preferably made of sheet metal, is provided with tubular sleeves b b at its ends, which sleeves encompass and slide upon the parallel rods or wires 0 0, so as to be guided and supported thereby. These arms are rigidly attached in the rear to the sleeve B, and have pivoted to their extremities the .type bed 0, a spiral spring, D, being seated between the sleeve B and housing A, to hold the latter against the bed. Said bed has one side thereof reduced sufliciently in transverse direction to enter the opening of the housing, and has upon this side the type d, while the other side is' wider, so that when the type is turned outwardly said housing abuts against the rear side of the same, to hold the bed stiffly when print- In constructing the device, the sleeve B is designed to adapt it to be placed upon the end of a pencil or pen; but said sleeve may be fashioned into any suitable form of handle.
In affixing the type, also, I contemplate using a molded rubber type, formed with the desired impression and-secured to the bed; but I may construct the bed so as to receive separate and independent type, either of rubber or metal, without departing from the principle of my invention.
To facilitate the withdrawal of the springseated housing, knobs or projections f are formed upon the same.
In hanging the bed, it will be seen that its pivots are closer to the rear side of the bed. This makes the type side the heavier, and when the housing is drawn back allows the type to adjust itself, from gravity, either with its face outwardly for service, or inwardly to the pad, according to the position in which the device is held. This, it will be seen, dispenses with the necessity of touching the inked type, and obviates the soiling of the fingers.
I am aware of the fact that a hand-stamp has heretofore been constructed which was provided with a socket which adapted it to be fitted upon a lead-pencil, and in which ahousing containing an inking-pad was hinged to fold over the type, to bring the inking-pad in contact therewith, to keep it always inked and protected from dirt, and allow it to be carried in the pocket without soiling the clothing or wearing its type-faces. When the housing is opened and folded to one side, however, the manipulation of the device is rendered more or less awkward.
With my device it will be seen that I secure all the advantages possessed by the arrangement just described, and preserve the concentric arrangement of the housing and bed for both positions without the objection involved in the folding of the housing to one side.
I am also aware that a hand-stamp has been provided with a reversible or pivoted typebed, and with an ink-pad affixed to and supported by a frame, in which the bed slides up and down when the stamp is in use, the bed being rotated or reversed in such movement by means of a device in the nature of a segmental gear and rack.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I ment .to apencil or other handle, the arms "'0 claim as new is- 0, attached thereto, the housing havingslee es 1.
