FOOT MEASURING DEVICE Fild Aug. 18. 1951 71] \W\K: ;Z F i///// 10 9 7/ 1 INVENTOR WITNESSES Jose h, Pietgwoh/ 5 WWI 6 \7 ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 23, 1932 STATES JOSEPH PIETZUCH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSdURI FOOT MEASURING DEVICE Application filed August 18, 1931. Serial No. 557,913.
This invention relates to a foot measuring device which is designed and adapted to guide a shoe fitter in selecting a proper shoe for each particular foot measured.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a foot measuring device embodying novel features of construction which im prove the readability thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the indicated character which may be readily used by a beginner or an expert in fitting shoes to the human foot, and
assuring more accurate fitting and consequently more comfortable shoes for the wearer.
' Another object of the invention is to provide anovel, simple, accurate and ineXpensive foot measuring device.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a measuring de vice embodying the features of the invention; Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section of the device;
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the several views of the drawing, it will be apparent that the device includes an oblong base 10 of uniform thickness throughout and which may be made of wood for the sake of lightness. The base 10 has a groove 11 centrally thereof and extending longitudinally in one face within the marginal edges of the base. An oblong or elongated plate 12, preferably of metal, is fixedly secured to the base 10 in any practical manner, as by the use of fastening elements 13 driven in the base. The plate 12 has a slot 14: corresponding to the groove 11 and in registration therewith. The plate 12 has a foot measuring scale which consists of right and left lateral positioning lines or graduations, there being relatively long lines or graduations 15 indexed by numbers designated 16, representing full sizes, and relatively short lines or graduations 17, representing half sizes, of all shoes. The long and short lines or graduations occur on both sides of the slot 14. One end of the plate 12 has formed integral therewith an arcuate shaped abutment or heel seat 18, the same being disposed substantially perpendicularly to .the plane of the plate'12. The abutment or seat 18 serves to hold the foot in a proper position for accurately measuring the size thereof. A slide 19 is permanently fitted to the plate 12. The said slide is made preferably of metal and consists of two parts fastened together in order to provide grooves 20 which receive the opposite side edges of the plate 12 bounding the slot 14. The groove 11 in the base 10 v accommodates the under part of the slide. The slide 19 is freely movable in relation to the measuring scale although it is permanently fitted to the plate 12. The slide 19 has an abutment 21 on one end thereof which 00- operates with the abutment 18 in the foot 0 measuring operation. The forward end edge 22 of the slide which is brought into position in relation to the lines 15 and 17 indicates the particular size of the foot and the shoe wanted in each particular case.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the provision of the particular slide 19 in conjunction with the'particular measuring-scale affords improved readability, the numbers 16 v at the opposite sides being always in full view of the shoe fitter; and that the other objects of the invention may be achieved by reason of theconstruction illustrated and described.
It is to be understood that changes in form, 1 material and proportion'of minor details may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims. If desired, the device may be provided with a hole :23 in one end for hanging up the device when not in use.
Claim:
A measuring device including a plate having a measuring scale facing upwardly, said plate having a longitudinal slot closed at the ends, a slide fitted to said plate by reason of said slot and movable in relation to said scale, said slide consisting of two parts fastened together and of such construction a to provide grooves which receive the opposite side edges respectively of the plate bounding the slot, one end of said slide providing a straight edge movable in relation to the graduations of the scale by moving the slide to indicate various foot sizes, the remaining end of said slide having a toe abutment, and a heel abutment on one end of said plate which cooperates with said toe abutment.
