The subject matter of the present invention has to do with a device for holding cosmetics. More speciiically the subject matter of this invention is directed to and concerned with an improved cosmetic holding device embodying a retainer adapted to disconnectably sustain a variety of sizes of lipsticks. In one aspect, the invention contemplates the provision of a cosmetic receiving device comprising a casing hingedly and removably carrying a lipstick holder having adjustable retaining means. In another aspect, the cosmetic receiving and holding device according to the invention comprises a lipstick retainer having a complementary stationary gripping member and a cooperating shiftable spring actuated gripping member. In another aspect, the invention has to do with improvements of general application to and utility in cosmetic receiving and holding devices of other types than herein specically disclosed. As another aspect of the invention, the cosmetic receiving device is simple and rugged in construction and is designed to present an attractive and pleasing appearance and although the novel features characterizing the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its other aspects, features and advantages, the mode of its operation and the manner of its organization may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof in which Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of a lipstick holder or cosmetic receiving device according to the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the cosmetic receiving device is generally designated I 0. In the form according to Fig. 1 the compact receiving device comprises an irregularly shaped casing, broadly denoted I I to which the lipstick holder generally indicated I2 is hingedly and swingably sustained. As shown, casing II is a one piece hollow body having a closed inverted dome shaped bottom and an open top, One end I3 of the body is expanded and provides a substantially conically shaped chamber receiving the lipstick or cosmetic instrumentality I4. The other end I5 of the body is relatively reduced and constitutes a rectangularly shaped pocket or chamber I'I adapted to receive one part I E of the lipstick holder I2. The expanded part I3 of the casing presents a relatively smooth curved contour which gradually and progressively merges with the rectilinear sides of the reduced part of the casing.

According to the invention, the lipstick holder I2 comprises a rectangularly shaped shell or enclosure I8 within which a spring actuated manually adjustable and shiftable block I9 is slidably guided and sustained. This block I9 is slidably held within the shell I8 by reason of the inwardly turned marginal iianges 20 and 2l. Block I9 is provided With a suitable bore 22 adapted to receive the major portion of a helicoidal spring 23, the latter having one end abutting an end wall of the bore and another end thereof bears against a rectilinear face 24 of a terminal cam shaped protuberance 25 integrally associated with a shell or frame I8.

Integral with frame I8 is a terminal lip portion 26 to which is appropriately and iiXedly secured an arcuately formed retaining member 21 having the spaced prongs 28 extending laterally with respect to lip portion 2B. An arcuately shaped retaining member 29 is also i'lxedly carried by the movable block I9. Retaining member 29 includes a plurality of spaced prongs 30. It follows therefore that retaining member 29 is movable with respect to the stationary retaining member 2l, these members constituting complementary parts between which the lipstick is held in proper position for use, the prongs serving to penetrate into the body of the lipstick. The complementary retaining members, as shown have a curved form. The invention, however, is not limited to thisyform for obviously, it is within the teachings of the present disclosure that the complementary retaining members may have any contour according to the shape of the lipstick to be held, such as to sustain lipsticks having an oval or polygonal section.

The lipstick holder carries at one end a fulcrum pin 3| having its ends pivotally mounted on and fastened to the spaced sides 32 and 33 of the casing II, which sides are adapted to frictionally and removably embrace the spaced sides 34 and 35 of frame I8 when the latter is swung to a closed position and in this position the lip portion 26 is also in part frictionally embraced by the inwardly sloping face 36 of the recessed inwardly turned stop wall 31 interconnecting sides 32 and 33 of the casing, there being a slight protuberance 38 projecting beyond the stop wall 31, the protuberance serving as means whereby the holder may be readily opened, as is well understood.

In Fig. 1, a lipstick is secured by the complementary retaining members 21 and 29. If it be assumed that this stick is about used up and it is desired to replace it by a new stick, the operator may quickly open the casing by applying nger pressure against the projection 38. The holder is then swung on the fulcrum 3l, placing it in a position as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5.

A finger nail of the operator is then disposed within the indent 39 of the block I9 and the latter is bodily moved in a direction towards the fulcrum pin and against the energy of spring 23, thus casing the gap between the retaining members to increase and consequently the lipstick may be quickly removed. Subsequently, a new lipstick may be inserted and upon release of block I9 on the part of the operator, the prongs of the complementary members enter the sides of the lipstick or pencil and hold the latter in proper position for use. By the use of a movable retaining member according to the invention various sizes of lipsticks having various types of cross section may be held between the complementary members.

In the form according to Fig. 6, the cosmetic receiving device is identical to the construction according to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive except that in Fig. 6, the lipstick holder is also disconnectable with respect to the casing, that is to say, fulcrum pin 3| is pivoted in suitably alined bayonet slots 40 formed in the sides of the reduced part of the casing I I.

In the forms disclosed in Figs. 1 to 6, the holder may be held in an intermediate position with respect to its closed and open position. To this end, the'bottom wall of the restricted part I5 of casing I I is provided with spaced striations 42 forming an intervening spring 43 which cooperates with and abuts the arcuate cam face 44 of the enlarged terminal 25 of frame I8.

According to the form disclosed in Figs. 7 and 8, the compact receiving device comprises a substantially rectangularly shaped casing 44 having a plurality of compartments, such as, a lipstick compartment45,a powder compartment 46 and a rouge compartment 41. A hingedly connected cover 48 serves as a closure for the powder compartment. This cover carries a mirror 49. Frictionally cooperating clasps as 50 may be utilized to hold cover 48 closed. A cover 5I swingably carried by and disconnectably associated with casing 44 is employed as a closure for the rouge compartment 41. However, the lipstick holder I2 is of the type shown in connection with the earlier form illustrated in Fig. 6, that is, disconnectably and swingably associated with its casing and as in the case of the form shown in Fig. 6, the lipstick holder according to Fig. 7 also includes a projection as 38 to open the lipstick holder.

With the modification illustrated in Figs. 9, 10, the cosmetic receiving device has a cylindrical casing provided with a plurality of compartments, such as, a powder compartment 52, a rouge compartment 53 and a lipstick compartment 54. The powder compartment is formed by a cup shaped member which is hinged at 55 and has its rim frictionally and disconnectably associated with an annular bead 56. Access to the rouge compartment may be had by swinging reiiector 51 on its hinges 58. The lipstick holder of Figs. 9 and l0 is identical to the construction shown in Fig. 7 and is swingably and disconnectably held in alined bayonet slots formed in the casing.

The cosmetic receiving device shown in Figs. l1 and 12 is of the type shown in Figs. 1 and 6 except that in Figs. l1 and 12 the removable circular and flanged top or closure 60 bodily carries the lipstick holder I2. In Figs. 9 and 10, the lipstick holder is disconnectable with respect to the top wall of the casing.

In Fig. 13, which is a View taken on the line I3-I3 of either Figs. 9 or 11, it will be noted that the swingable reflector or mirror 51 is prevented from being accidentally opened by reason of the resilient protuberance as 66, these members being struck out of the annular bead 56. If closed, the hinged reflector 51 may be readily opened by a ringer nail of the operator by pulling downwardly against the curved edge of the cut away portion 65.

While certain preferred embodiments of the invention have been shown and described, it will be understood that changes in the form, arrangements, proportions, sizes and details thereof may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of, a casing, a lipstick holder having one end pivotally connected to one end of said casing and another end disconnectably associated therewith, the holder comprising lipstick retaining means comprising a complementary iixed and movable member, and means normally urging said movable member towards said lipstick interposed between said members.

2. In a device of the character described, a casing, a lipstick holder disconnectably associated with said casing and spaced complementary lipstick retaining means comprising a movable and stationary member, and means normally urging said movable member against said lipstick.

3. A lipstick holder, comprising, in combination, a frame, a slidable body disposed within said frame, complementary retaining means comprising a fixed and displaceable member and means within the frame for normally holding said displaceable member against said lipstick interposed between said members.

4. A lipstick holder, comprising in combination, a frame, a body slidably guided within said frame, lipstick retaining means comprising a stationary member carried by said frame and a F member carried by said body, and spring means normally urging the member carried by said body against said lipstick interposed between said members.

5. A lipstick holder, comprising, in combination, a frame, a body slidably guided within said frame, lipstick retaining means comprising complementary retaining members for disconnectably holding various sizes of lipsticks, one of said members being carried by said body, and spring means normally urging the last mentioned member against a lipstick interposed between said members.

6. A lipstick holder, comprising, in combination,4 a frame, a body slidably guided within said frame, prong carrying lipstick retaining means comprising a stationary member carried by said frame and a member movable relative to said frame carried by said body, a spring acting against one part of said body, said movable member being manually retractable relative to said stationary member and against the energy of said spring for increasing the gap between said members for the insertion of a lipstick therebetween, said movable member upon release of the energy of said spring being movable towards and against said lipstick interposed between said members.

7. A lipstick holder comprising, in combination, a frame, a body slidab'ly guided within said frame, lipstick retaining means comprising a stationary prong carrying member carried by said frame and a prong carrying member movable relative to said frame and carried by said body and spring means abutting said body for normally urging said movable member in a direction towards said stationary member to decrease the gap therebetween and embrace in part a lipstick, said movable member being retractab-le against the energy of said spring means to increase the gap between said members to permit the removal of said lipstick.

8. In a compact receiving device, the combination of, a casing, a lipstick holder associated with said casing and having complementary lipstick retaining means comprising a stationary and movable member, spring means for urging said movable member in a direction towards said stationary member, said movable member being retractable for increasing the separation of said members for the insertion of a lipstick therebetween.

9. In a compact receiving device, the combination of, a casing having a removable closure, a holder carried by said closure, said holder comprising spaced complementary retaining members, one of said retaining members being stationary relative to said holder and the other member being movably guided in said holder, said members being adapted to partially embrace a lipstick interposed therebetween, and spring means for holding said movable member against said lipstick.

10. In a compact receiving device, the combination of, a casing having alined bayonet slots, a closure having pin means pivotally and removably disposed in said slots, said closure comprising complementary lipstick holding means so positioned on said closure that said lipstick extends into said casing when said closure is in closed position.

11. In a compact receiving device, the combination of, a casing having alined bayonet slots, a closure having pin means p-ivotally and removably disposed in said slots, said closure comprising prong carrying retaining members, one of which is movable relative to said holder whereby the gap between said members may be varied and spring means actuating said movable member for holding a lipstick interposed between said members.
