width scale on the base comprises diagonal parallel lines marked in width sizes, operating in conjunction with a width scale marked on the rear of the slide. Such a device has worked satisfactorily for both rights and lefts in adults.and childrens sizes, but owing to the detachability of the slide and the arrangement of scales, some inconveniences have arisen in both manipulation and obtaining quick and accurate readings which this invention overcomes.
According to this invention, I mount the slide permanently on the base so that it can move crosswise in obtaining overall lengths and Widths, and move longitudinally on either side to obtain arch lengths, being movable from one side to the other without requiring detachment. In the preferred form herein shown, the slide is mounted to run in a trackway on the underside of the base without being interfered with by the floor on which the stick rests when in use, and can readily be shifted from side position measuring the arch lengthto crosswise position for obtaining overall length and width.
In conjunction with such improved slide, a system of length and Width scales is provided in association with an indicator and slots in the slide whereby the operator more quickly obtains direct readings on parallel scales. The novel scale arrangement I have devised retains the longitudinal central scale and edge scales of said patent, but interposes on one side, an adults width scale, and on the other side, a childs width scale, and on the slide provides corresponding slots graduated in length sizes so that adults Width is obtained by direct and positive reading through one slot in the slide, and childrens widths likewise through another. This system is found to be quicker and more accurate than the width reading system including diagonal width lines disclosed in said patent. Also, it is possible in this device to carry the heel to ball scale on either side of the base from adults right down to childrens sizes, which is a decided advantage and (Cl. Sli-3) not, so far as I know, embodied in any previous device.

I represents the base which may conveniently be of die cast aluminum having a heel piece 2 at one end, curved to receive the heel in length measuring, and the small toe in Width measuring. On the underside of the base is a trackway 3 extending along each side and around the end, and within the trackway are ribs or extensions 4 which form a base. Mounted to slide in the trackway from one side around to the other and crosswise is a slide 6 having inturned end 'I to underlie the trackway and carrying on extensions 8, screws or pins 9 to hold the slide in the track. Preferably as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the trackway is curved around the outer end on a radius such, in connection with the location of pins 9, as to enable the slide to move'from one edge to the other as in measuring one foot and then the other, or to slide crosswise in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The slide is provided with a curved lug I to contact with the end of the great toe in obtaining overall length, and with the great toe ball joint when sliding on the side of the base to obtain arch length, which is the distance from the heel to the said joint. By the structure indicated and shown, it is seen that the slide is held out of Contact With the floor and can be easily slid around and up and down as desired.
The slide in the rear of lug I!) is provided with a central indicating slot II and pointer I2. On
one side is a width reading slot I3 as for adults,
and on the other side, a wi-dth reading slot III as for children. Each of these slots is graduated along one edge, as at I6, I1 respectively with corresponding length graduations.
The base is provided With a central length scale I8 which starts' at childrens sizes and then continues into adult sizes as shown and all cooperate with pointer I2. On the right, as seen in Fig. 1 is an outside scale I9 for giving arch measurements in terms of size for the right foot, and on the other side, is a similar scale 20 for the left foot, each of these scales likewise running from childrens sizes into adult sizes.
Between the central scale and the edge scale, as on the right side, is a width scale 22 for adults, and on the left side is a similar scale 23 for childrens widths, the scale 22 cooperating with reading slot I3 and Scale I6 on the side, and the scale 23 cooperating with reading slot I4 and scale I1 on the slide.
Measurements, preferably for both feet, because feet are often of different size, are made as follows:

By attaching the slide to the base so that it can be moved around Without difficulty While in use, I add to the convenience of the above features, While the arrangement of pointer, slots vand scales makes possible a direct and positive reading of the width required for the previously determined length and, so far as I know, for the iirst time makes it possible to run length'scales for heel to ballmeasure from adults right down to childrens sizes.
The 4Linvention claimed is:
1. Afoot measuringstick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a track- Way along the sides and around the opposite end,
scales adjacent the edges and centrally of the stick, a slide mounted in said trackvvay and movable longitudinally and crosswise of the stick,
and indicating means carried by the slide and` cooperating with said scales.
2. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a vheel piece at one end, a track- Wayon the underside along the sides and around the opposite end, scales adjacent the edges and centrally of the stick, a slide' mounted in said trackway and movable longitudinally and cross- Wise of the stick, and indicating means carried by the slide and cooperating with said scales.
3. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a track- Way on the underside elevated above the bottom along the sides and around the opposite end, scales adjacent the edges and centrally of the stick, a slide mounted in said trackway and movable, longitudinally and-crosswise of the stick,
and indicating means carried by the slide and cooperating with said scales.
4. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a track- Way along the sides and around the opposite end, scales adjacent the edges and centr-ally of the stick, a slotted slide mounted in said trackway and movable longitudinally and crosswise of the stick, and indicating means carried by the slide at one side of said slot and cooper-ating With said scales.
5. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a length scale centrally of the stick, a Width scale intermediate the centra-1 scale and one edge, and a slide movable on the stick, said slide having a central slot and pointer for obtaining lengths from said length scale, and a slot With graduations of Widthsize variation designated by corresponding length size indicia for obtaining Widths from said Width scale.
6. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a length scale centrally of the stick, an adu'lts Width scale on oneside of said central scale, a childs width scale on the other side of said central scale, and a slide' movable on the sticksaid slide having a central slot and pointer for obtaining lengths from said length scale, `andwidth indicating slots with' graduations of Width size variation designated by corresponding length size indicia on opposite sides thereof cooperating with said Width scales.

A'foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a foot length scale centrally of the stick, an adults Width scale on one side of said central scale, a childs Width scale on the other side of said central scale, arch length'scales adjacent the longitudinal edges of thestick and a slide movable longitudinally and crosswise of the stick, said slide having a central 'slot and pointer cooperating with said foot and arch length scales for obtaining foot and arch lengths, and Width indicating slots on opposite 'sides thereof cooperating with said Width scales, said Width slots having graduations in foot length units to enable the required Width to be determined relatively to the ascertained length.
8. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, foot and arch length'scales longitudinally of the stick running continuously through childrens lengths and through adults lengths, a longitudinal childs Width scale adjacent the heel piece, a separate longitudinal adults Width scale also adjacent the heel piece, and a slide movable longitudinally and crosswise of the stick having a slot and pointer cooperating with said foot and arch length scales, and slotted and graduated in foot length units to cooperate with said adults and childs Width scales.
9. A foot measuring stick comprising a stick member having a heel piece at one end, a length scale longitudinally of the stick running continuously from childrens lengths through adults lengths, a longitudinal childs Width scale adjacent the heel piece, a separate longitudinal adults Width scale also adjacent the heel piece, and a slide movable longitudinally and crosswise of the stick having length indicating means cooperating with said length scale when moving longitudinally on the stick `and Width indicating means cooperating vvith said Width indicating scales when moving in crosswise relation on said stick.
